Quick Concrete Fixes

Q: My concrete driveway runs right up next to the house. I noticed yesterday a crack running from where the driveway meets the corner of the house. How can I fix this? I'm wor-ried that water will seep through the crack into the base-ment. -- Carl in Trenton, N.J.

A: If the crack is not very wide -- less than 1/8 inch -- and you don't see any water seeping into the basement from that corner, patch the crack with concrete caulk or a concrete patching compound on a dry day. A wider crack can be temporarily patched by brushing out debris, then filling the crack with sand and covering with waterproof tape. This will stop water seepage for a few days, at least, until you can make the time to permanently patch the driveway. On a dry day, uncover and brush the sand out of the crack. Using a small chisel and hammer, smooth the inside walls of the crack and angle them slightly so that the crack is slightly wider at the bottom than at the top. Mix up a batch of concrete -- just enough to fill the crack, plus a little extra. Spray a little water from a handheld spray bottle into the crack, then use a trowel to smooth the concrete into the crack. Pack the concrete in firmly until it mounds over the surface; then smooth it even. Allow the patch to air-dry for a couple of hours. Then, cover the patched surface with plastic sheeting to prevent any moisture from getting in. The patch must cure for about five days.

HOME TIP: When purchasing concrete, buy only what you need for the job, as it doesn't store well and is very suscep-tible to moisture.

An End to Mandatory Overdraft Pro-tection

Until now, users of ATM or debit cards could make purchases that basically cleared their accounts, and then some, and the bank would cover the overage temporarily -- for a fee. Sometimes the overdraft was accidental, perhaps due to a mistake made in the checkbook. Other times it was a gas station that caused the problem: Use a debit card to buy gas at a pre-pay pump, and more often than not an amount much larger than the actual purchase would be put on "hold" for the balance of the day. Or maybe the con-sumer knew in advance that there wasn't enough money for a purchase. No matter the reason, if an overdraft was cre-ated, the bank charged fees that netted the banking industry many billions of dollars per year. If multiple transactions were made, multiple fees would be charged. It was the hefty overdraft fees -- often amounting to $30 or more per occurrence -- that consumers said were excessive, and the complaints stacked up at the Federal Reserve.Starting next summer, banks will have to ask permission of consumers to charge overdraft fees. Account owners will have to opt in to have overdraft protection, and banks will be limited to charging one overdraft fee per month or six per year.Unless consumers sign up for overdraft protection (and pay the resulting fees,) the end results could be harsh. Instead of a bank covering any overages (and charging a fee for it), ATM and debit cards will be shut off once the withdrawal exceeds the amount in the account -- right in the middle of a transaction. Here are some suggestions: Sign up for the overdraft protection in case of an emergen-cy expense. If you don't have the money in the bank, that overdraft fee might be a welcome expense.Balance your accounts every month and don't spend what you don't have. Pay attention to the information leaflets that come in your

statements. Expect fees for other services to go up and minimum balances on accounts to go higher. Banks are go-ing to miss those billions of dollars and will need to make them up in others ways.

David Uffington regrets that he cannot personally answer reader questions, but will incorporate them into his column whenever possible. Write to him in care of King Features Weekly Service, P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475, or send e-mail to [email protected].

On Dec. 10, 1901, the first Nobel Prizes are awarded in Stockholm, Sweden, on the fifth anniver-sary of the death of Alfred Nobel, the Swedish inventor of dynamite and other high explosives. Although Nobel offered no reason for his creation of the prizes, it is believed he did so out of moral regret over the increasingly lethal uses of his inventions in war.

On Dec. 12, 1917, in Omaha, Neb., Father Edward J. Flanagan, a 31-year-old Irish priest, opens the doors to a home for troubled and neglected children. Today "Boys and Girls Town" includes a grade school, a high school and a career vocational center on a farm 10 miles west of Omaha.

On Dec. 7, 1925, future Tarzan actor Johnny Weissmuller sets the world record for the 150-yard freestyle swim. Already a gold medalist from the 1924 Olympics, Weissmuller competed again in 1928, taking five gold med-als in all. In 1931, MGM cast Weissmuller to play the title role in "Tarzan the Ape Man."

United Nations votes to establish the United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund (UNICEF), an organization to help provide relief and support to children living in countries devastated by the war.

On Dec. 13, 1950, an unknown actor named James Dean appears in a Pepsi commercial. Dean would later personify the angry, restless youth culture in the film "Rebel Without a Cause" (1955). He died in a car crash in 1955 at age 24.

