God has called us to be people of excellence with integrity. Jesus said, “You are the salt of theearth; but if the salt loses its flavor, how shall it be seasoned? It is then good for nothing but to bethrown out and trampled underfoot by men. You are the light of the world. A city that is set on ahill cannot be hidden. People of excellence andintegrity are the salt and light of theworld. They go the extra mile. Theykeep their word, their promises, pledges and commitments. They givetheir employers’ their money’s worthand more. They live with enthusiasm. They are willing to obey and to serve. When others see their excellence, they will glorify the Father in heavenand say that the God they serve is atruly wonderful God!

Church Summit

Enthusiastic LeadershipBishop Dr. Dag Heward-Mills, the Senior

Pastor of Lighthouse Cathedral in Accra, Ghana, challenged the leaders who attended the CalvaryChurch Summit at the Tropicana Golf & CountryResort on 12 and 13 May 2006, to find out howGod wants His work done.

As ministers of God, we must bepassionate and in Psalms 104:4, wesee that God makes His ministers“flames of fire.”

The message of the Church mustnot be limited to the blessings of God.Bishop Dag strongly advocated that itmust include the message of sacrifice. There must be moreteaching on the cross ofJesus Christ and the needto take up the cross andfollow Him. Paul says, “Forthe message of the crossis foolishness to thosewho are perishing but tous who are being saved itis the power of God” (1Corinthians 1:18).

Sacrifice releases power. It makespeople follow us. It makes them believebecause there is power in the Blood.Sacrifice makes people take usseriously and it induces commitment.

The master key to fruitfulness issacrifice. Jesus Himself said, “The hourhas come that the Son of Man shouldbe glorified. Most assuredly, I say toyou, unless a grain of wheat falls intothe ground and dies, it remains alone;but if it dies, it produces much grain”(John 12:23-24). “The missingingredient,” said Bishop Dag, “is notmore knowledge but ‘death’!”

There is a price to be paid when wepush for new frontiers. Realadvancement comes with sacrifice.Satan makes one who sacrifices seemto be an extremist. The Antichrist is

against daily sacrifices (Daniel11:31). Judas was against thesacrifice made by the womanwho broke the alabaster jar toanoint Jesus with expensiveperfume. “Nice” people can

also speak against sacrifice. Peter didnot want Jesus to go to Jerusalem andsuffer and be killed. Jesus recognisedSatan’s influence and rebuked him.

We must however beware ofmaking substitute sacrifices for causesthat are not of God. How true that manyof us do make sacrifices but for thingsthat do not mean anything to God.

The Church Summit continued atCalvary Church Damansara Heights at7pm where those who regularly comefor the Friday School of ChristianGrowth classes and for the PrayerMeeting joined in. Bishop Dagexpanded on his earliermessages. While God is makingus into flames of fire, zealouslyworking for Him, He wants us tobe fruitful and not go to heavenbarren (1 Peter 1:8-9). We must openour eyes and not be short-sighted and

not forget there are others who stillneed to be saved.

On Saturday, back again at theTropicana Golf & Country Resort, BishopDag Heward-Mills spoke on the need toserve God with feelings of compassion.Jesus Himself was moved withcompassion for the multitudes (Matthew9:36). God places holy desires within usand we must respond to God and notquench these desires to live for andserve Him.

Why did God save us? Whatpleases God? If Jesus came to KualaLumpur for three days, what would Hedo first? What did He do when He wason earth? These were some of thequestions that Bishop Dag posed to us.The answers will tell us what we need tobe doing too–preaching, teaching andbringing healing to the many who haveyet to know Jesus Christ as Saviour andLord. The messages left the leaderswith a sense of urgency to go out andput into action all that we had receivedthe past two days.

The leaders also benefited fromtwo video workshops: “The Leader’sFinest Hour” presented by Bill Hybels, founding and Senior Pastor of Willow

Creek Community Church and“Exceptional Leadership at Every Level”by T.D. Jakes Senior. Bill Hybelschallenged leaders to lead with alldiligence and warned that difficultchallenges are inevitable in leadership.During these trying times that comewith growth, leaders must wear differenthats or in his words, “uniforms”. Oneclear message that came across wasthat the local church is the hope of theworld. It is God’s means to renewbroken hearts and to reconcile the worldto God.

