Cultural Heritage Applications IST-1999-10954
• 24 months (start: january 2000)• Aim: Creation on the Internet of a source of high-quality data for both
morphological and kinematics models of human joints• Two pilot services will be established:
• data (raw, geometric, finite elements) for industry and visualisation• tutorial services for medical training
• Investigation of:• kinematics & 3-D visualisation• interactive interfaces for multimedia• real-time volumetric rendering• economic models for producing tutorials
Duration & Objectives
Cultural Heritage Applications IST-1999-10954
Objectives (some examples)
•New data and knowledge in anatomy
•Transmition of this knowledge via tutorials for medical education (medical students & staff, bio-engineers).

Objectives (benefits)
• Data for Industrial, Educational & Research Purposes:
•To provide access to knowledge to improve treatment of joint diseases
•Integration of results will be valuable for bio-engineering simulations
•Extended visualisation and teaching services will provide a platform for “products” derived from the raw data
•direct value to the elderly and disabled of Europe
•supports UNESCO “The Bone”
Finite elements
Kinematics & Geometry
Cultural Heritage Applications IST-1999-10954
• High-quality data services will be developed for industrial & academics users
• An educational service will be created using state-of-the-art multimedia, 3-D and virtual reality interfaces to demonstrate joint behaviour and provide tutorials for medical profession
• Annual user conferences, promotional material, Web site, public tutorial and industrial demonstrators, establishment of a user group
• Administrative details: • total cost: 1,478,206 euro• EC contribution: 1,100,000 euro• Project Officer: Mr Claude POLIART
Milestones & Budget
Cultural Heritage Applications IST-1999-10954
Problems & Solutions
• Personnel recruitment• EU shortage in highly qualified personnel• Announcement send to 120 professionnal lists• Recruitment of non-EU citizens long
administrative procedures (workpermit, visa, …) DELAY !
• Solutions• To allow a «recruiting» period between contract
signature and official start of the projects• To decrease the length of the administrative
procedures• To make Universities more attractive
