It’s grammar time, everybody.

Good, detailed writing includes complex

sentences. We need to increase our sentence

variety in our writing to make it more fresh and

energetic.

One way we can do this is by using

coordinating conjunctions!

QUICK REVIEW•SUBJECT:

The noun. Person, place, thing, or idea doing the action.

•VERB: The action, or what the noun does.

•INDEPENDENT CLAUSE: A complete subject + verb unit. Independent clauses can stand alone as complete sentences.

Independent clause example:

Jasmine turned in her homework on time.

Not an example:Jasmine’s

homework in the bin.

INDEPENDENT CLAUSES to show a relationship between the two

•FORMULA: Independent clause , coordinating conjunction independent clause.

Coordinating conjunction example:

Hip Hop has had its fair share of new acts, and Future

appears to be the latest artist

to emerge into the public.

FOR

•Used to indicate REASON

•Example: Ms. Vondracek could not grade last week’s exit tickets, for she was too busy reading your entertaining bell ringers.

AND

•Used for ADDITION

•Example: Hip Hop has had its fair share of new acts, and Future appears to be the latest artist to emerge into the public.

NOR

•Means “AND NOT”

•Example:The senior class did not have any students in the red for attendance, nor did they have anyone miss Prom because of suspensions.

BUT

•Used to show CONTRAST

•Example: Michael did not complete his essay assignment in class, but he turned in the assignment at the beginning of class the very next day.

OR

•Used to show OPTIONS

•Example: Students at Fenger High School know they can eat lunch in the cafeteria, or they can do work in the library or other classrooms to make up missed attendances.

YET

•Used to show OUTCOME

•Example: Kevin wanted to sleep in and miss his second period class, yet he went to class and brilliantly completed his work instead.

SO

•Used to show RESULTS

•Example: Many students in English IV know that coming to room 319 to work during lunch will probably raise their grade, so they stop by and finish their missing work.

WHITE BOARD CHALLENGE•Each group/team gets a whiteboard and

marker.

•A picture or scenario is shown on the slideshow.

•You have 15 seconds to make up a sentence using one of the provided coordinating conjunctions describing the picture or scenario. You may make this up!

•After 15 seconds, hold up your whiteboard. If you’ve used a coordinating conjunction correctly, your team gets a point!

EXAMPLE:•A student might write:Kanye West manages to interrupt Taylor Swift, but he ends up embarrassing himself instead.

Exit slip:•Rewrite your bell ringer using at least four sentences with coordinating conjunctions. Underline these coordinating conjunctions.
