X ANNUAL ITALIAN LANGUAGE WEEKWITH THE PATRONAGE OF THE PRESIDENT OF THE REPUBLIC

Every year an increasing number of students attend Italian language courses outside Italy, in every country throughout the world. Why?

Italian is a language of culture. Speaking Italian means having access not only to an extremely valuable literary heritage, essential to the history of Europe and to extremely precious humanistic and scientific texts, but also to Italian design, art, architecture, theatre, music, opera, cinema and television.

Italian is a language of study. Every year a number of students decide to attend our schools, universities, academies and libraries.

Italian is a language of work. Managers, investors, technicians, artisans and workers get in touch with Italy’s word of industry, craft and services, which crosses the borders of our country.

Speaking Italian will turn a visit to our country and its friendly and hospitable people, its artistic cities and its beautiful nature into a real pleasure.

The annual Italian language Week, now in its tenth year, aims to promote Italian language and culture in the world. The theme chosen by the Italian Ministry of Foreign affairs for 2010 is: “Una lingua per amica: l’italiano nostro e degli altri” (A language as a friend: our Italian and the Italian of others).

This year the Italian Language Week in New Delhi will be celebrated with a series of events coordinated by the Istituto Italiano di Cultura.

An interesting and exciting quiz aimed at increasing knowledge of Italy - the land, its people, their history and culture - among the youth of India. The top schools of Delhi and NCR are being invited to participate in a contest that will test the knowledge of students about Italy and encourage them to learn and know more about the country.

The questions, presented in a variety of interesting formats, would be drawn from subjects like History, Geography, the Italian people and their culture, Literature, Art and Architecture, Business and Economy, Science and Technology, Sporting achievements, Cuisine, Folk and traditional Arts and Crafts.

Each School interested in participating may send up to a maximum of 3 teams, each comprising two students from Classes VIII to XII. All teams that will thus register for the quiz will first participate in a written preliminary test, comprising 25 to 30 questions. On evaluation, six teams that emerge with the highest scores will proceed to the on-stage Final Round, a 75-80 minute multimedia extravaganza featuring the main quiz, which will use a diverse array of question-types, to tease and test the participants’ knowledge of various facets of Italy.

SOTTO IL CELIO AzzURRO A School with a View 2009, 80 min. A documentary film

About the Director : Edoardo Winspeare

In the last ten years, a brand new crop of talented, original filmmakers has emerged from Italy, bringing with them a fresh look into their country’s modern face. Their films are not like the classics of the 50’s and 60’s, nor are they stereotypical in their portrayal of Italians. These films of the New Italian Cinema, are vignettes of contemporary life, with its challenges, social issues and in some cases, teen angst. They are made by writers and directors indifferent to the trends, but loyal to themselves, to their visions and dreams of what a film should be. This new crop of directors has something in common with each other. They make films for their own satisfaction, not for their critics. Among these new filmmakers is Edoardo Winspeare. Born in Austria, he was raised in Italy, where his Italian origins go back 300 years. Winner of several national and international awards and recognitions, Edoardo Winspeare is known for using the work of local musicians and casting many non-professional actors.

SOTTO IL CELIO AzzURRO A School with a View 2009, 80 min.

About the film

Celio Azzurro is a nursery school in the heart of Rome that has become a role model by virtue of the multicultural education imparted to the smallest of children. The film recounts the story of the energy and passion of a group of teachers who struggle for its survival in today’s Italy. Celio Azzurro is a first of its kind school set up in 1990 that brings foreign children of a pre-school going age under its wing. Today the school has 45 children in the age group of 3 to 5 years, belonging to 32 different nationalities. Strongly supported and still being run by a motivated and heterogeneous group of teachers, the school stands out as a front line didactic and cultural experience professed by all but practiced by few. Revolving around one academic year in this school, the film offers a deep look into the real life of a group of impassioned individuals who persistently and rigorously take each day ahead with the children, instilling into them respect for their own identities and for each other. It is also an exhilarating experience that transports one into ones own childhood.

Cast: Elio Germano, Riccardo Scamarcio, Angela Finocchiaro, Luca ZingarettiProduced by: Riccardo Tozzi, Giovanni Stabilini, Marco Chimenz

Growing up in a small town in Italy during the ‘60s and ‘70s, brothers Accio (Elio Germano) and Manrico (Riccardo Scamarcio) embody and celebrate opposing political stances, but share an impassioned love of the same woman that threatens to drive them to blows. ITALIAN PARTICIPATION IN THE RAJASTHAN INTERNATIONAL FOLK FESTIvAL - RIFF Italy with a flavour of Rajasthan

Concert by Francesca Cassio & Simone Schirru with musicians from Manganiar and Langas communities

Francesca Cassio (singer) and Simone Schirru (guitar player) are Italians trained in Western and Indian music. For this evening they will perform traditional compositions based on a combination of Italian folk tunes and Indian melodies from Rajasthan. The music will take the audience on a journey through time, where the tradition of oral improvisation is still a very fundamental part of the interpretation.

Most of the Italian repertoire was originally connected to rituals and dance forms from the villages; an example of this is a composition that is considered to be part of a healing ritual after the bite of a legendary spider called the Tarantella (tarantula). The Duo, along with the accompaniment of Indian musicians from the local Manganiar and Langa traditions of Rajasthan, will lead the audience into a state of musical ecstasy, illustrating the fusion of two old cultures.

Event organized by Rajasthan International Folk Festival – RIFF, CRN Productions Centre for Performing Arts, Jodhpur in collaboration with Istituto Italiano di Cultura.

INAUGURATION IN MUMBAI OF THE X ITALIAN LANGUAGE WEEK with a Lecture Demostration by Francesca Cassio (vocal) and Mo Simone Schirru (guitar) on “Italian traditional musical style”

The aim of the Lecture Demonstration is to give to Indian students a wide view on the different musical traditions of Italy, known worldwide for the treasure of classical music, and especially for the vocal genre of Lirica and its techniques that Dr. Cassio will explain and demonstrate in detail. Though musica Lirica and Opera are some of the main genres, it is also important to explain the rich folk music traditions of South and North Italy, strongly connected to the life in villages and their ceremonies. Dr. Cassio will sing and talk about these repertories, showing a documentary film on the healing ritual after the bite of a legendary spider called the Tarantella (tarantula). The lesson will also highlight some aspects of the contemporary tradition of songwriters, with particular reference to the relation between lyrics and music. During the lecture a possibility of fusion between Italian and Indian music will also be discussed and demonstrated by the Duo with the accompaniment of sarangi and tabla.

“I interviewed elderly people and came upon many traditional songs. And people told me that the old songs were played on the piva and not the accordion as popularly assumed, but I had no idea what that was.” Ilario Garbani.

The bagpipe is thought to date back to pre-Christian times and there were hundreds of different types across Europe. The various Swiss models disappeared over the past few centuries as the fife and drum became more popular and it was the mandolin and accordion that sounded the piva’s death knell in Ticino. If it weren’t for the devotion of teacher and musician, Ilario Garbani, the piva may have been relegated to the dusty shelves of a Ticino heritage museum. A few years before Garbani began his research, a well-preserved bagpipe chanter was found among a pile of junk in a cupboard of a house undergoing restoration in the village of Sonogno in the Verzasca valley. Ilario Garbani carried out more than ten years of research on traditional music in Ticino’s Onsernone valley, culminating in the publication of the songbook, “Canzoniere della Mea d’Ora” in 1992. Garbani performs in various duos and trios keeping alive the musical traditions of Ticino and northern Italy.
