Dear Forest Hills Family, Last month was short due to Spring Break; however, I would like to thank all of you who went online and filled out the parent survey. The feedback provided from the survey allows the school to continuously improve. This month, we begin taking the Florida Standards Assessment (FSA).Our teachers in grades 3, 4, and 5 have diligently been working to ensure students are thoroughly prepared and clarifying all questions relating to the assessments. In May, students will continue with the remainder of their FSA Assessments. We wish them well! This month, we have a few happenings around our campus such as spring pictures, Muffins with Moms, Garden Day, and Parent Night (topic: Science). Please notice the dates and times of these events at the top of page 2 to help you plan ahead. I will also send reminders relating to these events. Teachers have been conferencing with students and parents on goals to be met by the end of the school year. If you have not had your second conference this year, please inquire with the teacher and be sure to get on the calendar as it is the fourth quarter. Now is the time to have conversations on the academic levels your student is working on for each subject, and how you can assist at home to strengthen their skill set. Last but not least, I want to wish everyone a great month of April, filled with kindness and helping others, as we approach the finish line. Thanks for all you do for our children! Educationally Yours, Derrick L. Huff, Ed.S. Assistant Principal
Dear Parents,
We are in the home stretch, and there is much to
be accomplished before the school year ends. We
have end of year assessments, and it is time for
all of our awesome students to put their best feet
forward. It is an exciting time in which our kids
will be able to celebrate their academic growth.
In addition, it is a good time to reflect on
kindness. Even though our February Random Acts
of Kindness have ended, we should continue to
work together to promote kind words and
positive reactions to emotions. Let’s make this a
kind and caring Forest Hills Community.
Thank You For Being You!
Your Partnership Is Truly Appreciated!
Respectfully,
Principal B. Rothman, Ed.S.

Do You Shoparoo? Do you go shopping? Do you go out to eat? If so, all you have to do is take a picture of your receipt and upload it onto Shoparoo. Our school will get points that will lead to money coming straight to the school. What do we do with it? We use the funds to purchase incentives for students. This is a FREE way to help the school. Please get the Shoparoo app on your phone and start today.
Box Tops Teachers collect these Box Tops. The school redeems these every quarter and receives some money back. Money received is used for student incentives such as for cafeteria rewards and iReady acknowledgements. Please help.

Tardies and Attendance Matters Preparing for the future begins now. Good work habits begin with good practice which begins now. Please help your child by having him/her come to school on time and daily. K-5 teachers pick up their students from the designated areas at 7:45 a.m. and bring them into the classrooms. Instruction promptly begins at 7:50. Arriving late puts your child at a disadvantage. It also disrupts the children that did come to school on time. In regards to safety, children who are late are not escorted by their classroom teacher to his/her classroom. Please come to school on time. Here are a few tips...
• Lay out your child’s uniform and shoes the night before.
• Pack up your child’s backpack and place it in a “ready to go” location.
• Pack your child’s lunch or snacks. If prepping lunch is cumbersome, consider our café.
• Get a good night’s sleep.
• Set the alarm to a time that provides your child ample time to get ready.
• Leave with ample time to arrive on time.
Students who have excessive absences will be required to bring a doctor’s note regardless of whether or not the absences were excused. A pattern of non-attendance effects student learning. A Message from the Guidance Counselor Dear Parents of 3rd, 4th and 5th grade students, Third grade parents, your child will be taking the FSA -ELA Reading portion on Tuesday April 2nd and Wednesday April 3rd 2019. The ELA is administered in a 80 minute 2 day session period. Fourth and fifth grade parents, your child will be taking the FSA-ELA Writing component on Tuesday, April 2nd . The Writing Test is administered in a 120-minute session in which students write an essay in response to a prompt. Please mark your calendar and make sure your child is in attendance. Please ensure that your child eats a well-balanced breakfast and arrives on time!!!! Please review the following policies with your student before testing: ■ Electronic Devices—If your student is found with ANY electronic devices, including but not limited to, cell phones and smart phones, at any time during testing OR during breaks, his or her test will be invalidated, which means it will not be scored. The best practice is for students to leave devices at home on the day of testing. ■ Testing Rules Acknowledgment— Testing includes a Testing Rules Acknowledgment that reads, “I understand the testing rules that were just read to me. If I do not follow these rules, my test score may be invalidated.” Prior to testing, test administrators will read the rules to students, and students must acknowledge that they understand the testing rules by signing their names under the statement. ■ Leaving Campus—If your student leaves campus before completing the test (for an appointment, illness, etc.), he or she WILL NOT be allowed to complete the test. Once a child is in the testing area, we will not be able to disrupt the testing environment to pull your child out of the area. Please refrain from scheduling appointments during this time.
Assessment and Reflection
Assessment and reflection are two parts of education that both have an important function. Assessment helps us to determine what students have learned, and reflection provides the opportunity for students to think about how it applies to their own lives.
As we/you work with your child, let's remember to honor their pasts through listening and understanding. Let's work with him/her in the present to bring out their best today, and let's help him/her reflect on current experiences to integrate learning in ways that will last a lifetime.
Our kids have worked hard this school year and continue to grow each and every day.
Mrs. Aiello, School Guidance Counselor Thank you for supporting your student as he or she prepares for the test. Sincerely, Mrs. Aiello Guidance Counselor