Bishop T.D. Jakes Senior , SeniorPastor of The Potter’s House in Texas, challenged his church that grew from 50families to more than 28,000 members

in about seven years, to reach out sothat there would be “No more emptyseats”. Using Moses as an example,Bishop Jakes challenged leaders to takeresponsibility, to cease complaining andto make changes, beginning withthemselves. We cannot fight today’schallenges with yesterday’s weapons. With every new level, comes new devils! We must look for Joshuas, Aarons andHurs. Some are called to be aggressivein battle like Joshua while there are

those who need to be like Aaron andHur, undergirding the leader, Moses.

Senior Pastor Prince Guneratnamconcluded the Summit calling theleaders to rise up and disciple newleaders to reach out to the community. Itwill amaze us how God can use us. Arewe ready to move to a new level ofgrowth? God is speaking to us: “No moreempty seats!” Senior Pastor said heneeds more Joshuas, Aarons and Hursso that Calvary Church can become theFountain Head Church that God hascalled us to be. We will see God’samazing work when we willingly andobediently serve the Lord withenthusiasm!

On Sunday, 14 May 2006, Calvary Church honoured all the mothers who attended our morningWorship Services at all our Church locations. Senior Pastor Prince Guneratnam recognised the importantrole of mothers and prayed for them. They also received a gift from the Church.

Calvary Church celebrates Mother’s Day

Our speaker, First Lady (as she isknown in her church, LighthouseCathedral in Accra, Ghana) AdelaideHeward-Mills, pointed out that womenbecome mothers for various reasons–for example, Hagar, because Sarah wasconcerned about fulfilling God’s promiseto Abraham and Naomi, by adoption ofRuth who chose to follow her and her God.

God makes each child different, even if they are identical twins. God hasplans for every child and SisterAdelaide encouraged parents torest in what He has in store forthem. During her pregnancy,Rebekah, the mother of Esauand Jacob heard from the Lordthat the youngerchild will serve theolder. (Genesis

25:23). When the time came for Isaac tobless his first-born, Esau, before hedied, Rebekah resorted to deceptionand manipulation to help God fulfil Hisplan (Genesis 27:5-17)! In her love forand desire to help her son, Jacob, whomshe was partial to, she ran ahead of Godand sadly, did not live to enjoy the

results of God’s will.God can work in

even the most difficultchild. Sister Adelaide

exhorted parents not togive up on their

children. God workedin Jacob’s life– Hemet him in Bethel;

let him be deceived on his weddingnight; wrestled with him and gave him anew name, Israel, meaning Prince withGod. The God who worked in Jacob andchanged a deceiver into a prince, canalso work in your child.

Hebrews 4:9 says, “There remainstherefore a rest for the people of God”.Sister Adelaide concluded by exhortingparents to be diligent to enter into God’srest and to meditate on His Word, walkby faith and trust in His promises. God’splan is always better. Their responsibilityis to lift their children before God andbe good stewards to nurture them in theLord.

The ladies at the Tuesday Ladies’ Worship Service celebrated Mother’s Day on 16 May 2006. Thespeaker, Pam Lee, in accordance with the theme that day, “Rise With Your Talents”, helped the ladies recognise that everybeliever has been given a special gift by God (Ephesians 4:7). She observed that people often think they do not have a gift justbecause it is not a “performance” gift.

Referring to 1 Corinthians 12, shepointed out that just as there aredifferent parts to a body and there aredifferent gifts. And just as every part ofthe body is important, every gift isimportant. Pam suggested the way toidentify our gifts is to find out what wedo best and very naturally! For example,an ear listens and a nose smells.Similarly, if you find that you smile a lot

and love making people feelcomfortable, it is likely that you have thegift of hospitality.

The parts of a human bodyfunction for the sake of the body’s well-being. She urged the ladies tocontribute and commit their gifts for thegood of the body of Christ so that theLord will be glorified. They in turn willfeel a sense of belonging to the body

that they serve. She also cautioned thatgifts that are not used will be like partsof a body that do not remain attached tothe body and they will die a spiritual andnatural death respectively.

The ladies were greatly blessed bythe message and were challenged to usetheir gifts and talents for the Lord. Afterthe Service, they enjoyed fellowship overfood served at the Church foyer.

