Reigning world champion and Rio Games silver medal- list, Sindhu has been drawn with Hong Kong's Cheung Ngan Yi (ranked 34th) and Israel's Ksenia Polikarpova (ranked 58th) in Group J of the women's singles event. "It's a good draw in the group stage. Hong Kong girl plays well and it's going to be a good match," Sindhu, who is world number seven, said in a release issued by Bad- minton Association of India (BAI). "Everybody is going to be in top form, I hope I do well. Every match is important, so I will take match by match. This is the Olympics and it is not going to be easy, each point is very important," said the sixth seed. Sindhu has an all-win record against her group stage opponents Ngan Yi and Polikarpova in the five and two encounters played so far against them respec- tively. In men's singles, World No. 15 B Sai Praneeth has been placed in Group D alongside World No. 29 Mark Caljouw of Nether- lands and World No. 47 Is- raeli shuttler Misha Zilber- man. "It's a mixed draw, not so tough and not so good. I have to be 100 percent to win all matches and it will be a good match for me," World Championships bronze medallist Praneeth said. World no 10 men's dou- bles pair of Chirag Shetty and Satwiksairaj Rankireddy, however, are expected to face a stiff chal- lenge in the league stage. The duo has been placed in the Group A alongside top-seed and World No. 1 Indonesian pair of Kevin Sanjaya Sukamuljo and Marcus Fernaldi Gideon, who also finished at the top in the Race to Tokyo stand- ing, and World No. 3 Lee Yang and Wang Chi-Lin from Chinese Taipei. England's Ben Lane and Sean Vendy are the fourth pair placed in Group A. "It's a very even group which means even if you lose a match, you are still in the game because nobody knows what will happen," India's Danish doubles coach Mathias Boe said. "We'll focus on preparing as much as possible in the last few weeks. We will at- tack on court and hopefully, we get good results. I am positive, it's a good chal- lenge for us." In the singles category, 42 players are divided into 14 groups with each group con- sisting of three players. Top player from each group will qualify for the knockout stage. While in the doubles cate- gory, 16 pairs are divided into four groups with top two pairs from each group advancing to the last-eight stage. Badminton matches will kick-start from July 24. It's not going to be easy at Olympics: Sindhu NEW DELHI, JULY 09: Sri Lankan team's data analyst G T Niroshan has tested positive for COVID- 19 ahead of the limited overs series against India, the country's cricket board said on Friday, a day after its batting coach Grant Flower contracted the virus. "The Data Analyst of the Sri Lanka National Team, G. T. Niroshan, has tested positive for Covid 19," Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) said in a statement. "He was found to be posi- tive, following a PCR Test carried out among the Na- tional Players, Coaches, and Support Staff yesterday, fol- lowing the identification of Grant Flower as Covid Posi- tive. "Niroshan is now under- going due medical proto- cols." On Thursday, Sri Lanka's batting coach Flower tested positive for COVID-19, 48 hours after the squad's ar- rival from England and less than a week before the home series against India. All the other players who are quarantining have also been tested. Before testing negative, Sri Lanka's squad had faced an anxious wait for the results of their PCR tests on returning home, following a COVID-19 out- break in the England squad after the final match of their tour in Bristol on Sun- day. Sri Lanka are set to take on India in a six-match white-ball series starting July 13. Flower had been isolated from the rest of the squad which is undergoing hard quarantine on arrival. Flower is a former Zim- babwe batsman and was with the team in England where it lost both the T20 International and ODI se- ries. Already, three Sri Lankan players are facing an inquiry for breaching the COVID-19 protocols in UK during the tour. England's entire ODI squad and support staff were forced into self-isola- tion after a number of COVID positive cases, forc- ing the England & Wales Cricket Board (ECB) to name an entirely new 18- man squad ahead of the first ODI against Pakistan on Thursday. Now, Sri Lanka's data analyst COVID positive NEW DELHI, JULY 09:Former India batsman VVS Laxman feels Kuldeep Yadav and Yuzvendra Cha- hal must feature in the up- coming ODI series against Sri Lanka as bowling in the three matches will help the spin duo regain confidence. A vital cog of the Indian bowling attack in limited- overs cricket in the lead-up to the 50-over World Cup in 2019, the two wrist spin- ners have seen their stocks decline recently. "I would like to see them play in three ODIs, because there are six spinners as you rightly mentioned. I think in ODIs, each bowler will get to play 10 overs," Lax- man