ISSUE BRIEF: PHILANTHROPY & COMMUNITY2013 –2014 HIGHLIGHTS
2
“Before I was involved with this program, I had no idea what STEM was. Sure, I take math and science classes, but STEM is way more than what we learn in school. For one thing, it’s not reading about an idea—it’s seeing it in action. What I like most about STEM is that I learn just as much setting up the experiments as I do once we put things into action.”
– Eddie, 11 years old, Boys & Girls Clubs
of Paterson & Passaic

Launched in 2009, Connect a Million Minds (CAMM) is Time Warner Cable’s signature philanthropic commitment, designed to inspire the problem solvers of tomorrow by connecting young people to the wonders of STEM.
Key program accomplishments: Connected more than one million young people to hands-on learning opportunities in STEM
Exceeded our original $100 million philanthropic commitment to CAMM. By the end of 2014, our support of this program stood at $160 million… and counting.
Grew our Connectory—an online tool to find STEM activities and resources in local communities—to include more than 5,480 organizations with thousands of hands-on STEM learning opportunities
Brought high-quality STEM programming to leading national afterschool organizations supporting underserved youth, including Boys & Girls Clubs of America and YMCA of the USA
We continue to invest in Connect a Million Minds with original public service announcements (PSAs), employee volunteers, new episodes of our original TV series It Ain’t Rocket Science, grants to non-profit partners and our connectamillionminds.com website, where parents can find hands-on STEM learning opportunities in their communities.

Broadband Access: In New York City,
Time Warner Cable Learning Labs is
an initiative to provide New Yorkers
with free access to computers and
high-speed Internet. By partnering
with local non-profit organizations,
TWC is developing Learning Labs

for communities in need across
NYC. The company has committed to
opening 40 Learning Labs by
2020 within its NYC service area.
As of the end of 2014, TWC had

Additional Community Support (CONTINUED)
Internet Safety & Digital Literacy:
TWC continues our partnership with
Common Sense Media (CSM), the national non-profit organization
dedicated to helping kids and
families thrive in a world of media
and technology. In 2013, we offered
our customers free access to
CSM’s Digital Passport™, a mobile
app for Android™ and iPad®. Digital
Passport™ uses engaging games
and videos to address key issues
that kids face online today: safety
and security, privacy, cyberbullying,
responsible cell phone use, and
respecting creative work. We offer
a range of resources to help parents
and families make safe and smart
choices on-screen and online.

available through Common
Sense Media.
AMBER Alert: We participate in
the AMBER Alert program through
an agreement with the National
Center for Missing & Exploited
Children (NCMEC). AMBER Alerts
are issued by law enforcement
to quickly engage the public in
the most serious child abduction
cases, when a child is believed to
be in imminent danger and there
is enough descriptive information
about the victim and abduction to
assist in the recovery of the child.
NCMEC redistributes AMBER Alerts,
on behalf of the U.S. Department of
Justice, to a network of secondary
distributors that include companies,
businesses and organizations
that have the capability to
deliver geographically-targeted
messages. TWC is one of the
largest participating companies to
redistribute alerts to its employees.
As an AMBER Alert secondary
distributor, TWC’s more than 18,000
technicians receive alerts whenever
they are in an area where an alert
has been activated. As a result,
TWC technicians are able to serve
as additional eyes and ears in our
communities in the effort to protect
our children, each and everyday.
Natural Disaster Relief
& Preparedness: TWC is focused
on helping families prepare for a
natural disaster. We partner with
The Weather Channel to host
“Connect with Weather” disaster
preparedness events. The program
combines best-in-class weather
and science information from The
Weather Channel with safety and
preparedness tips from some of the
nation’s top non-profit organizations,
including the American Red Cross. In
2013 and 2014, we hosted six events
for more than 6,000 children and
parents across TWC communities,
including Austin, TX; Columbia, SC;
Kansas City, KC; Los Angeles, CA;
Louisville, KY and New York, NY.
In 2014, TWC provided PSA airtime to these priority areas:
Focus Area PSA airtime value
Disaster Relief & Preparedness $23.3 million
Diversity & Inclusion $18.3 million
Environment $4.9 million
Internet Safety & Digital Literacy $7.0 million