On Dec. 8, 1987, at a summit meeting in Washington, D.C., President Ronald Reagan and Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev sign the first treaty between the two superpow-ers to reduce their massive nuclear arsenals. "When cutting Christmas wrapping paper, I open my adjustable dining-room table just a crack so a par-ing knife fits in. Then lay the paper flat, and by fol-lowing the crack, you can cut a straight line, and it is so quick to do." -- H.H. in Minnesota

"We let the kids decorate our holiday storage tubs last year with a mass of stickers and permanent markers. It seemed like decoration overkill at the time (they were 3 and 5), but there was no mistaking those tubs when we went to get them from the attic this year. They stood WAY out!" -- T.C. in Tennessee

Go Green Tip: Gift bags are so convenient for wrapping. And so pretty. Re-use them. Encourage others to reuse theirs as well. Want an interesting filler? Collect previously used wrapping paper and shred it. Festive and functional.

PAW'S CORNERBy Sam Mazzotta

Dog Parks

DEAR PAW'S CORNER: I am part of a group bringing a dog park to Canton, Ga. Can you tell your readers about the benefits of dog parks? Thanks. -- Alessa S., Canton Paw Park Association (http://www.cantonpawpark.com )

DEAR ALESSA: Certainly! I am definitely for dog parks -- and not just in urban settings, but in suburban areas as well. Dog parks provide a place for pets to play off-leash, something that is becoming a luxury in the United States as municipal leash laws become more and more restrictive.Providing a place for dogs to play and work off excess energy -- without disturbing other members of the commu-nity -- seems like a win-win situation. But surprisingly, dog parks often face opposition from the community. The most common argument is that tax dollars shouldn't be spent on a park that will only be used by a portion of the community. Others see dog parks as additional liability for a city or town, with potential lawsuits arising from incidents with off-leash dogs. I've even heard from dog owners who have had negative experiences at dog parks, most often when their dog is attacked by another dog. These viewpoints all merit consideration. A poorly planned and managed dog park can cause more problems than it solves, and it's al-ways important to consider how municipal funds are spent. In the case of the Canton Paw Park Association, the dog park is funded through donations to the nonprofit group. Bad behavior in the off-leash park is another problem. But that is something the community of dog owners should tackle. Regulations and park rules can do only so much -- simple etiquette can help reduce issues, along with dedica-tion to standard obedience training. That's the responsibility of the individual pet owner, and it's a responsibility they have regardless of whether a dog park is available to them or not. The dog park movement is beginning to take hold, however, and it's a trend I welcome.

When will it return for its final season? -- Ol-ivia F., via e-mailA: The two-hour Season Six pre-miere of "Lost" will air Tuesday, Feb. 2, on ABC. This season will be its last, as you mentioned, and will con-sist of 18 episodes. The producers and company at "Lost" are very tight-lipped when it comes to leaking plot points, but they did reveal this season's cast list: Naveen Andrews, Nestor Carbonell, Emile de Ravin, Michael Emerson, Jeff

Fahey, Matthew Fox, Jorge Garcia, Josh Holloway, Daniel Dae Kim, Yunjin Kim, Ken Leung, Evangeline Lilly, Terry O'Quinn and Zuleikha Robinson. Elizabeth Mitchell, who is now starring on ABC's latest hit, "V," is not on the official cast list for "Lost," but she has been spotted flying out to Hawaii to shoot guest stints for

the show.***Q: I read that Oprah Winfrey is launching her own net-work. What will that mean for her talk show? -- Polly T., Asheville, N.C.A: The Queen of All Media announced she is ending the 25-year run of her syndicated talk show, "The Oprah Winfrey Show," once her contract with CBS Television (the show's distributor) is up in 2011. Oprah said that prayer and careful thought led to her decision. Oprah's new network, The Oprah Winfrey Network, will begin broadcasting in 2011, replacing Discovery Health Channel and airing in 74 million homes.

25 Tips to Survive Holiday Gatherings

It doesn't take a miracle to get through the season's holiday parties with grace and good cheer. The key to stress-free fetes is to apply the same good manners that carry us through the rest of the year, says P.M. Forni, co-founder of The Civility Initiative at Johns Hopkins University and the author of "Choosing Civility: The 25 Rules of Considerate Conduct."

With office parties, family gatherings and social events in mind, Forni has made the following list and suggests we check it twice before heading out the door.

When You Are the Host: --Plan wisely. Too many houseguests will increase your stress and fatigue, preventing you from offering them your best hospitality.--Ask in advance about your guests’ dietary restrictions.--Do not overschedule your guests’ days.--Do not be afraid to claim time for yourself and your com-mitments.--When it comes to holiday gifts for your guests, make sure that no one is forgotten -- not even your friend’s new boyfriend who was a late addition to your guest list.

Check back next week for more Holiday Tips...

