It would hardly come as a surprise to you there are people who doubt, or do not outright believe in the existence of God. In fact, this may be truer now than was ever the case in the past. The reason there are more doubters now than ever is due, at least to some degree, to things like social media. Social media gives people a platform whereby they can share their thoughts and ideas, no matter how shocking, outrageous or extreme those thoughts and ideas might happen to be. There is a world-wide audience who hungers for, and are more than willing to embrace the most preposterous, ludicrous, and radical ways of thinking. It is just easier these days to sow the seeds of doubt which, in turn, lead to cynicism, scorn, and skepticism, especially when it comes to refuting the existence of God. Like it or not, we live in a world where it is easier to cast aspersions on nearly anything and everything under the sun.

So, if the existence of God is debatable, implausible, or unbelievable, as some contend, what single thing cannot be denied? Is there something in this world so clearly and indisputably true that no one could doubt its legitimacy? What cannot be challenged or contested? Perhaps there is more than one answer to this question, but, from a personal perspective, the answer which first comes to mind is this: It is the fact that we, all of us, suffer. This is an unquestionable truth. Suffering is real, it cannot be repudiated. After all, who do you know who has not suffered in some way, shape, or form? Even infants suffer when they experience hunger, or some other form of discomfort. Suffering is factual beyond any shadow of a doubt.

Suffering, in fact, could possibly serve as a form of logic to deny the existence of God. How could a God who is all loving, all merciful, allow for suffering to exist? This is particularly true when we see those who are innocent having to suffer. Why doesn’t God intervene? How can a child be born with a disability? What could she, or he, have done to deserve this happening? There are no simple answers. We cannot ever fully understand the mind of God.

What we do know is that when God brought creation into existence, the earth, initially, was perfect. Suffering was not part of God’s original plan. Christianity also teaches us God is not aloof from humanity’s sufferings. Jesus was a witness to the

pain and suffering of people throughout the course of His public ministry. He knew first-hand the agony people had to endure. He miraculously healed the anguish of many. This led people to view Him as some type of super-hero. This also didn’t stop others from turning on Him and demanding His execution. He experienced the pain of betrayal when those who comprised His inner circle abandoned Him. He suffered a savage beating by soldiers and then the humiliation and agony of a naked crucifixion in front of heckling and taunting on lookers. What He also revealed is that God’s grace, power, and strength triumphs over human suffering. The ultimate proof of this is the Resurrection of Jesus Christ.

This is why the early Christians chose the Roman Empire’s instrument of torture and oppression, the cross, as the symbol of their faith. Why else would a first century Christian openly wear this symbol and proclaim the cross as “good news?” The answer is because the cross had lost its power as a means of bullying and extortion. The Roman Empire could crucify Christians and still it did not shake their faith. The wearing of a cross confirmed their willingness to participate in Christ’s sacrificial love for all of humanity. It is almost as if those early Christians were saying to the Romans: “Is that all you got? Really? Is that the best you can do? Christ sanctified the very thing you tried to use to intimidate us.”

This doesn’t mean we foolishly look for ways to suffer. We don’t have to look for suffering, rather, suffering seems to find us. Instead, alleviating the suffering of others is a core part of our vocation as Christian Catholics. Some do this through their professions, others financially support charities, still others volunteer their time and give of themselves in other meaningful ways. In addition to giving glory, praise, and honor to God, whenever we relieve the suffering of another human being, we attest to our faith in Our Father who art in Heaven. We do this in the name of the Lord, and what we do will not go unnoticed by the God whom we believe in with all our heart, mind, and soul. The God whose faith we profess knows and rewards those who do good in His name. There is no need for doubt for those who believe in such a compassionate and benevolent God.

Come Meet Our

New Youth Minister!

