It’s amazing to ponder that a small three-pound organ controls a person’s entire body! BRAIN-Y FACTS (continued): • Information is processed by your brain at speeds up to 268 miles per hour (120 meters per second). There are more electrical impulses generated in a single day by the brain than by all the world’s telephones. The brain’s energy is sufficient to illuminate a 25-watt light bulb. • The two hemispheres of the brain are bridged by the corpus callosum, tissue that enables the two parts to communicate. This part of the brain is 11 percent larger in those people who are ambidextrous — able to write with both hands. • The cerebellum, located at the base of the skull, coordinates muscle movements and balance. Impairment in this area results in the loss of ability to walk or reach out and grab something.• Your brain uses 20 percent of all the blood circulating throughout your body. It flows through the 100,000 miles of blood vessels in the brain. All it takes is eight to 10 seconds of lack of blood to the brain for you to lose consciousness. • The brain also uses 20 percent of all the oxygen we breathe. It can live for four to six minutes without oxygen before damage begins to occur. Lack of oxygen for five to 10 minutes will result in permanent damage.• The horseshoe-shaped hippocampus is crucial in the process of transferring short-term memory into long-term memory. It’s responsible for forming, organizing and sorting memories. • The brain begins to shrink in mass by about 0.25 percent a year after age 30. By age 80, as much as 20 percent of the nerve connections in the hippocampus may have been lost. Only 30 percent of 80-year-old brains perform as well as those of young adults. • Wernicke’s Area and Broca’s Area are both important in the area of language. While Wernicke’s is responsible for comprehension of speech, Broca’s is involved in the production of speech. If Wernicke’s Area is damaged, a person loses the ability to understand language. He or she can speak clearly, but the combination of words makes no sense. Those with an impaired Broca’s Area understand language, but can’t properly form the words to produce speech. • If you’re having trouble focusing on a task and can’t complete a sequence of movements or solve a problem, you may have an impairment of the frontal lobe of the cerebral cortex. This area can also produce mood changes, changes in personality and social behavior, and an inability to interact with others. • Talk about using your brain to its full potential! Healthy Claws/Nails and the Ability to Scratch

Domestic barn cats use their claws to catch prey, climb to escape predators, protect and develop breeding territories and calm an itch. The evolution of this highly developed tool/weapon is one of keys to the domestic cat’s survival and why felines became working partners with their owners and more.

Most great societies of the world elevated the cat to almost worship status. Even in America, one of the most successful Broadway plays of all time was CATS! In China, there is a cat karma saying “if you don’t like cats, you must have been a rat in your former life.” Cats are the number one companion animal in this country – Meow!

As a weapon to protect territory or to catch prey the feline claw apparatus has no equal. Cats hone their claws to a sharp tool by scratching. This provides great needed exercise, is a pleasurable, and provides the cat with defensive skills. Free living cats thrive with scratching.

The modern indoor feline has encountered some major problems scratching furniture and scratching play with their owners. This type of behavior is natural for the feline but the modern cat owner is not aware why this inconvenient, destructive habit exists. Because of the lack of understanding, cats are given up to humane societies and most are euthanized for this ‘bad’ behavioral problems. Sad!

Are there ways to help your cat co-exist in your house?

1. The need for scratching is instinctual and good exercise – scratching is normal!

2. Train your cat to use a scratching post(s).3. Get your cat some ‘cat furniture’ that is

OK to be the cat’s very own.4. Play with your cat because boredom is a

common cause of increased scratching.5. Trim you cat’s nails every two weeks –

decreases damage and is healthy for the cat.

6. Try Soft Paws – glued-on guards that don’t injure furniture.

7. And if all else fails – quality declaw surgery. This last resort may save your cat’s life.

Millions of years ago in the shadow of Mt. Kilimanjaro in Africa a unique combination of metamorphic rocks deposits grew into precious crystals beneath the weight of the great moun-tain. For millenniums they were unknown to man until one day in the late 1960s some pass-ing Masai shepherds saw a sparkle of light reflecting off of some crystals that were finally exposed to the sun. They took them along, shared them with the world, and Tanzanite, an extraordinary gemstone found only in Tanzania, was revealed. The search for the blue stone surrounded by a fine hint of purple continues today mainly in smallish mines – only in Tanzania. For the most part only small grains are found, but from time to time mineworkers discover a larger crystal. Though only recently discovered it has become one of the most coveted gemstones in the world. The deep blue with the slightly purple tinge of tanzanite makes it one of the most flamboyant and elegant gemstones available. THIS IS A HAMMERBy Samantha Mazzotta

How Not to Adjust Your Thermostat

Q: My mother-in-law insists on cranking the old manual thermostat all the way to the left on a hot

day. She says this will cool the house faster. When it gets too cold inside, she cranks it all the way to the right to turn off the air conditioner. How can I tell her that isn’t the most efficient way to cool a

house? -- Damian L., Springfield, Mass.