Tension Head-aches Are Most Common Kind

DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I went to the doctor be-cause of headaches. On examining my eyes, she discovered that my pupils don't constrict and dilate. She sent me to an

eye doctor. He said I have an Adie's pupil. Is this a disease or a syndrome? Can this be causing my headaches? He told me it was nothing. My headaches feel like there's a tight cap on my head. Please enlighten me on these things. -- G.S.

ANSWER: An Adie's (AID-ease) pupil is one that is slight-ly larger than the other pupil and it narrows very slowly when a bright light is shined on it. It's not an indication of illness and has nothing to do with your headaches. If other signs are present, like a loss of the knee-jerk reflex when the knee tendon is struck with a rubber hammer, then you call the mix Adie's syndrome. Your headaches fit the description of tension headaches, the most common kind of headache. People who have them say they feel like a tight band encircles their head or that a weight is on their head or that their head is squeezed or, as you say, that they are wearing a tight cap. Pain is felt on both sides of the head, and rarely is it throbbing pain, as it is with many other headaches. The pain lasts from half an

hour to seven days. These headaches are called tension headaches because at one time they were believed to result from contraction of the scalp muscle. Now the explanation is that innocent brain signals are misinterpreted by the brain as pain signals. If that explanation helps you, it doesn't do much for me. Start treatment of your headache without drugs. Heat packs to the neck or head might ease them. If heat doesn't do the trick, try ice. Massage sometimes work, especially neck massage. Get enough sleep, but not too much. Too much is as bad as too little. Popular tension headache medicines are aspirin and Tyle-nol (acetaminophen). If they aren't effective, tablets that combine them with caffeine can be. Caffeine enhances their painkilling properties. Ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin), naproxen (Naprosyn) and Ketoprofen (a prescription drug) have a good batting average against these headaches. Don't over-use medicine. Constant use promotes constant headaches. The headache booklet deals with the common headaches and their treatment. To order a copy, write: Dr. Donohue -- No. 901W, Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with the recipient's printed name and address. Allow four weeks for delivery. ***

Dr. Donohue regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but he will incorporate them in his column when-ever possible. Readers may write him or request an order form of available health newsletters at P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475.

Pick the Perfect Christmas TreeWhat's at the top of your Christmas list when it comes to picking the perfect tree: fra-grance, price, longevity, sturdy branches? If fragrance is important, you might choose a balsam or Fraser fir, says Dr. Kurt Pre-gitzer, a professor in Michigan Technological University's School of Forest Resources and Environmental Science. If price is an object, you'll probably have more cash left over for presents if you choose a balsam over a Fraser."The Fraser's a beautiful tree, and it commands a premium price," he said.True firs -- anything of the genus Abies -- have another advantage, says Pregitzer, who raised Christmas trees for about 10 years in the '80s and '90s. They generally retain their needles longer than the spruces and pines, "though they all hold well if you treat them properly," he says.Douglas firs, which are not true firs but look like they are, also smell nice and are famous for holding their needles practically until Valentine's Day.For dense foliage and sturdy branches, spruces are hard to beat. However, their needles are pokey compared to the firs.

"Both blue spruce and white spruce have foliage that can be hard to handle," Pregitzer says.Prickly isn't necessarily a bad thing, however. "If you have little children, they tend not to come back and handle the trees much."And pine trees? "I've had some nice scotch pines and white pines," Pregitzer says. "White pines are very nice and soft" and have an unusual bright green color. However, white pine branches can be quite pliable, so they could go limp under the weight of heavy ornaments. "If you're a collector, this might not be the tree for you," Pregitzer notes. After you pick out your Christmas tree, ask the merchant to re-bale it for you, Pregitzer advises. Baled trees are easier to transport and much less likely to knock over furniture, lamps and small children when you carry them into the house. If you've bought your tree early, store it upright outside, out of the wind and in a cool place where it won't dehydrate. Don't lay it on its side, Pregitzer warns. If it freezes, the tree might develop a flat spot. When it's time to decorate, set up your tree stand and then cut an inch or two off the bottom of the tree, place it in the stand immediately and fill the stand with water. Finally, keep the reservoir full of water, and the needles should stay on your tree and off the rug through the holiday season.

Christmas Tree Safety TipsThe snow is falling, the carolers are out and the holiday decorations are everywhere. The joy of the season should not be dampened by the risk of fire. There's nothing like a lit-up Christmas tree to make holiday nights glow. Just make sure that you don't go too far to light up the night. In recent years, nearly 600 fires per year have been started by ignition of Christmas trees in the United States, causing an average $21 million in direct property damage per year.

Here are a few fire-safety tips you should practice when decorating a Christmas tree:

1. Check your tree lights for broken or frayed wires and loose connections.2. Replace non-working light bulbs.3. Avoid decorating Christmas trees with candles.4. Make sure live Christmas trees are fresh. Don't buy trees with brown needles or dry limbs.
