Jones RegionalMedical Center
Endowment aims to support continuing educationMonticello resident, Roman Welter and his wife Rosemary, a recent patient at UnityPoint Health – Jones Regional Medical Center (JRMC), are giving back to the hospital and encouraging other community members to join them.
Inspired by the care his wife received, Roman had the idea to establish an endowment fund dedicated to JRMC staff education and development with an initial gift of $50,000 in an IRA Rollover to the JRMC Foundation.
Endowment funds have dual goals: to grow the principal and to generate income. The JRMC staff endowment fund will hold the principal in perpetuity and use the earnings each year to fund staff education needs. The initial goal is to reach $100,000, with an ultimate goal of $500,000 by December 2020.
While modern facilities and technology are necessary, the people providing care are at the heart of quality healthcare delivery in the community. Health care providers and team members at JRMC care for community members over 13,000 times each month, an average of over 425 visits a day and employ over 300 health care professionals.
“The Welters would like the community to join them in giving to this important fund to ensure Jones Regional team members always have access to the education and training needed to provide high quality care for our community,” said Sheila Tjaden, JRMC Community Development director. “They would like to see other individuals join them and consider a gift to help this education endowment grow.”
Gifts may be sent to the JRMC Foundation Office, 1795 Hwy 64 East, Anamosa, IA 52205 or at bit.ly/JRMCWaystoGive. Questions may be directed to (319) 481-6118.

FROM THE CEO Paying It ForwardVolunteering and giving to help or to improve lives dissolves differences based on race, political parties or belief systems and focuses us on doing the right thing. And doing the right thing is what we try to do every day in healthcare. So, when members of our team, community or organization are in need, we answer the call.
When the tornado hit Marshalltown, the JRMC team stepped up and gave $5,000 to our colleagues at UnityPoint Health – Marshalltown – people in a different town, doing what we do, but faced with their own disaster.
Our local food pantries reached out and let us know their shelves were close to empty. Not only did our team step up, we made it fun and collected over one ton of food to help our community, friends and neighbors who were in need.
Our team members also give to help our own patients, families, and staff. This year for the first time, we helped develop an employee giving campaign called iCare, where we provided the opportunity for staff and volunteers to give back to Jones Regional. Over 100 team members participated, and raised over $15,000.
In many ways, however, we are just mimicking the generosity displayed by so many of you, our donors and volunteers. The support Jones Regional has received over the years has been and continues to be amazing. So thank you for the example you set. We hope, in some small way, our giving pays it forward for all the blessings you have given to us.
Wishing you a blessed new year.
Yours in Health,
Eric Briesemeister, CEO

A big THANK YOU to all our wonderful volunteers! We not only have a great time at our bi-monthly prayer shawl meeting, it also serves a great need for our patients and families. Prayer shawls are given to those who need a little extra comfort. Thank you to all who donate yarn and your time to provide these wonderful gifts.
Our volunteers are a vital part of our organization. From stocking our Emergency Department, to making sure our patients get to the right place, the smiling faces you see in the blue vests around the hospital help keep the hospital and clinics running smoothly.
It’s not all work and no play! Each month, we gather for a delicious brunch, enjoy fellowship, laughs, reconnect with old friends and make new ones while learning about what is going on at JRMC and in our community.
There are many ways to volunteer, including becoming a volunteer chaplain. They help provide comfort, peace or a listening ear and are a true blessing to both our staff and patients at JRMC.

Supporting Students
JRMC Auxiliary’s Annual No Bake, Bake Sale supports education and health care throughout our community. We do this by sponsoring high school students studying a health care related field and JRMC staff members who are furthering their education with a $500 scholarship. We hope these grants highlight the importance of quality health care offered to the communities served by Jones Regional Medical Center. Congratulations to all our wonderful recipients. We wish them much success as they begin or continue their medical studies.

Community GivingThe second annual JRMC Fun Run/Walk through Camp Courageous was held on June 9, 2018. Over 70 participants, including JRMC employees and family members, enjoyed a 1.25-mile walk/run while venturing through Camp Courageous’ nature center, bowling alley, golf course and animal barn. JRMC team members were also able to earn 400 Wellness points for participating in this event.
As a thank you, donations were made to Camp Courageous by participants.
Allison Niedermann, Wellness Committee Chair/Rehab Therapy Director said, “We really enjoy hosting our JRMC Fun Run/Walk at Camp Courageous as a way to support our local communities. Camp Courageous offers so many opportunities for the families we see at our hospital, so this is a great way to support them and see what different activities they have to offer their campers.”

Donation benefits physical therapy patientsThe JRMC physical therapy staff looks for ways to track progress with their patients to determine if they have met their established goals or if additional therapy is warranted. The Karl Kurt family donated the Y Balance Test to JRMC. It’s a tool, which allows us to track strength and balance progression with athletes and pediatric patients that generally have higher levels of balance compared to our
geriatric patients.
"Our patients and staff members benefit daily from the parallel bar ramps donated by his family,” says Staci Whitson, JRMC Physical Therapist. “Prior to this donation, there was a one inch height difference between the gym floor and the floor of the parallel bars. Now we can roll patients right up an incline making the bars more accessible. Since they donated two ramps, we can now access the parallel bars from either end. This makes treatments more efficient and allows patients to enjoy the view out our front windows while completing their therapy. Thank you to the Kurt family. We think of Karl every day when we use the ramps."

Donation helps with team member trainingWhen you give to the General Fund, your gift benefits the area of greatest need at JRMC.
One item recently purchased with these funds was a simulator to offer enhanced training for Nursing and Emergency Medical Staff.
The simulator assists our nursing and EMS staff in our Advanced Cardiac Life Support classes and has other educational uses for competency testing which provides the most up-to-date education and training. A simulator is hooked up to a defibrillator and allows staff to visualize what a normal heart rhythm looks like. It also allows staff to visualize and identify irregular heart rhythms and how they should react if this would happen to one of their patients.
Guardian Angel Former patient, Jeanette Muller recognized Dr. Katherine Meyers with a Guardian Angel gift. Jeanette was in a motor vehicle accident and wanted to do something special to recognize and thank an exceptional physician, who she says, “goes above and beyond for her patients.” Congratulations, Dr. Katherine Meyers!
For more information on how you can recognize a caregiver who has given exceptional care, contact the JRMC Foundation office at [email protected] or call (319) 481-6118.

Thank you for supporting the mission of Jones Regional Medical Center.
IRA Charitable Rollover If you are 70 1/2 or older, you can benefit from an IRA charitable rollover if:
• You wish to make a significant gift without using cash or other assets.
• You do not need all or a portion of your IRA income.
• You are paying too much in taxes and are looking to reduce your income.
• You do not itemize deductions. Because a rollover gift reduces your income and taxes, you can still benefit from charitable giving without itemizing.
• You want to give over and above your normal giving. An IRA rollover gift doesn’t count toward the 50 percent annual limitation on charitable gifts.
• Contact the JRMC Foundation Office to learn more.
Matching Gifts Does your employer offer matching gifts? Consider doubling your gift to Jones Regional Medical Center Foundation with an employer matching gift.
Honor your Loved Ones Thank you for considering a gift to the JRMC Foundation with your loved one’s memorials.
Sustain Healthcare in our Community Gifts directed to the Jones Regional Medical Center Foundation will help to sustain healthcare in the area for decades to come.
