LIVESTOCK JUDGING

Are you spending some time this winter cleaning out the machine shed? We are looking for scrap

metal pieces to put into our buckets. If you have anything, we would love to take some off your hands.

We are looking for all different types of metal. Call today to sign up for your bucket of junk!

PAINTING WORKSHOP

Learn the basics of livestock judging from an experienced livestock judge, Dustin Smith. We will be

partnering with the Buena Vista County 4-H to learn about livestock judging, understand the reasoning

behind completion placings, and get some real life experience evaluating cattle, sheep and swine. This

training will be a great foundation to help more of our county 4-H members feel qualified to participate

in livestock judging. Livestock Judging Training will be held at the Bomgaars/Expo Center at the

Cherokee Fairgrounds on Saturday, April 16th from 9–11am. Call the Extension Office to register for

this FREE workshop.

The winners of the Enrollment Challenges for this year are Quimby Clovers for biggest

percentage reenrolled by November 15th and Tilden Tillers with the biggest percentage of

NEW 4-H’ers joining! Congratulations!

4-Hers for 4-H Campaign

4-Hers investing in 4-Hers. This is the essence of the 4-Hers’ for 4-H Campaign sponsored each year by the State 4-H

Council. The campaign raises money to fund projects that benefit 4-H members throughout the state. This year marks

the 31st anniversary of the Iowa 4-Hers for 4-H Campaign. Last year, we exceeded our goal and raised over $30,000.

We want to continue that growth and have set our goal for this year at $31,000.00 with a suggested $3.00 per member

donation. We also want every county in Iowa to participate! YOU can help grow 4-H in Iowa!

*Leaders should be receiving something in the mail soon. The campaign kicks off on March 1st and all contributions

must be in turned into the County Extension Office by May 15th.

Join us for a White House Painting Workshop scheduled for Tuesday, March 22nd at 6:30p.m. at the Cherokee County Extension Office meeting room. Check the website out for a picture of the painting. All supplies will be provided. Open to all 4-Hers, friends, and families. Pre-registration is required along with a $25 fee.

Livestock Rule Changes/Updates

The State 4-H Office has provided new livestock updates for the 2016 year. Check out the Livestock Updates.

Identifying Animals in 4HOnline

Again this year - we are asking 4-H exhibitors to identify their animals in 4HOnline instead of on ID forms. This will cut

out a lot of extra paperwork plus will give us the reports that we need for the fair. Remember that only animals identified

can be shown at our fair. Animals that need to be entered in 4HOnline include swine, cow/calf pairs, breeding beef

(unless you already identified animal at Jan. weigh-in), sheep (breeding only), horse, dairy cattle, bottle lambs,

bucket/bottle calves, poultry, rabbits, pets, meat goats (breeding only), or dogs.

Here is what to do to enter animals in 4HOnline:

1. Go to https://ia.4honline.com and login like you did when you re-enrolled in 4-H. If you have never logged in before

please call the office so we can give you a temporary password. Once in the program you will be able to reset your

password to something that you can remember.

2. Once you are in the program, find your name and click "Edit". That will take you to your Personal Information Screen.

On that screen near the top of the page you will see a tab titled “Animals/Livestock”. Click on the tab.

3. There you will then see a drop down box and any previously entered animals listed. Select the animal you want to

enter and click the “Add Animal” button.

4. Enter the information requested and click the “Save” button. All animal IDs must be submitted no later than May 15th

at 11:59 PM. At midnight the program will shut down and the only animals you will be able to add after that are

rabbits and poultry. Rabbits and poultry can be added until 11:59 PM on July 1st. Make sure that any animal

that you plan to exhibit (with the exception of rabbits and poultry) is on the list before you close out!

For market swine: You will need to come to the office and get your ear tags ($1.50 each) first and then complete

the entry online. NEW for 2016 – State Fair is now requiring ear notches along with the DNA punch tag.

Horse Exhibitors: You will need to upload 4 photos (front view, rear view, left side view, and right side view) to

complete your entry. If you have problems with this, please contact the Extension Office.

For breeding beef: You MUST enter at least one tattoo if you plan to show your heifer at the Iowa State Fair this

also includes market heifers that are showing as breeding. If you enter the calfhood vaccination number or leave

both fields blank, the heifer WILL NOT be eligible for the Iowa State Fair. All fields (including registration number)

must be complete and accurate no later than May 15th. If no registration number is entered by May 15th, the heifer

will only be allowed to show as crossbred.

COOL and 4-H Livestock What 4-H’ers Need to Do:

The Iowa COOL Coalition has come up with a simple

affidavit that can work for all species of livestock (beef,

sheep, swine, poultry, goat). This affidavit is located at:

SWINE

4-H Swine Identification for State Fair

ALL State Fair swine will need a DNA punch tag plus ear notches. The ear notches are new this year.

Below are the steps a 4-Her must do to identify swine for State Fair:

1. 4-H family goes to county office before May 15th and requests the # of DNA tags they need (one per pig), a tagger,

and a DNA envelope. Both market and breeding swine need to have DNA tags for State Fair. Cost per tag is $8.00.

2. 4-H’er returns home and tags each pig.

3. Puts DNA sample tag into large envelope for all pigs (one envelope per 4-H’er).

4. Writes down tag numbers on back of DNA envelope.

5. 4-Her and parent/guardian signs and seals the DNA envelope and returns tagger and DNA envelope to county office

by May 15th.

6. By May 15th – 4-Her then inputs all data for each pig into 4HOnline under Swine (not weighed in).

7. 4-Her then makes actual State Fair entries due in 4hOnline by Friday, July 1st.

WEIGH IN

All market lambs and commercial ewes to be shown at

the 2016 Cherokee County Fair must be weighed in on that day. No breeding animals need to be weighed in.

If you are planning to go to the Iowa State Fair or Ak-Sar-Ben, please contact the Extension Office BEFORE

April 15th. For more information, please contact the Cherokee County Extension Office at 712-225-6196 or

Kyle Schmillen at 712-376-2033.
