The 5th general meeting of Trans-Int, an EU Framework 7 Consortium,

took place in the School of Pharmacy in April 2016. Over 45 scientists,

postdoctoral researchers and PhD students took part in discussions relating

to formulation of nanomedicines for oral administration. The program also

included a training session for PhD students, where talks by Prof John

F Cryan, UCC and Dr Niamh Curran, HPRA, and a workshop on ‘transitioning

Students of Postgraduate Certificate in (Bio)Pharma Processing graduated in November 2016. The PG Cert was designed by School of Pharmacy staff, Drs Abina Crean, Katie Ryan and Eoin Fleming in conjunction with the Adult Education Centre and Careers Services, UCC to facilitate science or engineering graduates to transition into employment in the (Bio)Pharma sector. The programme was funded through the government initiative Springboard (www.springboardcourses.ie). During the programme the students were provided with a practical and theoretical understanding of the processes involved in (Bio)Pharma manufacture. Practical sessions were delivered in the state of the art pilot scale facilities in the School of Pharmacy and National Institute for Bioprocessing Research and Training (NIBRT), Dublin. A key element of the programme was supporting participants with career coaching and job readiness.

Dr Christian Waeber received HRB funding for preclinical stroke studies. A

preclinical study aimed at establishing the potential of fingolimod as an acute

stroke therapeutic agent was recently funded by the Health Research Board.

Stroke is the third most common cause of death and the most common cause of

acquired physical disability in Ireland. The only available drug, recombinant

tissue plasminogen activator (tPA), can only be used in a small minority of

patients. Thus, the need for an effective and easily administered treatment

remains paramount. Dr Waeber and others have found that fingolimod is

effective in several rodent stroke models. Such findings and the fact that

fingolimod is already licensed for another neurological indication (multiple

sclerosis) suggest that fingolimod is one of the most compelling candidates ever

characterized in stroke models. But hundreds of drugs effective in animals have

failed to show efficacy in humans; this has greatly raised the bar to justify the

considerable expenses and risks of a clinical trials. In his project, Dr Waeber

therefore proposes to implement recommendations issued by stroke experts to

decrease the gap between preclinical and clinical studies.

Researchers Corner: Featured Researcher – Dr Habib Baghirov

POSITION: POSTDOCTORAL RESEARCHER SUPERVISORS: PROF. CAITRIONA O’DRISCOLL, PROF. JOHN CRYAN

Originally a medical doctor from Azerbaijan, I spent several years working in medical research in my home country before moving to Finland in 2010. There I enrolled in a MS Program in Biomedical Imaging and proposed to investigate nanoparticle transport across the blood-brain barrier. After graduating in 2012, I researched cell invasion in cancer, using a number of imaging techniques and high-content screening. In 2013, I moved to Norway, to do a PhD in brain nanomedicine. My project employed multiple imaging modalities and, at the final stage, advanced medical technology. I now continue investigating nanoparticle transport across the blood-brain barrier as a postdoctoral researcher in Ireland. My key research interest is nanocarrier-based drug delivery to the brain, and my main expertise is in biomedical imaging. In my postdoctoral project at UCC, I work on the delivery of cyclodextrin-based nanoparticles across the blood-brain barrier in

glioblastoma treatment. Glioblastoma is a primary brain cancer with dismal prognosis; its treatment is complicated by tumor

heterogeneity and restricted access to diseased cells due to the presence of the blood-brain barrier. Novel therapeutic

strategies and delivery methods are clearly needed. The nanoparticles I am using are loaded with nucleic acids intercepting

cancer cell signaling and targeted for crossing the blood-brain barrier and entering diseased cells. The project involves in vitro

and in vivo studies, and its ultimate goal is to deliver these biopharmaceuticals into the brain to improve therapeutic outcome

in glioblastoma.