The fellowship organised by the Bahasa Malaysia Life Groups, aimedto reaffirm the role of mothers as well as to reinforce a sense of significance in the lives of these ladies.

Assistant Pastor Karen Seah sharedan inspiring message in BahasaMalaysia on how to live a purpose-drivenlife, and the importance of leaving aspiritual legacy. The ladies werereminded that they ought to always givetheir utmost for His highest in allaspects of their lives. Out of the 53

people who came, seven rededicatedtheir lives whilst two others acceptedJesus as their Lord and Saviour.

To reinforce the message, BettyHan then gave a demonstration on howto care for a small potted plant. Usingthe analogy of a plant, the participantswere reminded that their labour, when

done as unto the Lord will always yieldresults. Our responsibility is to faithfullydo the will of God.

Everyone left the fellowshiprefreshed, appreciated and determinedto give their best to God and be ablessing to others. Puji Tuhan!

Healing and Miracle Service

Jesus heals and touches lives!

There was a sense of expectation as Calvarites converged at Calvary ChurchDamansara Heights for the Healing and Miracle Service at 5pm on 14 May2006. They took the opportunity to bring along their family members andfriends to meet Jesus who heals and touches lives.

They were notdisappointed becauseBishop Dr. Dag Heward-Millsintroduced kind, strong yetgentle, saving and redeemingJesus who heals, teachesand preaches, to us. Hebrought us to Malachi, thelast book of the OldTestament which gives us apicture of Jesus Christengaged in apowerful ministryof healing. Inchapter 4 andverse 2, we readthat the “Sun ofRighteousnessshall rise withhealing in Hiswings.”

When we aresick, we all wanta specialist to attend to us.Jesus is a specialist in everyarea! Why do we not go toOne with healing in Hiswings? Jesus heals thosewith gynaecologicalproblems, with mentalproblems, the blind, thosewith broken hearts and theparalysed. He can even canraise the dead, be it thephysically dead or situationsthat have died.

We often want to see amiracle happen immediately. But Bishop Dag said thatGod could start a miraclethat evening but only in timecan we see the change. Heencouraged us to keepconfessing Jesus andtrusting in His healing. Wemust not stop praying as

prayer is a blessingwhether or not we arehealed!

That evening, aswe heard the Word, faith in our Lord Jesusarose in our hearts.Bishop Dag askedthose who wanted Godto heal them and totouch them in any specificarea, to place their hands onthe parts that neededhealing or on their hearts. Allover the sanctuary, individuals reached out infaith.

At the end of theService, many came out totestify that the Lord hadhealed them and manyliterally felt the Lord’s touchin the form of warmth and

tingling sensations. Newhope filled those with brokenhearts. There was also greatjoy over those who receivedJesus Christ as their Saviourand Lord.

The sense ofexpectation continued as weleft the sanctuary becauseJesus will continue andcomplete that which Hebegan that evening. All gloryto God!

The Bite Size Commitment 2 was launched on 21 May 2006. We thank God for every partner whogave through the Bite Size Commitment 1 that was launched in March 2005, towards the building of theCalvary Convention Centre!

Via video at all the Churchlocations, Deacon for Building andFinancial Management/ChurchBusiness, Han Joke Kwang, reminded ushow it is possible to achieve our targetof RM 10 million, if we joined our handsto give systematically and faithfully, towards the building fund. If we all doour part, it is possible to meet thetarget. Every bite counts!

He said that if each of us increasedour Bite Size 1 commitment by 1.5

times, we can reach our target. Sacrificereleases God’s power. This is a keyprinciple shared by Bishop Dag Heward-Mills with the Church leadership.

After prayer, the adultcongregations and the children at the

Carpenter’s Workshop classes at all theChurch locations made pledges to giveto the Lord as partners to fulfil His callto us to be a Fountain Head Church toreach Kuala Lumpur and beyond forJesus Christ.

KecemerlanganKecemerlangandengan Ketulusandengan Ketulusan

“Orang-orang yangberkecemerlangan danberketulusanmerupakan garam dancahaya dunia.”

Kitab Injil memanggil kita menjadipembina mahir kehidupan.

