MERIDIONALISATION
PROJECT GENESISThe project IDENTIFICATION AND DISTRIBUTION IN ITALIAN SEAS OF NON INDIGENOUS SPECIES was launched on 2002 by ICRAM (Central Institute of Marine Research) and funded by the Italian Ministry of the Environment. Such effort is especially focused on supporting the adoption of the new Protocol Concerning Specially Protected Areas and Biological Diversity in the Mediterranean Sea of the Article 13 ASPIM of Barcelona Convention, that requires, inter alia, the regulation of the introduction of non-indigenous or genetically modified species.
GOALS• To define the present state of knowledge of NIS
immigration in Italian seas
• The realisation of an on-line databank to allow anexchange of information among the experts in Italyas well as in the Mediterranean.
• The elaboration of recommandations on NIS voluntary and involuntary introductions.
• Definition of criteria for evaluating the damagescaused by the introdution of NIS
• 30 experts in taxonomy coming from ICRAM, Italian Universities, CNR, ARPA, Stazione Zoologica di Napoli, LBM.
• 4 experts in aquariology and aquaculture
• 2 genetists
• 12 young researches
• 2 GIS experts
• a steering commette

Tissue bank of NIS species, to support genetic research as well as the study on cryptic species, hybridisation risk and founder effect has been created in two separated laboratories :

5. Technical reports on exotic species imported in Italy as potential sources of voluntary introduction of alien species
• checklist of allochtonous species, hybrids and GMOsused in aquariology and aquaculture
•atlas of 150 marine fish species introduced in aquaculture and aquariology
•List of species introduced for other uses i.e. fishingbaits
• critical review of the international literature, particularly on HAB microalgae, resting spores and cysts;
• identification of the Italian harbours at major risk of invasion, (analysis of commercial ships’ routes and traffic and of the volume of ballast waters exchanged);
• ballast water samples collected and analysed for the ports of Trieste and Naples; IMO forms compiled on a voluntary basis
•establishment of sampling protocols for tank waters and sediments.
