  • PORTABLES from ppm to 20% by volume, with the lower ranges of-fering better resolution. CO is available in % volumeranges, and hydrocarbon ranges are available from %LELup to 100% by volume, depending upon the gas.

PHOTOIONIZATION DETECTOR (PID)Photoionization detectors (PID) operate by ionizing the

target gas with ultra-violet radiation, and then collectingthe ions across a high voltage plate which produces anelectrical signal proportional to the gas present. PIDsoffer fast response for many Volatile Organic Compounds(VOCs), including, among others, benzene, vinyl chlo-ride, phosphine, and hexane.

ELECTROCHEMICALElectrochemical sensors operate by producing a chemi-

cal reaction with the gas of interest. Sensors are availablefor certain toxic gases in ppm ranges, including NH3, CO,Cl2, H2, HCl, HCN, H2S, NO, NO2, O2, O3, and SO2. Forsome of these gases, electrochemical sensors can offer afairly high degree of selectivity. Electrochemical sensorshave a life expectancy of 1 to 2 years and come with a 1year warranty.

CATALYTIC BEADCatalytic Bead sensors operate by burning combustible

gases, raising the temperature of the sensor. This temper-ature rise changes the resistance of the sensor andproduces a signal proportional to the gas concentration. They detect combustible gases in higher concentrations(above 1000 ppm) only. They are not selective and will re-spond to a wide range of combustible gases. However, since they only detect higher gas concentrations, they arenot prone to interference from many toxic gases. CatalyticBead sensors have a life expectancy of 2 years and comewith a 1 year warranty.

    1 2 3 4 5

IST offers 5 different types of sensors: Solid State, Infrared, Photoionization, Catalytic Bead, andElectrochemical. This gives you the flexibility to choosethe best sensor(s) for your particular application. A briefdescription of each sensor type follows:

SOLID STATESolid State sensors are made of a heated metal oxide

material which temporarily changes resistance in thepresence of gas. Solid State sensors are available for thedetection of over 150 different toxic and combustiblegases, in ranges from low ppm %LEL. A list of gases andranges appears on the back of this brochure. Solid Statesensors come with a 3 year warranty, and have a life ex-pectancy in excess of 10 years.

INFRARED SENSOR (IR)Infrared (IR) sensors detect gases that absorb light in

the infrared spectrum. Sensors for carbon dioxide (CO2),carbon monoxide, and hydrocarbons (such as Methane, etc.) are currently available. IR sensors offer good selec-tivity and good lifetimes. Ranges for CO2 are available

    4 GAS, CONFINEDSPACE ENTRYPORTABLEMODEL IQ-200

ISTs Model IQ-200 requiresjust two sensors for confinedspace entry applications, asingle solid state sensor forCO, H2S, and combustiblegases, and an electrochemicalsensor for oxygen. This makes theIQ-200 much more affordable than comparable confinedspace entry portables. Additionally, both the solid stateand oxygen sensors used in the IQ-200 are long-life sen-sors. Typical life expectancy is 5 years for the O2 sensorand over 10 years for the solid state sensor. This results ina tremendous savings in long term operating costs asso-ciated with sensor replacement.

The IQ-200 has an audible alarm buzzer, and alarmLEDs indicate low, mid, and high alarm levels for thesolid state sensor, and low and high alarms for the O2 sen-sor. The IQ-200 does not incorporate a sample pump andsamples by diffusion only. It is small and lightweight, weighing just 22 ounces, including batteries. It operateson 4 size AA alkaline or nicad batteries, or the ACadapter/charger. Carrying case is included.