Umat manusiaperlu mentaati Tuhan. Apabila manusiahilang rasa takut akan Tuhan, dia akanmenjadi atau bertindak bagaikanbinatang kerana tiada had untuknya.Yesus mengajar kita supaya mentaatiTuhan.

Tuhanbersabda, “Cukuplah kasih karuniaKubagimu, sebab justru dalamkelemahanlah kuasaKu menjadisempurna” (2 Korintus 12:9).

Calvary Family Camp

What was in the minds of the campers who headed to Copthorne Orchid and Crown Jewel Hotels for our Family Camp in Penang? Food–spiritualand definitely the famed Penang cuisine–fun and fellowship! We were expecting to to be blessed during these four days from 5 to 8 June 2006.

Senior Pastor Prince Guneratnam, atthe keynote session, zeroed in on threedestructive situations that can kill ourenthusiasm, namely disappointment, emotional hurt and bitterness. It is thesecommon, ‘little’ things that destroy us andwe need to deal with them by confessingthem to the Lord and asking Him forforgiveness. It was a great way to begincamp, as it prepared our hearts to bereceptive to the Lord.

Amidst much laughter, CampSpeaker, Rev. Dikran Salbashian, fromJordan, brought home many great truths

from the Word. He said it is important thatwe see God as a loving Father becausethis affects our thoughts of ourselves andour actions. Our God is also a covenant-keeping God who will continually bless usuntil we stop Him with our sins. We mustexpect our faith to face examinations:trials of difficulties, persecutions, thesilence of God, apparent rejection by Godand the trial of waiting for God to act.

Rev. Dikran said that grumbling is agreat killer of enthusiasm. We mustcounter this with thanksgiving, positivethoughts, prayer and forgiveness. We also

cannot live enthusiastically unless wehave a purpose in life. Senior Pastorconcluded by challenging us to faithfullymind the business that God gave each ofus so that we can fulfil what God haspurposed for Calvary Church.

The men, women and youth hadseparate workshops. Rev. Dikranchallenged the men to seek God’s will sothat they can make puposeful choicesand decisions to fulfill His will. AssociatePastor Steven Kum encouraged the mento emulate three qualities of Nehemiahwhich helped him fulfil God’s calling: a

Guneratnam encouraged them to throwoff everything that hinders their livingenthusiastically for the Lord.

It was a great camp! We thank God

reverence for God, a relationship with Godand men and a solid reputation.

Sister Ani Salbashian’s testimony ofhow God has used her to win souls forHim greatly challenged the women totrust and obey God to do the samethrough them. Senior Associate PastorPetrina Guneratnam challenged thewomen to live enthusiastically using theirGod-given gifts.

Assistant Pastor David Seahchallenged the youth to allow God to beLord of every “room” in their lives so thatthey can live victoriously. And Jim

Chinese Camp

More than 52 worshippersfrom our Chinese–speakingcongregation and theirloved ones attended thisyear’s Chinese FamilyCamp held in Penang.

Senior Pastor PrinceGuneratnam inspired us toovercome the disappointments inlife, emotional hurts andbitterness so that we can live withenthusiasm.

Rev. Lawrence Yap, from CharisChristian Center, shared on how we canovercome the Goliath in our lives bybelieving that God is real, that He isfaithful and by following in His ways. Healso touched on the life of Moses onhow we can rise up and serve Godenthusiastically by knowing who we are

in God’s eyes. By depending on His graceand power we can be bold and strong tolet God use us. He also encouraged usthat Jesus, our good, great and chiefShepherd will empower us to live for Himwhile we await His return.

By living enthusiastically for God, wecan become a very powerful witness at

home and in the community where welive. When we begin to sow seeds ofgood works with love and compassion,we can also expect to reap a goodharvest in due time.

The simple yet very powerfulmessages have brought wonderfulrenewal to our spiritual life. Manycampers responded and sought theLord at the altar after each session.Praise the Lord for the 12 whoreceived the baptism of the Holy Spirit. We had good times of fellowship overmeals and the recreational activitiesgreatly enhanced the bonding we havewith one another.

Life Group (LG) Ministry

Romans 12: 5 tells us that Christ made us one body, connected to each other. What better way toexperience and develop this connection than in the Life Group. Here are some testimonies of severalLG members who have experienced the blessings of belonging to a LG:

Connected to each other through LGs

Hey Young People!!!