A: Well, I’m no expert in how to break the news to someone who’s stubbornly insistent on doing

things her way. But her method of controlling the air temperature is not only inefficient, it’s a quick

way to break the thermostat. In fact, that may already have happened. Your mother-in-law is probably controlling the ther-mostat this way because she is not getting the

comfortable temperature she wants when she sets the thermostat in the typical “comfortable” range

of 65 F to 75 F. This may have happened from turning the control gauge too far left or right, or it may simply be an old thermostat in need of

replacement.Instead of insisting that she set the thermostat

in one place and leave it alone, talk to her about bringing in a heating and cooling contractor to in-spect the entire air conditioning system, including

the thermostat. And try to persuade her to have the old thermostat replaced with a more accurate,

programmable electronic thermostat. The cost savings that result from regularly maintaining a cooling system and keeping the temperature in a

comfortable range can be significant. And a programmable thermostat can remove one

chore from her to-do list: It can lower or raise the interior temperature of the house at set times,

without her having to manually set the thermostat.

HOME TIP: During the peak cooling months of summer, change your air conditioner’s air filter

once a month.

who memorized 96 historical events in just five minutes. It took this accountant just over 26 seconds to memorize the order of a shuffled deck of cards. His trick is to create associations between the items he is memorizing. • Ever wonder why you can’t tickle yourself? It’s because your brain is able to distinguish between unexpected touch and your own touch.• Research confirms that brain waves are more active when you are dreaming than when you are awake. If you’re average, you’ll have between four and seven dreams a night over the course of one to two hours. • Think about it! The average brain does just that — It produces about 70,000 thoughts on a normal day. • Certain scents can trigger memories, for example, the smell of roses might bring a family member’s funeral into vivid focus. This is because the olfactory nerve, the one that registers smells, is very close to the amygdala, that part of the brain connected to emotions and their memories, and also to the hippocampus, an area associated with memory. If these areas are damaged, the ability to identify certain scents can be affected.• Want to increase your brain power? Reading aloud promotes brain development, as do music lessons, which boost the brain’s organizational ability. Children who learn two languages by the age of five will develop a denser gray matter. Those who grow up in a stimulating environment can have up to a 25-percent greater ability to learn. • Do all you can to keep your brain healthy! Avoid stress, which has been shown to affect brain structure and function. Studies show that artificial flavorings and preservatives also have a negative effect on IQ. And a seven-year study reported that those who eat seafood at least once a week have a 30-percent lower occurrence of dementia. • The third leading cause of death in America is by stroke. This occurs when blood supply to a part of the brain is disturbed, the result of a blockage, such as a clot, or by a lack of blood flow, such as a burst blood vessel or hemorrhage. The function of the affected area is severely affected, including inability to move limbs, understand speech or see.• An elephant’s brain may be larger than a human brain, but its percentage of total body weight is much smaller. The human brain is about 2 percent of total body weight, but the elephant’s is just 0.15 percent.

Ask the Dentistby Dennis L. Burgner, D.D.S.

Master, Academy of General Dentistry

Q. My 7 year-old daughter has no cavities. Should she have sealants placed to protect her teeth, or can she just brush and floss?Q. It depends on several factors. You and your daughter can con-

trol some factors, such as effective oral hygiene, diet (sweet snacking), and regular preventive dental visits. However, you cannot control the hereditary anatomy of her teeth. That is, some children (and adult) teeth have deep pits and fissured grooves (“groovy teeth”). It can become nearly impossible for the tooth-brush bristle to reach that last little “sugar bug” entrenched deep into the deep pit or fissure. This plus even a little “sugar” in the diet from processed foods can set up decay. Research has shown that almost everybody has a 95% chance of getting cavities in these areas. A well-placed sealant can protect the “groovy” tooth surface from bacteria and acid at-tack caused by sweet snacking.