said during Star Sports' show 'Game Plan'. "So, the more overs they bowl, the more success they have, they will get back the confidence -- especially Kuldeep Yadav. "Chahal is a successful and experienced bowler, he is high on confidence and a very important member, keeping in mind the T20 World Cup. I think Kuldeep requires to get his confi- dence back," he added. Praising Suryakumar Ya- dav, Laxman, who featured in 134 Tests, 86 ODIs for India, said the 30-year-old right-hander has the poten- tial to be a part of the World T20 squad. "I was excited seeing the way Suryakumar Yadav batted at No.3. His first scoring shot in interna- tional cricket, that too against a quality fast bowler like Jofra Archer, shows the kind of confidence, the tal- ent and the skill he pos- sesses - this is a great op- portunity! "I want him to play all six matches because he is someone who can definitely walk into the T20 World Cup squad, as far as I am concerned. I want him to grow and gain the confi- dence of scoring runs, even at the international level,” he added. In the recently concluded second intra-squad match in Sri Lanka, Kuldeep and Chahal shared as many as five wickets between them. In a video shared by Sri Lanka Cricket's YouTube channel, Chahal can be seen dismissing Nitish Rana and Krishnappa Gowtham. Kuldeep, who has been struggling to ce- ment his place in the na- tional set-up, picked up three wickets. Former all-rounder Irfan Pathan rallied behind Kuldeep Yadav as he said, "The only way you can get confidence is by playing matches. And if he keeps bowling more and more overs, this is where his lost confidence will come back. He has been a very success- ful bowler in a short span of time for Indian cricket. "He has been one of the quickest to take 100 wickets and he is a wicket-taker. As far as the rest of the team is concerned, you need to give them confidence. So, I am looking forward to seeing not only Kuldeep and Cha- hal bowling together, but I am hoping that Hardik Pandya starts bowling. What I am hearing is that if he starts bowling, then it makes it easier to play both of them." India are set to take on hosts Sri Lanka in a limited over series, comprising ODIs and as many T20Is, starting on July 13. How Kul-Cha can regain confidence NEW DELHI, JULY 09:Prime Minister Naren- dra Modi took stock of In- dia's Olympic preparations on Friday and also an- nounced an interaction with the country's Tokyo-bound sportspersons on July 13, three days before the first batch departs for the Japan- ese capital. The interaction with the athletes will be held virtually owing to the COVID-19 situation. "Reviewed preparations for facilitation of India's con- tingent at @Tokyo2020. Discussed the logistical de- tails, their vaccination status, the multi-disciplinary sup- port being given," Modi tweeted. "On behalf of 130 crore In- dians, I would be interacting with the Olympics bound athletes on 13th July to wish them luck. Let us all #Cheer4India," he said. The earlier announcement of his July 13 engagement with athletes was made on government's citizen en- gagement platform, My- GovIndia's twitter page. The first batch of India's Olympic-bound athletes will depart for Tokyo in a charter Air India flight on July 17.More than 120 athletes are bound for the Games, even though the Indian Olympic Association is yet to officially divulge the strength of the contingent. In view of the raging COVID-19 cases, the Tokyo Olympics will be held under a state of emergency in Japan without spectators from July 23 to August 8. PM Modi to interact with Tokyo-bound athletes NEW DELHI, JULY 09: Italy midfielder Marco Verratti has predicted that Sunday's Euro 2020 final against England at Wemb- ley will be "an epic"."I think England did a great job. They got to the final for the first time and this says a lot. They conceded only one goal, so it is a very solid team, great players, very balanced, and I think they did deserve to get to the final. Now it's all down to the final, which I think will be an epic final, and history-making either way," Sky Sports quoted Verratti during a press conference on Thursday. COVID scare: England at risk from Euro 2020 eu- phoria Asked about the penalty incident against Denmark, which helped England in cruising into their first ma- jor final since 1966, Verratti said: "Perhaps it was a bit of a generous penalty, but it is part of the picture in foot- ball. I think it was a bit of a generous penalty." In the second semi-final of Euro 2020, Harry Kane put away the rebound after Kasper Schmeichel saved his extra-time penalty to help England defeat Den- mark 2-1. "England is a very physi- cal team, and they have players who are very skilled as well. We will face a very, very tough team, they will be playing at home, they know the stadium well. But it is a dream for us to win this European Champi- onship," he