Th•! joutney was to take us through the hell of Basic Training 'Where tortured musclet screamed out their prof<tst. through the smart military and academic training of colleges, lo Classification, with all its disappointrMnls, and finally through p,... flight before any actual flying of military type planes. The 11ight months of long ~paration for the fli9ht training was lwlrd and will long be remembered. We marched and marched until the spirit of doing things in unison was captured. At limes we wonder.d jlSI llrhat the name "Air Corps" meant, for certainly we weren't flying. But sOtn*where along the line a metamorphosis took place: _ l'.,. slowly becoming men. June 27, 1944 20:00 C. W. T.

1 finally made it Mom. Yes, I em no ... an officer in the Army of the Uniti1d States. Today as we :...alked up and got those win9s pinned on our chests I wondered ho" many mtn were thinking of the p~st fifteen m~nths and ~· work W'll have jusi completed. As tho voict of the graduation speaker vibrated ag111nst my ears the scene faded and I sa"" the pad months in review. I saw hc ndreds of boys, in civilian garb, repor+ing to Keesler. Miami, and Shepherd Field. They "'ere excited, eager, and just a little scarnd of the adventure to come. They were all good boys; in facr, the best in the nation. Basic Training was rough, as we drilled millions of square steps and marched hoer after hour. After five such weeks of hard worlo: and regular meals, men be9an to emerg~ ;eady lo c:ope with any cadet program. I'll never forget the dia. bolical 9feam in the "IT'ed1cs' " eyes as they injected us for everything but fatigue. The next five months was <> form of refined Basic Training taken at colleges all over the country. At G.ilesburg, Kansas City, Cleveland, Texas A and M., in fact, wherever a 9ood cofiege was to be found, boys in khaki studied Geography, Phrics, Math, and Navigation in preparation for Pre.Flight. The ten hours of dual in "gr1mhoppers" in C. T. 0. 9ave us a slight taste of military flying. (It reminded me of your chocolate cake on Sunday evening, remember 7)

Classification •nd Preflight came nl!xt, three months of ~ard work. We said good· bye to the Bombardiers and Navioators at classification and to a lot of boyl not as lucky as yours truly. •

Not ~ne of us wiR lor~et the Primary schools nor the PT -19 w.e flew there. It was • sweet airplane and the first one I soloed. Funny, about that. I scared my instructor so muc~ that. after eigh.' hours he made me take it up alone 3nd practice before he 'Would ride with me again. Nor did I break my "blinkeiy blank" neck as he suggested.

. I got ~S hou.rs in the air before shipping to Basic, regular qualified H.P.'s, if you piease. Balle; lraon.ers were equipped with " two way" radios along with a thous~nd o!her qad~els desooned for ..,fetv. One <:.'ldet qot so excited when his radio receiver hent haywire that he radioed "OF.89-l'm coming in for a forced landir>g. If you can

ear me, rock the lower." He m.-d .. it, though, c:l•ar through to his gold bars. Just an average cadet!

The AT-6 c~me next and fen weeks of flying and praying. It was here that they :rs+ ~refated us lo~e prospedive officers and maybr you thil'k we didn't go for that. It

as Y ar, the nicest phase of our whole cadet life.

~·'." rehally flying with a lot of good boys, Mom,-the kind you would like lo h~ve methnn9 °

1mde on weekends. I'll be fairly s<>fe flying on their wing. I'm sorry all

mo ers cou n't be he 1 d t . . re 0 ay 0 pon on the wings. but first we nave a war to wtn.

boy! K,.i.e: ~~edwlelcomeh mat out, for everybody will soon be home on leave. Boy, oh e u e we ave planned for lh.lt lwo weeks.

Love from your ~on.

LIEUTENANT D. M. C, Clau 44.F
