IT.A. CÀ MIGRANTS AND TRAVELLERS FESTIVAL OF RESPONSIBLE TOURISM

MAY 19-28 2017 BOLOGNA 9th edition

“When you set sail for Ithaca, wish for the road to be long, full of adventures, full of knowledge. ” Constantine Cavafy IN LINE WITH THE UN DECLARING 2017 AS THE INTERNATIONAL YEAR OF SUSTAINABLE TOURISM FOR DEVELOPMENT, IT.A.CÀ, THE FIRST FESTIVAL OF RESPONSIBLE TOURISM, INVITES YOU TO DISCOVER PLACES AND CULTURE THROUGH WALKING AND BICYCLE ITINERARIES, EXHIBITIONS, WORKSHOPS, CONCERTS, DOCUMENTARIES, BOOKS, AND TASTING SESSIONS. A UNIQUE OPPORTUNITY TO LIVE EMOTIONS OF A JOURNEY IN A GENUINE WAY. SUSTAINABLE TOURISM FOR DEVELOPMENT: DESTINATION IT.A.CÀ The UN declared 2017 as the International Year of Sustainable Tourism for Development. In fact, sustainable tourism plays a key role in the processes and policies of territorial development by promoting integration and social inclusion, valuing local resources, enriching relations between tourists, local citizens, and different actors of a territory. Sustainable tourism development isn’t limited to improving the experience of tourists who visit destinations and bring cultural and economic wealth. It also implies improving the life quality of local citizens and their relations with their own territory. This is the ninth year in which this philosophy will be realized in IT.A.CÀ, the first and the only festival of responsible tourism in Europe. Achieving synergy between hundreds of local agents, IT.A.CÀ has grown to be a platform of social strategic innovations for cities like Bologna, which is becoming the local driving force for tourism and sees in it the opportunity to regenerate local socio-economic environment. However, May in Bologna is only the first stage of the rich events program organised through October in Padova, Rovigo, Ferrara, Ravenna, Parma, Rimini, Reggio Emilia, Trentino, and Monferrato. IT.A.CÀ is an opportunity to live the emotions of a journey in a genuine way and to encourage more sustainable tourism practices. Pierluigi Musarò Director of the IT.A.CÁ Festival

DESTINATION BOLOGNA This year, “Destinazione Turistica Bologna Metropolitana” was officially established, which means the beginning of a new season for tourism in Bologna. We set out to explore the urban landscape from the Apennines to the plains and to promote it as a unique heritage of nature, culture, and unique experiences. A gateway to the region, Bologna presents itself as an engine room of the development diffused over the territory where tourism is becoming an opportunity to create employment and new relations between humankind and nature. All this can be achieved by promoting itineraries and hospitality services compatible with the environment and cultural diversity. A land where sunlight touches medieval towers and runs along paths and busy streets, where identity represents the most valuable attraction for tourists, Bologna begins a choral story with citizens as its main characters. A city attractive to tourists can’t avoid attracting its inhabitants, too. IT.A.CÀ hence is the best travelling companion or even many companions in a collective subject. Thanks to its ability to create a network among hundreds of local agents whose activities (sometimes indirectly) have to do with tourism, the festival represents for Bologna a strategic reality connecting territorial development with sustainability and socio-cultural innovations. IT.A.CÀ is a destination to aspire, as the poet Cavafy sang, but also a festival born in Bologna that spreads creativity and cultural innovations at a national level. Matteo Lepore Economy and Tourism Councillor of Bologna and the President of Destinazione Turistica Bologna Metropolitana

CLERICI VAGANTES IN BOLOGNA On the occasion of the International Year of Sustainable Tourism for Development approved by the UN, the University of Bologna actively participates in the ninth edition of IT.A.CÀ in order to contribute to the program of events aiming at inspiring discussion about the sustainability culture. Conceived and created by a University professor and realized in collaboration with two Learning centres (Ces.Co.Com and CAST) and with the support of Unibo Sostenibile, the festival perfectly falls within the goals of the University, which looks towards evolving into a larger laboratory of ideas shared with other subjects on the territory. To take up the challenges of sustainable development, the University has integrated a new Strategic Plan 2016-2018 that reinterprets teaching, research and third mission objectives in respect of 17 objectives and 169 relative goals proposed by the UN in the 2030 Agenda. In line with the centuries-old history of the University, which looks both at the past and present, IT.A.CÀ incarnates a way to express our knowledge on the line between humanistic, scientific and technological cultures in a creative and lively way. The original University model practiced by professors who came to Bologna as clerici vagantes, proposed the freedom of creative leisure that accompanied lectures. Inside Alma Mater it can still be worth asking about these components that aren’t not fully institutional, bringing them with the right attention inside a life of a complex world like that of the University today. Mirko Degli Esposti Deputy Vice Chancellor of the University of Bologna
