Wilderness is something that we often see depicted in one of two ways. It’s either a place of escape where someone is able to be one with nature and find themselves, think of a cabin in the woods where you are self-sufficient and living the “good life” on your own terms. Or it’s a place where there is danger and you are likely to get harmed without the benefits of civilization, consider all the movies where bears are chasing after the main character and the terror that comes when they are all alone and the weather turns against them. The truth, however, is somewhere in between. The wild places in this world can help us reconnect to God’s creation, including ourselves, but they are often dangerous, not because of the animals looking to do us harm, but because of what we take into those places, again, our selves. Being alone in nature can allow us insights into how we are connected with every other living thing, but also force us to turn inward to see who we really are and how we actively work at harming ourselves and others. It is a both-and situation, not either-or. This Lent, we are going to focus on this idea of wilderness and how God can use these wild places, physical and metaphorical, to help us grow and change more and more into the likeness of Christ. We will see how Jesus used his time in the wilderness to nurture his relationship with God. We will listen to Abram and Sarai going into the unknown to live faithfully. We will also see how we can respond with fear to the unknown and thereby miss what God is doing in that wilderness. As a way to help with our journey through the wilderness, we have a number of resources for devotion. During every worship service during Lent there will be a poem included in the bulletin with an image for you to contemplate during the week. We also have a packet of devotional cards, one for each day of Lent, with a word and a scripture passage on it for you to take with you. I invite you to take advantage of these as we contemplate what God is doing within us to grow the kingdom. Wilderness is something that we often see depicted in one of two ways. It’s either a place of

escape where someone is able to be one with nature and find themselves, think of a cabin in the

woods where you are self-sufficient and living the “good life” on your own terms. Or it’s a place

where there is danger and you are likely to get harmed without the benefits of civilization,

consider all the movies where bears are chasing after the main character and the terror that

comes when they are all alone and the weather turns against them.

The truth, however, is somewhere in between. The wild places in this world can help us

reconnect to God’s creation, including ourselves, but they are often dangerous, not because of

the animals looking to do us harm, but because of what we take into those places, again, our

selves. Being alone in nature can allow us insights into how we are connected with every other

living thing, but also force us to turn inward to see who we really are and how we actively work

at harming ourselves and others. It is a both-and situation, not either-or.

This Lent, we are going to focus on this idea of wilderness and how God can use these wild

places, physical and metaphorical, to help us grow and change more and more into the likeness

of Christ. We will see how Jesus used his time in the wilderness to nurture his relationship with

God. We will listen to Abram and Sarai going into the unknown to live faithfully. We will also

see how we can respond with fear to the unknown and thereby miss what God is doing in that

wilderness.

As a way to help with our journey through the wilderness, we have a number of resources

for devotion. During every worship service during Lent there will be a poem included in the

bulletin with an image for you to contemplate during the week. We also have a packet of

devotional cards, one for each day of Lent, with a word and a scripture passage on it for

you to take with you. I invite you to take advantage of these as we contemplate

what God is doing within us to grow the kingdom.

We are a connectional church…connected in faith to

God—Father, Son, Holy Spirit. Jesus taught us that

prayer connects us to the Divine…and to each other.

Each month we list our faith community. Every family

has a date when we ask you to hold them in prayer.
