I am glad to sit for writing few words for Indus News after
passing through great and rewarding hardships in the post flood
disaster of July 2010.
I am happy to see the organization engaged in the welfare oriented
activities with greater zeal and enthusiasm in the better interests of
the marginalized people in the twin districts of Kohistan & Shangla.
I am highly thankful to all those individuals and organizations who
have worked with us for a common and greater cause. The
commitment, fair play and missionary zeal in look & display of
ISWDO's staff has enabled us to accomplish several targets with
greater level of success. Thanks are extended to all of them. The
partnership with Catholic Relief Services (CRS) has been of greater
inspiration and token of appreciation for all of us. Believing in
reciprocal relationships, I do extend my hands of cooperation to
all those organizations and individuals who are interested in
seeing a positive change in this area. With these few words, I
would love to welcome any comments and suggestions
regarding the progress in our work and activities in the
days ahead. Let's all pray Almighty Allah to save us all &
our planet from all kinds of disasters in the days to
come and bless us with peace in this world and
hereafter (Ameen).

primary education and MHPs in the target area. In addition to
this, the capacity building branch of the organization has also
started work to provide basic trainings in the trades like;
plumbing, electrical work, computer, Masonry and Tailoring for
the unemployed youth from the flood affected community of
Dubbair and Ranolia Valleys of district Kohistan. This project of
providing training for 60 individuals in the above mentioned skill
trades has been started jointly with RABT Development

During our joint venture with CRS, we have found both of
our teams selected as enough trained, polished

to meet any given challenge with success. The teams are,
therefore, worth appreciation with weaknesses
negligible in the face of increasing strengths.

ISWDO in collaboration with CRS with donated funds from
CHACH has started a huge project on the rehabilitation of micro
hydro power stations and water mills in the flood affected unioncouncils from Dubbair & Ranolia Valleys Kohistan. It is aimed at
rehabilitating the flood affected communal power stations and
water mills.
A regular joint venture of CRS/ISWDO with the above
given title was about to start in August last year which
was delayed due to flood disaster and emergencyresponse to it.
Thus, it was started later this year in May with the aim to
improve the condition of primary education in four
selected union councils; 2 each from Shangla & Kohistan
districts. This is a program where support is being sought
from teachers, parents, line department and religious
leaders.
It has a unique methodology of linking the education of
both the boys and girls with the teachings of Islam andan awareness campaign based on this to create
awareness among public in this direction.
Its approach also involves complete community
participation at various levels. The program has two
main components; hard and soft. The hard component
further involves repair of existing schooling facilities,
addition of new space in terms of rooms construction or
shelter provision, repair and rehabilitation of basic
amenities associated with the children and school
building, provision of audio visual aids and otherlearning material to the students. The soft component
on the other hand covers; joyful learning, reactivation
and formation of parent teacher Councils (PTCs),
Training of PTCs and PTCs exposure visits.
In four union councils of the twin districts of Shangla &
Kohistan, a total of 33 schools have been taken under
this project. Out of this, 24 are in Kohistan and 09 in
Shangla district. Out of the total, there are 9 girls'
primary schools, 19 boys' primary schools, and 5 boys'
Maktab schools.

Lobbying, Linkages & Coordination
ISWDO as an organization believes in mutual coordination,
reciprocal learning, and linkages development with other
organizations believing in social welfare and above all remains
part and parcel of every program having the agenda similarity
with it at regional, national and international levels. It is in thisbackground that ISWDO was one of the leading lobbying agents
at different occasions since the year 2004 to convince the
provincial government for making arrangement of curriculum
development in local languages to start Mother tongue based
Multi Lingual Education. It was in the early months of the current
year that provincial government of KPK at last approved
curriculum development for five local languages (Indus
Kohistani, Hindko, Khawar, Saraiki & Torwali). The task has been
assigned to KPK Text Book Board, Peshawar. KPK TBB has been
advised to develop the curriculum in these languages from class
1-12. This is one of the greater successes for ISWDO as it was partof its agenda. It was in this background that TBB had invited
ISWDO officials to take part in a meeting aiming at
standardization of alphabets for Indus Kohistani language on
June 16, 2011.
Likewise, ISWDO was invited to a 3 days indigenous cultural
festival by IBT, held in Behrain Swat from July 11-13, 2011. Thus,
ISWDO staff had participated in this festival.