What is a sealant?Q. A. sealant is a thin

plastic film bonded to the chewing sur-faces of the tooth. The sealant fills in the deep pits and grooves where bacteria can hide. The “sugar bugs” have fewer places set up shop, which prevents decay. It’s important to note that a sealant is only ef-fective in the pits and groove areas, not the smooth surfaces of the tooth that are easier to clean.

Q. Are they effective?Q. Yes! About 80% of decay occurs in the deep pits and grooves

of the chewing surfaces. Combined with twice-daily brushing with a fluoridated toothpaste, healthy nutrition, and twice-year-ly visits to the dentist, properly applied sealants are 100 percent effective in preventing cavities in these areas. Sealants have been described as “the greatest advance in preventive dentistry since fluoride”.

R. Q. Aren’t sealants just for kids? Q. No! Adults can have “groovy teeth” too. They can protect

any areas of adult pits and fissures – that do not already have a filling present.

Q. Are sealants expensive? No! Sealants cost much less than fillings and help reduce

future dental expenses. Most insurance companies recognize that sealants are cost-effective, and provide up to 100% of the cost, especially for sealants in molars.

Are You a "Hands-on" Investor?

The investment world can be complex — so you may not want to navigate it alone. But when it comes to getting professional advice, you

certainly have an abundance of choices. How can you know which approach is right for you?

The answer depends, to a large extent, on how you choose to work with a qualified financial advisor — someone with the training and experience to help you work toward your financial goals. When you work with a financial advisor, he or she will analyze your financial situation — your income, current assets, family sta-tus and short- and long-term investment

goals, such as helping pay for your children’s (or grandchildren’s) college education and attaining a comfortable retirement.

You can choose different ways of working with a financial advisor — and a deciding factor may be how “hands on” you want to be with your investment strategy. To illustrate this concept, let’s look at two common ways investors interact with financial advisors:

Taking recommendations and making choices — After evaluat-ing your financial situation, goals, risk tolerance and time horizon, your financial advisor can recommend appropriate investments. Over time, your financial advisor will communicate with you regularly to keep track of changes in your life and to suggest any changes you may need to make in your portfolio. Of course, you have the final say in accepting or rejecting these recommendations, which is why this method is considered a hands-on way to invest. Investing through a managed account — In this situation, your financial advisor will help you create, implement and refine your long-term financial strategy, but the money managers will make the daily investment decisions, relying on a variety of criteria pertaining to your situation. For example, if your portfolio has become overweighted in a specific asset class, such as stocks or bonds, and is no longer aligned with your goals, it may automati-cally be brought back into balance.

So which method of investing is better for you? There’s really no one right answer for everyone. If you’re the sort of person who likes to make all your own decisions, then you might be better off following the hands-on approach with your financial advisor. On the other hand, if you are particularly busy and just don’t feel you have the time to be actively involved with day-to-day investment decisions, you might want to consider a managed account.

In any case, you’ll want to be comfortable with the method of in-vesting that you’ve chosen. So do your homework beforehand. Whether you’re interested in a hands-on relationship or a hands-off approach, you still need to interview several financial advisors to find one who has worked with people in your situation and who seems genuinely interested in helping you. During these inter-views, make sure you understand everything related to working with a financial advisor — the fees involved, the way decisions will be communicated to you if you choose a managed account, and so on.

Deciding how you want to invest is your first step in working to-ward your financial goals — so make the choice that’s right for you.

Basic Bankruptcy Information (part 1):

There are two distinct options for consumers through bankruptcy: Chapter 7 and Chapter 13. While either op-tion can lead to a forgiveness of dischargeable debts, the differences between the two chapters are significant.A Chapter 7 is considered a straight bankruptcy. Gener-ally it takes approximately 4 to 6 months from the date a case is filed until the time when the anticipated Order discharging qualifying debts enters.

Chapter 13, on the other hand, is a repayment plan. The minimum duration for a plan is 3 years and the maximum is 5 years. Once payments are completed, a discharge or-der can enter. The repayment plan can be a viable tool for addressing mortgage arrears, tax liability, vehicle loans, and many other areas of concern.

For either Chapter, an appearance at a Meeting of Credi-tors is required. The Meet-ing is automatically sched-uled and typically takes place about a month, to a month and a half, after the case is filed and typically lasts about 5 to 15 minutes.______________________FUTURE FORUM NO-TICE: If you have general questions about bankrupt-cy, email them to [email protected] . Select questions will be printed and answered in the next Tidbits installment!
