The Education Reviews Office recently visited our school to undertake an Education Review on behalf of the Minister of Education.

Their task was to review all facets of the school organization and make a judgement as to how effective the school was.

The purpose of ERO’s external evaluations is to give parents, whānau and the wider school community assurance about the quality of education children and young people receive. ERO reports on the equity and excellence of learning outcomes for all students and for specific groups including Māori students, Pacific students and students with additional learning needs. This includes a focus on accelerating learning for students. ERO also reports on the quality and effectiveness of the school’s processes and practices for continuing and sustaining improvement.

The report focuses on four key outcomes1. How well is the school achieving equitable and excellent outcomes for all students?

If your child/ren enjoy the Performing Arts Programme, or the Sporting / PE Specialist Programme, have support from additional Teacher Aide support, and Science Room discovery this year, then you have had the advantage of the school donations that Parents have paid this year.

The government does not pay for any extra programmes that we deliver at school.

Why is it that only 54% of our parents see the importance of paying the $260 per year donation?

It is still not too late to pay

Payment can be made easily online through the Kindo Online School Shop. Please use the link

http://kindo.owairoa.school.nz/ to register if you haven’t already done so.

Mathex Winning Combination

Ms Findley took Shaayann, Kai and Haolin from Room 26 and Dwayne from Room 27. What a great performance the four boys put in. They were focused team players. From the beginning, they were in the lead, but then Cockle Bay, Willowbank and Mission Heights caught up. The boys put on a final sprint and Owairoa were lucky enough to get first place this year. “ Well done to the four boys.” Thanks to the parents who helped them practice at home and then came along to support them.

On a Tuesday 22nd October Owairoa took a very talented group of Year 6 boys and girls to the Interschool Touch Tournament which was held at Mission Heights School. The weather on the day was perfect! The sun was shining and the ground conditions were great which meant fast flowing rugby! We found ourselves in a pool with Willowbank, Wakaaranga and Beachlands Primary Schools. The three games in our pool round were very tough. We came out with 2 wins and 1 loss which placed us second in the pool round. This meant we were able to play in the semi final against our old foes Pigeon Mountain who we dispatched very easily; thanks to some wonderful tries by Asha Taumoepeau! The final was played against Howick Primary. We started off a bit shaky but found 2nd gear and came away with an 8-1 victory!

We had an amazing day and would especially like to thank the parents for their support and driving us to and from the event.Bring on the 2020 tournament!

On the 24th October, a team of 4 children went to the annual Mathex Competition at Sunnyhills Primary. The competition involved answering 25 word problems in 30 minutes; so speed and accuracy were important. 23 local schools were involvedthis year.

This year we introduced our Pataka Kai (Community Food Bank) at our school. This is placed outside our main school gate on Nelson St.

Thank you to all those who have supported the foodbank and this has allowed those in need to support themselves and their families. We certainly have a cross section of people who generously donate to the Pataka Kai, some who bring a little / take a little and some who access the items for their own survival.

This Pataka Kai is a new school initiative where we encourage caring, sharing, respect and inclusiveness in our community.

Your contribution is certainly appreciated.

The PTA once again planned for and delivered another outstanding Annual School Gala on Saturday 28th September.

The rides were exhilarating, the haunted trail scared many of the participants, the food was great, the bargains could be had in lots of stalls, and the big rides certainly gave a fun atmosphere to the Gala.

The Gala proceeds were approximately in excess of $50,000 and this money will be put to good use on a number of school resources/projects for the students.

Thank you PTA, staff, parents, students and community support for another great school and community event.

Last term’s Dinosaur Book Week certainly motivated our students into the joys of reading.

The Book Fair showcased hundreds of high interest books and the student wish lists helped them with the selection of books purchased.

An amazing number of books were purchased by families and are now in home libraries across the community.

A total of $16,285 worth of books were purchased. This amount of sales allowed the school to gain $6,514 worth of commission, which will be used to purchase books for the school library and to supplement our Junior and Senior Reading book resources.

This result was a win/win for all.

Thanks to the many parents who purchased books and to Mrs Erica Blake, our Resource Manager / Librarian for co-ordinating the Book Fair and the large number of parents who supported the Fair as Sales Assistants.

Are Grandparents getting younger or is it because I am getting older? Our recent Grandparents afternoon was once again a time where our students took pride in sharing their work/school life with their Grandparents and Grandfriends.

The showcase concert got the afternoon off to a good start and the class visits were a great opportunity for Grandparents / Grandchildren to work together and for the Grandparents to share artifacts from a bygone era, to the class. The afternoon confirmed our love and respect for Grandparents and highlighted the importance they have in our day-to-day life.

Pasifica Fono

What a delight it was to meet with our Pacific Island Parents and Students at our Pasifica Fono held on Thursday 31st October.

We all enjoyed networking with each other, sharing our aspirations and having the joy of watching several student dance and singing performances. We then enjoyed some refreshments at the conclusion of the meeting and conversed with our special guests of the evening.

Thank you to the families who came to support this event.
