On a sunny and hot late August afternoon in 2012, AUB welcomed its first cohort of 50 United States Agency for International Development USP students, embarking on an exciting and unique learning adventure. Since that day, 214 scholars have graduated from the program, many of whom have seamlessly joined the job market whereas others are pursuing their graduate studies at top universities across the world. Now, seven years after, this transformative journey continues, not only for the scholars, their families and their communities, but also for us at AUB, whose campus has been transformed by such programs. Through the USP program, USAID has given access to undergraduate American liberal art education for more than 350 bright and talented young Lebanese men and women students who joined AUB from the 26 districts of Lebanon. During their stay at AUB, the students excelled academically while being heavily engaged in impactful community service projects and civic engagement activities. It is to the first four cohorts of the USAID USP scholars that we dedicate this first edition of the USAID USP Recognition Book. It is a modest gesture to recognize their achievements within the walls of AUB and beyond. We have been lucky to have known, mentored and worked with such distinguished individuals. They will remain in our hearts as we wish them all the best in their future endeavors.

As part of the community service work required by USP, I had the chance to volunteer with the Children’s Cancer Center of Lebanon. Till now, it’s my most remarkable experience throughout my stay at AUB. I wanted my social work to be about impact, helping others, and creating hope in such a world of problems and illnesses, and my volunteering at the CCCL was exactly this, not only on the children, but also on me as it has given me positivity, strength and belief like no other place.

I am definitely a more confident, more open person ready to take on whatever challenge comes my way. As simple as it may sound, USP is like a backbone for me, it gave me people to rely on, people to share my university experience with and it gave me my best friend Yasmine :) Today, I work at a big corporate and I’ve made it my objective to bring some of that community service to my workplace. We’ve volunteered as teachers with INJAZ, raised money and cooked 2,500 meals during Ramadan that went to the underprivileged here in Dubai, we’ve held a clothes donation campaign that went to benefit the Syrian refugees in Lebanon, and we’re on the way to going completely green and environmentally friendly in our office. All of this I owe to my experience in USP.

I have discovered myself through being a USP student. A new strong woman was born after the struggles I’ve faced throughout the four years at AUB. I learnt responsibility, respect, openness to different cultures and traditions, critical discussions, reasonable thinking and willingness to always learn more. Certainly, I urge students in my community to work hard and to apply for the USP scholarship so that they have the chance to try this fruitful experience.

My USAID scholarship experience settled the first step on the ladder of success in my journey. Volunteering activities, social work, skill empowering workshops and personal development activities shaped the person who I am today and pushed me further to reach my goals fearlessly. I can easily say that after being admitted to AUB as a USP scholar, my confidence boosted. Knowing that I am one of the few to have been given this opportunity motivated me to perform my best at all times. The community work and team experience I gained helped me seek excellence and put aside personal gain for the well-being of a group. Today, as a graduate, I am a person who is able to control a situation, rather than have a situation control me. I am mature, candid, and self-determined, and every day I work hard to improve myself and my skills, which is part of my goal, to grow in my current professional experience and work field as a whole.