Youth

Watch out for anotherexplosive and extraordinary

night of worship.

JANET TAN testifies:“After losing my only son, my life was shattered. There were no more tears, just emptiness

and a broken heart, but God’s divine ray of sunshine shone upon me and led me to a LG. Theyaccepted me with open arms and helped me make friends with Christians whom I laterbecame close to and with whom I shared my personal struggles. They have become my supportteam and impacted my life and the lives of those around me. It has been such a blessing to meto be able to broaden my horizon and meet other Christian women who can come together towitness and testify of God’s grace, power and love. In the LG, I have found God’s strength anddivine mercy to carry me through my journey of faith. My LG is a loving group where our LordJesus is always present.”

AGNES YOON says:“LG is a ministry that caters to every believer who desires to be nurtured spiritually.

Spiritual growth is neither instant nor automatic and there are no short-cuts to maturity. Sincejoining the LG from its inception, I have been truly blessed. We study the Word of God which islike a daily bread for my soul. My faith is also strengthened by faith-inspiring testimonies. Wepray for one another’s needs. Sometime last year, my daughter had contracted a virus thatdoctors initially could not diagnose. For three months, she was in and out of hospital and I hadto take no-pay leave for two months. Praise the Lord that through persistent prayers of my LGLeader and members, my daughter was completely healed. When there is an urgent prayerrequest from anyone in the LG, my leader will immediately inform the rest of the members anda prayer chain will be formed to uphold the person in need.”

ESTHER VON LINDEINER recalls:“The whole idea of being part of a LG was alien to me three years ago. I was sceptical.

However, bearing my heart open and willing to learn, I have indeed been blessed. I have learntto pray for others and found direction in life. It is obvious to me now that it is necessary to stayin a group to be always reminded of God’s goodness and mercy. The testimonies shared haverevealed the awesome power of God time and time again. Life is all about a passionaterelationship with God as the centre of my life. This is reiterated each time at the TuesdayLadies’ Worship Service and in my LG. I have been blessed in many ways by God’s favour andfavour with authorities. In what everyone would attest to be impossible, I have experiencedGod’s divine intervention. I have so much to be grateful for and I praise God for Hisfaithfulness.”

Come join a LGand be blessed !

From front page

Weapons of WarfareThe Bible calls us master

builders of our life’s work. TheApostle Paul said, “According to thegrace of God which was given to me,as a wise master builder I have laidthe foundation, and another buildson it. But let each one take heedhow he builds on it. For no otherfoundation can anyone lay than thatwhich is laid, which is Jesus Christ. Now if anyone builds on thisfoundation with gold, silver, preciousstones, wood, hay, straw, each one’swork will become clear; for the Daywill declare it, because it will berevealed by fire; and the fire will testeach one’s work, of what sort it is. Ifanyone’s work which he has built onit endures, he will receive a reward. If anyone’s work is burned, he willsuffer loss; but he himself will besaved, yet so as through fire” (1Corinthians 3:10-15).

There are five things to notefrom Paul’s warning: First, thefoundation that you are building onis Jesus Christ. Second, what youuse to build will either endure andbring you reward or be destroyedand bring you loss when Jesuscomes. Third, the materials you usewill be tested and revealed by fire.Fourth, that which is built with gold, silver and precious stones willendure but that which is built withwood, hay and straw will be burned. Finally, the one using buildingmaterials that endure, will berewarded. Are you building with theright materials to be the salt andlight so that the Father is glorifedwhen people see your good works?

In order to be wise masterbuilders with integrity, we mustserve to please God and not men.Paul teaches us to serve, “Not witheyeservice, as men-pleasers, but asbondservants of Christ, doing thewill of God from the heart”(Ephesians 6:6). He also says,“Bondservants, obey in all thingsyour masters according to the flesh, not with eyeservice, as men-pleasers, but in sincerity of heart, fearing God” (Colossians 3:22). It isGod that calls you to serve and youneed to serve with excellence andwith integrity because God iswatching and not because your

pastor or your employer or yourparents are watching you. But whydo people want to serve and pleaseman rather than God? The Biblegives us the answer: “For they lovedthe praise of men more than thepraise of God” (John12:43).