Planeteers
During the month of March students in STEM have been learning a lot. • Kindergarten students have been learning all about
gravity.
• First grade students have been learning about the
various ways things move: push, pull, zig-zag, etc.
• Second grade students have been learning about air and
constructing houses out of various materials to survive a
simulated wind storm.
• Third grade, students have been learning how to classify
plants by their characteristics.
• Fourth grade students have been learning about animal
adaptations.
• Fifth grade, students have been learning about the rock
cycle.
During the month of March, our Planeteers worked hard maintaining our garden by weeding and watering the plants. In addition, we planted a few more crops and had the opportunity to observe a few seeds begin to germinate.
During the month of March, students in aftercare had a chance to try their hand at robotics. They are learning how to drive the different robots and pick up the hubs. Pretty soon recruitment for robotics will start for the 2019-2020 school year!
Pre-K Hooray for Pre-K! Our little friends continue to prepare for next school year. Our VPK and 5 year olds are
gearing up for Kindergarten! We have been extending our learning about buildings, simple machines, and
tubes & tunnels. We have also begun to look at recycling to prepare for Life Cycle and Earth Day
activities. We continue to develop our skills as we move along through our developmental
standards. Letters, sounds, concepts about print, and social skills are embedded throughout all parts of
our days through our hands-on, curriculum-focused experiences to enhance their learning every day. This
is our crunch time-let's work together to prepare our little friends! :)
Grade 1 What an amazing field trip at Young at Art. The students all had a blast. In Writing, we are moving into writing opinion pieces. Math will be data using graphs and charts. Please continue reading with your child each night and working on addition and subtraction.
Grade 2 Second grade is moving along to new concepts and skills that are surely exciting! For Reading, we will start to spiral review including main idea and details, compare and contrast two texts and stories, and character traits. For writing, we will continue to practice writing a strong paragraph that respond to text. For Math, we will learn about length and measurement using customary units. For Science, we will learn about magnets and gravity. For Social Studies, we will learn about U.S. citizens and government. We will continue to shine in April! Grade 3 For the month of April, our hard working 3rd graders finally got to show what they know on the Reading FSA (Florida Standard Achievement) test. They will continue to press forward in Math, learning two-dimensional shapes and time intervals. In Science, they are learning to measure and compare temperatures of solids and liquids. Looking ahead, our students will continue memorizing the multiplication facts and then division, too. We hope our students can have all their multiplication facts memorized by the end of April. Knowing these facts well will be a positive asset going
