Penn State Course Popular~ HE three-weeks' course at Penn State proved verypopular this year and much good seemed to come fromit. At the close of the course a three-day conferencewas held at which more than sixty clubs were repre-sented.

Mr. John QuaiII,

Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

Enclosed find money order for ten dollars ($10.00),same being membership dues for 1931 in the NationalAssociation of Greenkeepers of America.

While I was unable to attend the Show and Confer-ence at Columbus, I feel the officers of the Nationalassociation and all men who are instrumental in con-ducting the Convention and Golf Show deserve a com-ment of appreciation on their efforts to help their fel-low-greenkeepers. May the good work continue.

For sometime I have wondered why the Question andAnswer column in the National GreenkeejJcr wasdoomed to death in its infancy. Surely there are anynumber of green keepers who have been losing sleep thepast two dry summers turning over and over in theirminds some problems of course management which haveadded a few gray hairs to their heads.

If we could have all the questions tha t exist in theminds of our members published and answered in theN atiol1al Greel1kee per) I am sure it would be of greatbenefit to many, and furthermore it would fulfill yourhopes of having the magazine so large as to badly cripplethe financial status of the Editor.

A letter from Mr. Power, Editor of the NationalGreenkeeper, asked for a number of questions which Isent to the office of the magazine some time ago. Thesewere forwarded to Professor Lawrence S. Dickinson,Amherst, Massachusetts, for publication. Althoughthey have been solved quite satisfactorily for me throughour course at Michigan State College, I shall submit sameupon receipt of answers from Professor Dickinson.Should any conflicting solutions arise I wiII let it beknown. I think we will all welcome constructive criti-cism and from it grow bigger and better than ever.

about sixty per cent of the fairways areon marshland with the water table justunder the grass roots. The club recentlydammed Chain-a-Lakes, which nearly

surrounds the property. A new automaticpumping plant is being installed. Wen-dell P. Miller and Associates were engi-

Mr. H. W. Eldredge, who has been

Green chairman for sixteen years and re-

cently elected to the presidency, was in-strumental in bringing about the installa-tion, which was preceded by a full sea-son's demonstration on part of one fair-

way which effectively proved to themembership the value of fairway irriga-

small pipe, tee and green water systems.

Queens Valley Golf Club (LongIsland) has let contracts for an 18 -holehoseless irrigation system and automaticpumping plant which will be constructed

early this spring from plans and speci-fications by Wendell P. Miller and Asso-ciates. This club was planning to installa hose system designed at home but final-ly decided that Wendell Miller's famous"finality in the first instance" wouldprove the cheapest in the long run.

Our reporter learns that the club doesnot employ an experienced green keeper ,but it is believed that with the addedfacilities and resulting increased play anexperienced man may be employed. TheGreen chairman is Judge Frank F. Add.