Serve to please God becauseHe will reward an excellent workerwith integrity. “Knowing that fromthe Lord you will receive the rewardof the inheritance; for you serve theLord Christ” (Colossians 3:24). ThePsalmist exclaims, “Oh, how great isYour goodness, which You have laidup for those who fear You, whichYou have prepared for those whotrust in You in the presence of thesons of men!” (Psalm 31:19). Servewith excellence and integritybecause your labour is not in vain!Paul says, “Therefore, my belovedbrethren, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work ofthe Lord, knowing that your labor isnot in vain in the Lord” (1Corinthians 15:58).

How do we know when we lackintegrity and are not performing withexcellence in our lives? When wecheat and steal—being lazy andindifferent; when we tell lies—beingirresponsible and uncommitted;when we are careless—beingcareless and compromising; whenwe are selfish—being unproductiveand wasteful and when we areunfair—being prejudiced and withoutcompassion.

In order to be wise masterbuilders and excellent workers, wemust also serve with the fear ofGod. “Bondservants, obey in allthings your masters according tothe flesh, not with eyeservice, asmen-pleasers, but in sincerity ofheart, fearing God” (Colossians3:22). People need to be God-

fearing. When man loses the fear ofGod, he becomes an animal asthere is nothing to hold him back.Jesus teaches us to fear God. Hesays, “My friends, do not be afraidof those who kill the body, and afterthat have no more that they can do.But I will show you whom youshould fear: Fear Him who, after Hehas killed, has power to cast intohell; yes, I say to you, fear Him!”(Luke 12:4-5). Man can only destroyyour body but God can also destroyyour soul. Serve and fear Godbecause He is greater and mightierthan men. His judgment is moresevere than any man’s.

God loves and cares for you.Jesus said, “Are not five sparrowssold for two copper coins? And notone of them is forgotten beforeGod. But the very hairs of your headare all numbered. Do not feartherefore; you are of more valuethan many sparrows” (Luke 12:6). IfGod cares for sparrows that can bebought so cheaply, how much morevaluable you are to Him. God is ourprovider and security. The ApostlePeter says, “Casting all your careupon Him, for He cares for you” (1Peter 5:7). He is a God who haspower to turn difficult and negativesituations—conflicts andpersecutions for your benefit. Paulsays, “And we know that all thingswork together for good to thosewho love God, to those who are thecalled according to His purpose”(Romans 8:28) and “For our lightaffliction, which is but for amoment, is working for us a farmore exceeding and eternal weightof glory” (2 Corinthians 4:17). Godsays, “My grace is sufficient for you,for My strength is made perfect inweakness” (2 Corinthians 12:9).

God is faithful but you have tomake a choice. Will you serve Himwith excellence and integrity, toplease Him and not man? Will youfear Him? Will you, like Joshua andhis household declare, “But as forme and my house, we will serve theLORD” (Joshua 24:15)?

All Bible quotations are from theNew King James Version.

Vision becomes a reality! For the 60 intercessors who made the trip to Calvaryland on 6 May 2006, it was more than just a

journey to its location in Sungai Pelek. It was a journey of faith that they, as part of the Calvary family, hadtaken since the vision was birthed in the heart of our Senior Pastor Prince Guneratnam a few years ago.

Now that the vision hasbecome a reality, it wasindeed a cause for muchrejoicing and thanksgiving.Standing on Calvarylanditself brought about a senseof awe and wonder becauseGod has answered ourprayers in ways beyond ourimagination!

There was muchexcitement as AssistantPastor Shereen Wong, thePastor in charge ofCalvaryland, shared aboutthe upcoming plans to set uphomes for the children, theelderly and a living skillsprogramme for youth withlearning disabilities. Withthese mental pictures ofwhat Calvaryland would be,the intercessors went for atour cum prayer walk withinthe newly constructedbuildings.

Brief as it was, the tripwas a memorable one—memorable because it was areminder to us of theunfailing promise of God’sWord in 1 John 5:14 “that ifwe ask anything according tohis will, he hears us.” Andabove all, significantbecause deep within thehearts of many, there was aninner witness that our Godwho has brought Calvarylandto fruition is more than

capable ofbringing tofulfilment ourplans for theCalvary Convention Centre. What God has called Hispeople to do, He will providethe resources needed toaccomplish the task. What ablessed assurance!
