1. The new Shields buttress, constructed of Medical GradeTPE (Thermoplastic Elastomer) is an adherent, soft, gel likematerial. It provides an elastic, flexible, shock absorbingquality that assists in replicating taping the knee. It has thepractical advantage of patient application and adjustment.

2. It helps assist in the active relocation of the patella andplaces the bone in its pain free position.

3. The new buttress is more dynamic, more comfortableand offers the practitioner and patient greater

proprioception. The unique molded design offersanatomical contours and easier placement.

4. The Shields Brace is designed to position the patella away from the symptomatic contactpoint no matter the malalignment, which improves tracking in the patellofemoral groove.

5. You place the patella where you want it to be. The buttress, inconjunction with the patellar control straps, holds the patella in

place and allows it to move with you.

The soft gel rubber of thebuttress can be adjustedto cover the elevatedportion of the patella to“unload” the affected area.

Lateral Patellar Tilt without Shields™ Brace:Kinematic MRI of thepatellofemoral joint, active-movement against resistancetechnique

Patella in Normal AlignmentPatella with Lateral Tilt

Effect of a Patella-Stabilizing Brace on Lateral Subluxation of the PatellaBy Frank G. Shellock, Ph.D., FACSM; Adjunct Clinical Professor of Radiology, University ofSouthern California, School of Medicine

ABSTRACT: This study investigated the effect of a special patella braceon patients with lateral subluxation of the patella using kinematicmagnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Fifteen patients were assessedwith and without application of the brace (Shields PatellaStabilizing Brace, Hely & Weber, Santa Paula, Calif.) usingactive-movement, against-resistance kinematic MRI of thepatellofemoral joint. Kinematic MRI examinationswere evaluated using previously describedqualitative criteria to determinepatellofemoral relationships.
