Congratulations to all our 2018 winners - you really have set the bar high and given the rest of us a lot to aspire to! To those who didn’t take out awards on the night - you know how much you are achieving, and how proud your community is of you. Every one of us play important parts in this amazing team - one which every day I feel blessed to be a part of. Thank you to everyone who came to enjoy our beautiful event. There was so much going on in Launceston on March 1 st and we were very appreciative of all the well-wishes sent by our supporters who couldn’t be with us on the night. So you’d think an awards night would be enough for one weekend - not at New Horizons! A mere 48 hours later we backed up for our Carol Tanner Memorial Swim Carnival at Scottsdale and were rewarded with a gorgeous (and action- packed) day. Phew. It’s such a busy time of the year - we’re now speeding towards the Wilson Homes Western Tiers Cycle Challenge on Sunday the 24 th March. I hope to see as many of you on wheels as possible! So what else is happening in March? We have a major meeting with the NDIS project team booked to discuss our business plans moving forward, once our government funding ceases in June this year. As you can imagine, our management and admin team are under quite a bit of pressure as we face uncertain times - but we are feeling positive. The Board, staff and interested members held our second planning session in early February with Leigh and Jacynta from Communities, Sport and Recreation to finalise our new Strategic Plan. We look forward to sharing this with you all very soon. Plus, Edwina and I attended a national fundraising conference last week, which has given us some fresh ideas to grow our revenue streams. Wishing you all a great month of Cycle Training! Warm wishes, Belinda Kitto CEO NHT OFFICE HOURS Weekdays 10 am – 3 pm Admin Staff hours Mon & Thur Ruth 9.30 am – 3 pm Tues Saskia 9.30 am – 5 pm Wed & Fri Lucy 9.30 am – 3 pm Please contact the office if you need to make appointment times outside of these hours.

New Members

New Horizons Club welcomes and encourages new members. This month’s applicants are – MJ Parbs, Tyson Parbs, Samuel McKibben, Craig Hansen, Emma Breen, Hayley Wigg, Alexander Kassay, Sarah Rose Holt and Nancyann Walters (Volunteer). If any member having just cause why any of the above mentioned applicants should not be inducted into the club, they must advise the Public Officer (Belinda Kitto) in writing no later than FRIDAY 15/03/2019. Mail can be directed to New Horizons Tas, PO BOX 49 Mowbray 7248 or dropped in. Without any objections, these members will be inducted into the club and advised accordingly.

Our February Dinner Club was held at Levee at the Seaport. Mel, Dean, Elly, Debbie, Nicole, Donna, Carolina, Justin and Saskia had a lovely dinner there looking out over the yachts and the river. Justin and Dean are laughing over Justin’s two desserts – he only ordered one bowl with 2 types of ice cream!

Our next dinner will be on Thursday 21 March (not on 4th April as planned earlier) at the Watergarden, Country Club Casino at 6.00pm. Please call the office on 6326 3344 to reply.

Inner Wheel Function In February Inner Wheel Club of Kings Meadows held their annual Cocktail Party in the Garden of Franklin House. Funds raised are being donated to New Horizons – such a generous gesture by this fantastic organisation. Belinda spoke on the Club at the event.

…………………………………………………………………………………………… Police Charity Trust Donation It was a morning of celebration and gratitude as we welcomed Richard Douglas of the Tasmania Police Charity Trust to Tuesday Craft. Richard presented New Horizons with a cheque for $22,000, raised by the riders of the 2018 Police Charity Trust Ride (including our very own Steve Ockerby and Alan Dengate). Our dear friend Robyn Ockerby also played a huge part in fundraising - thank you to them all from the bottom of our hearts! As New Horizons (and many other community organisations) head in to a period of uncertainty -- with government funding ceasing in June 2019, with the full rollout of the NDIS-- the significance of this donation cannot be understated. Thanks so very much Richard, Steve, Dingo and your fellow cyclists - we are very, very grateful for your mammoth efforts.

Our Song and Dance group are enjoying their new

space at Melissa Wimmer’s studio. Currently it is Tap

Class – Dana taps on the tambourine as the dancers

tap to the beat!

New Horizons in the South We are excited that New Horizons’ expansion to the south of the state will soon have a regular home for members and interested participants to join our club! In a partnership with C-Block we will be utilising their indoor sports venue in Federal St each Wednesday evening. This will provide us with a chance to run a range of sports and activities each week and create social links with our Southern members and families/volunteers to come together and build the profile and awareness of our club! We would love to see our Southern members come along as often as possible and hope this regular timeslot will provide the southern community with a great opportunity to gain regular after-hours access to inclusive sport and recreation activities. A full monthly schedule of activities will be released soon! Sessions will start from Wednesday 20th March (4pm - 6pm) at 81- 83 Federal St, North Hobart and continuing weekly. To register, contact Stu on 0428 482 967 or [email protected] Cheers from Stu (Stuart Schultz Southern Sport & Recretion Coordinator)

Celebrating 2018 - Awards Night Last Friday night the Tailrace Centre was abuzz with celebration of the amazing achievements of our dynamic members. It was another truly unforgettable event. Thank you so much to all who joined us and have sore feet from the dancing!

Special thanks to our guest award presenter Bridget Archer (representing Senator Abetz) and video presenters Mayor Albert van Zetten, Roger Jaensch MP, Ross Hart MP and Rosemary Armitage MLC. Certificates were also presented for 20 year and 30 year memberships of New Horizons – a wonderful celebration of the dedication shown by so many in the fine history of this proud community organisation.

Congratulations to our Award recipients and indeed to everyone who was a part of 2018!