Page 4: It would hardly come as a surprise to you there

You may have heard the saying from Dynamic Catholic, “Be Bold be Catholic!” When I reflected on this weekend’s gospel the first thing that came to mind was, “Wow, that’s a rather bold request!” I don’t think that I’d have the boldness or misguided boldness to ask Jesus, “...we want you to do for us whatever we ask of you.” That statement, which was not a question, was a bit presumptuous, wasn’t it? My next thought was, “be careful what you ask for. You just might get it!” The next point to ponder came when the Apostles James and John asked to be on Jesus’ right and left. Picture, if you will, the crucifixion, In particular, I saw the two men who were on Jesus’ right and left when Jesus came into his glory. Those two men, criminals, suffered the kind of death Jesus did. James and John were not criminals but James’ and John’s requests were answered in that James died a martyr, and John was exiled on Patmos, not exactly very prestigious positions to find oneself in.

The Gospel continues with the other apostles becoming “indignant,” either because they wanted to be on Jesus’ right and left or they were thinking, “Did I really just hear those two ask for that? Who do they think they are?!” Either way, Jesus reacts to them and summoned them,. In great Jesus fashion began a “teachable moment.” He explains how the secular world of politics works and how oppressive governments can be, even if they think they are “helping.” That has happened throughout all of history and happens today in varying degrees. In varying places.

Then Jesus drops the truth bomb. He tells them, and us as well, that “whoever wishes to be great among you will be your servant; whoever

wishes to be first among you will be the slave of all. For the Son of Man did not come to be served but to serve and give his life.”

The “emblem,” seen below, is the emblem for the Permanent Diaconate. It is the first of the three Holy Orders of ordained clergy in the Catholic Church, the “Holy Order” to which I was ordained a over eight years ago now. What a blessing those eight plus years have been to me and my family. A great blessing to be here at St. Paul of Tarsus and a deacon for our “Family of Parishes” as well. My assignment

has expanded. I was ordained a deacon and deacons are to live in conformity to today’s gospel as servants of the servants of Christ. The ministry of the deacon is one of service. Which is why my “official title,” the way I’m supposed to be referred to in a public setting, is “Deacon Marc.” My formal title is Reverend Mister. However, I will always respond to “Marc” and am not offended by the friendly use of my name.

We are all called to be in the service of others. That is part of our baptismal call and our call to proclaim the gospel through our service. That is what evangelization truly is. This is a great and complex commitment that we have all undertaken as Catholics. This commitment requires that we exercise prudence, patience, and lots of prayer. Which brings me back to my original thought, “Be careful what you pray (ask) for. You just might get it!” God does indeed answer all prayers and gives us what we NEED not necessarily what we WANT. He also gives us his answers in very unexpected ways. So, when it comes to answers from God, expect the unexpected and always know that they are given with God’s….

Peace, Love and Blessings,

Deacon Marc

KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS

Baby Bottle Drive

Please return your bottles

October 16 & 17 or 23 & 24

Once again, the St. Paul of Tarsus Knights of Columbus is sponsoring a Baby Bottle Drive to benefit Gianna House and Abigayle Ministries. Gianna House and Abigayle Ministries are, nonprofit organizations that minister to pregnant teens and homeless pregnant women and their children by introducing them to the gospel of Jesus Christ AND equipping them to be self-sufficient through its residential and educational program. They welcome homeless, pregnant women in their residential program and teach them life skills. In addition, they have a resource center (much like our food pantry) that provides any pregnant woman, or woman with young children with basic needs for their babies, such as formula, diapers, shampoo, baby wash, powder, creams, and clothing. The bottle drive is a fund raiser in which we provide the bottles to our most generous, giving, and caring congregation to fill with loose change, dollar bills, or checks. You, in turn, return the filled (as much as possible) baby bottles, and we return them to Abigayle Ministries, who will use the money as deemed necessary.

Thank you for your generosity, Respect Life Ministry of the St. Paul of Tarsus Knights of Columbus.

CAN YOU HELP?

Can you help the Seminarians of Sacred Heart Major Seminary provide a Halloween for the children around the Seminary?

By donating a bag of candy you will join in and help the seminarians provide a safe place to Trick or Treat as they open the doors of the Seminary to the children who live around that neighborhood.

The last day to drop candy will be Sunday, October 24.

Thanks and God Bless!
