Catholic Daughters of the Americas monthly meeting will be Tuesday, December 13th at 6:00PM. Come and join us for our Pizza and Wine Party as we pack our boxes to be delivered to our military overseas.

Catholic Daughters of the Americas The Catholic Daughters of the Americas, Court Our Lady of the Holy Redeemer #2574, is pleased to announce, for the 8th consecutive year, the sponsoring of a $100 scholarship for a 2018 graduating senior from our parish, who plan to continue their education. The recipients will be determined through an essay entry. The theme for 2017 is “Finding Joy In My Life”. The deadline is changing for submissions this coming year, as we hope to submit our local winners for State and National competition, allowing our parish winners to compete for additional awards. Local Court deadline will be February 15, 2018. Our 2018 graduating seniors will be contacted by mail early January. Watch the bulletin and mail for additional details. Blessed Advent, Gerry Tomlinson, Education Chair CDA Court #2574

Treasures of the Church, Wednesday, December 6 at 7:00PM – Treasures of the Church is a ministry of evangelization of the Catholic Church. Run by Fr. Carlos Martins of the Companions of the Cross, its purpose is to give people an experience of the living God through an encounter with the relics of his saints in the form of an exposition. Each exposition begins with a multi-media presentation on the church’s use of relics that is scriptural, catechetical and devotional, leading to a renewal of the Catholic faith for many people. After the teaching, those in attendance have an opportunity to venerate the relics of some of their favorite saints. Your are encouraged to bring your articles of devotion (such as rosaries, holy cards, etc.) and pictures of ill friends/family members which you will be able to touch to the reliquaries as a means of intercession. An exposition involves some 150 relics, including those of St. Maria Goretti, St. Therese of Lisieux (the “Little flower”), St. Francis of Assisi, St Anthony of Padua, St. Thomas Aquinas, and St. Faustina Kowalska. The supreme highlight is one of the largest relics of the Church’s claim to the True Cross in the world and a piece of the Veil that, according to sanctioned tradition, is believed to have belonged to Our Lady.

National Retirement Fund for Religious – December 2nd & 3rd

Elderly Catholic sisters, brothers, and religious order priests need your help. Many served for years in Catholic schools, hospitals, and parishes—often for little to no pay. Now there is a shortage in retirement savings. Your gift to the Retirement Fund for Religious provides funding for medications, nursing care, and more. Please give to those who have given a lifetime.

HHaappppyy BBiirrtthhddaayy!! Watch over them, O Lord, as their days increase; bless and guide them wherever they may be. Strengthen them when they stand; comfort

them when discouraged or sorrowful; raise them up if they fall; and in their hearts may your peace which passes understanding abide all the days of their life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen

Our total expenditures for the year were $63,906. Administrative expenses were $2,277, utility expenses were $21,859, program equipment was $1,512 client transportation and gasoline expenses were $5,306, and medical expenses were $4,243, and the cost of groceries was $28,709. Come Lord Jesus! Turning Toward the Lord: In the rapidly-approaching Season of Advent the Church exhorts us to prepare the way for the Lord’s coming.

Liturgy is the public worship of God. Liturgy is not something we create. The Holy Sacrifice of the Mass (called in the Eastern Catholic Church the “Divine Liturgy”) is a gift given to us by God, handed down to us through Apostolic tradition. Pope Benedict XVI taught that real liturgy implies that God reveals how we can worship Him and requires some kind of “institution” not arising from our own creativity (which would just be mere self-affirmation).

The priest, in persona Christi, mediates and intercedes for the people to God. From earliest times in the Church this was done in the Mass with the congregation and the priest facing liturgical East. This “orientation” (from the Latin for East) is a simple expression of looking to Christ as the meeting place between God and man. The rising sun – historically and in Scripture symbolizing the coming of Christ – rises in the East (orient) which calls to mind the rising of the Son of God from the dead and His coming again.

The tradition of facing East in Christian liturgy goes back to the very beginnings of the Church. Such a reality of a sacred direction in prayer was practiced by the Jews who faced Jerusalem in prayer.

Most churches in the early Church were built, when possible, facing East so that priest and congregation would face in the same direction, namely, towards the East. Even those churches where it was not possible to physically face East, at least symbolically priest and people were turned together toward the Lord.

It is clear, then, that the practice of priest and people together facing in the same direction during the Mass – facing the Lord who rises in the East – has been the universal custom of the Church since earliest times. Although today we are accustomed to it, the practice of the priest facing the people (versus populum) during the Eucharistic Prayer of the Mass – which is actually addressed to our Heavenly Father – is a most recent innovation allowed as an option approximately 50 years ago. The Church never mandated this change and, in fact, the “how-to manual” for the celebration of the Mass – the General Instruction of the Roman Missal Third Typical Edition along with the Roman Missal itself – presume that priest and people together are facing the same direction for most of the Mass!