added.Italy and England have faced each other 27 times, the Azzurri winning 11 to Three Lions' eight, with eight draws. England suffered tourna- ment-ending losses in both the teams' previous Euro encounters -- Marco Tardelli's late goal earned the Azzurri hosts a 1-0 win in the 1980 group stage while Italy prevailed on penalties (remember An- drea Pirlo's Panenka!) in the 2012 quarter-finals. Notably, Italy have never lost to England at a major final, with 2-1 FIFA World Cup victories in 1990 (third-place play-off) and 2014 (group stage) on top of those Euro tri- umphs. Italy vs England will be epic final: Verratti NEW DELHI, JULY 09: For- mer India cricketer Sanjay Man- jrekar says since skipper Virat Kohli is likely to open with Rohit Sharma in the T20 World Cup, Suryakumar Yadav is an ideal can- didate for the number three slot. Kohli and Rohit Sharma had opened for the first time in the fifth match of the home T20 series against England in March this year, raising a 94-run partnership. They had also opened together way back in 2014 against New Zealand. Manjrekar also felt that Suryakumar Yadav could be the front-runner for the number three spot, which otherwise belongs skipper Kohli. "Yes, I think he (Surya) is one of the front-runners, especially with the news coming out that Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli are going to be India's openers. There could be a number three slot open for me," Manjrekar said during a vir- tual interaction. "I don't know what plan they have with (KL) Rahul, there cer- tainly is a place for someone like Suryakumar Yadav. I have rarely seen somebody bat like that in the IPL for the whole season and even more, the kind of batsmanship we have seen. "And makes him an ideal num- ber three, he can hit good balls for fours, certainly one of the op- tions," he added. The T20 World Cup has been moved to UAE and Oman from India. The event scheduled to be- gin from October 17. Talking about the upcoming se- ries against Sri Lanka, starting July 13, Manjrekar said he would prefer a more consistent Ishan Kishan instead of Sanju Samson. Manjrekar says the skills behind the wickets hold more significance in Test cricket, so in white-ball for- mats having a quality batsman is a much better option. "Ishan Kishan is my choice, purely because I am going for the more consistent batter. In ODI cricket keeping is not as crucial as it is in Test matches, in T20s it is not that vital, so you are really making a choice of a better bat- ter," Manjrekar said. "Samson is incredible when he gets going, there is nobody better than him but consistency is a very important criteria for me and that is where I would like to back somebody like Ishan Kishan be- fore I look at Sanju Samson," he added. Kuldeep has a chance and he will have to compete for a place in that Indian T20 World Cup side. He has to prove that he can be a better option According to the former bats- man, the Sri Lanka tour will also be important for spinner Kuldeep Yadav. "I am actually very happy with the way the selection has been made. It is nice to see that Kuldeep Yadav has been brought back. In the last year or in a couple of years, he lost his place. "In the Indian white ball team, there was a time he was a game- changer along with (Yuzvendra) Chahal. It is nice that the selectors have given him the opportunity to stake his claim, because he hardly plays for IPL. "He has a chance and he will have to compete for a place in that Indian T20 World Cup side. He has to prove that he can be a better option,” added Manjrekar. Manjrekar also felt that all- rounder Hardik Pandya can play solely as a batsman in the team, having done so in the last season against Australia. "Hardik proved himself in Aus- tralia that he is perfectly capable of playing in the team as a pure batter, there is no doubt now that he can do that," he said. "I am also reading reports that he has started bowling as well. His bowling, all the more-better for India. He has shown that he has the ability to walk into the team as a pure batter in white-ball cricket," added Manjrekar. Manjrekar also said that the T20 team that India would put up in the upcoming World Cup would be one of the strongest. "The T20 World Cup squad is almost finalised. India's T20 cricket is in a very healthy space, so it is not like the 2019 World Cup, where till the end we didn't find our number four. "This T20 team, that India will put up, will be one of the strongest India has ever put up in a T20 for- mat, so I think most of the players are already pencilled in. Former India batsman Ajay Jadeja, who was also part of the interaction backed young Kar- nataka batsman Devdutt Padikkal to open the innings against Sri Lanka. "I love Devdutt Padikkal, he is the future, but you have got Prithvi Shaw as well. It all de- pends on the guys who are run- ning the side at that particular moment.
