One for the ladies

Bert feared his wife Peg wasn’t hearing as well as she used to and he thought she might need a hearing aid.

Not quite sure how to approach her, he called the family Doctor to discuss the problem.

The Doctor told him there is a simple informal test the husband could perform to give the Doctor a better idea about her hearing loss.

‘Here’s what you do,’ said the Doctor, ‘stand about 40 feet away from her, and in a normal conversational speaking tone see if she hears you. If not, go to 30 feet, then 20 feet, and so on until you get a response.’

That evening, the wife is in the kitchen cooking dinner, and he was In the den. He says to himself, ‘I’m about 40 feet away, let’s see what happens.’ Then in a normal tone he asks, ‘Honey, what’s for dinner?’

No response.

So the husband moves closer to the kitchen, about 30 feet from his wife and repeats, ‘Peg, what’s for dinner?’

Still no response.

Next he moves into the dining room where he is about 20 feet from his Wife and asks, ‘Honey, what’s for dinner?’

Again he gets no response.

So, he walks up to the kitchen door, about 10 feet away. ‘Honey, what’s for dinner?’

Again there is no response.

So he walks right up behind her. ‘Peg, what’s for dinner?’ (I just love this!!)

‘Dammit, Bert, for the FIFTH time, CHICKEN!’

I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the club men who gave up their Friday mornings to do some much needed maintenance on our course. We have spent the last couple of months raising and cleaning out underneath the tee tree around the course to make it easier for us all, and more importantly to speed up play.

We have worked damn hard in some areas to clean up certain golf holes and would like to think we have done a worthwhile job. Our group of volunteers will now take a few well earned weeks off then get back into it in the new year.

We also have plenty of room for anybody who wants to donate one Friday morning a month to help out, the more the merrier and the easier it becomes for all. Remember we are volunteering our services for ALL club members.

So to all my workmates and fellow golfers I say Thank You, and to everyone at BGC have a very Merry Xmas and a safe New Year.

To the following I salute you :Mark Pearson, Kevin Pearce, Peter Wolfe, Ian Cave, McKay Anderson, James Wilks, Gienek Mieszelewicz, David Hartigan, Brett Youl, Cec Dixon, Mal Turner, Alan Grisdale and Brian Pascoe. If I’ve left anybody out I do apologize. It really is pleasing to know that people are prepared to put themselves out to help our course and club.

Thanks guys,David Combe

Combe’s Commandos Efforts Benefit All!!

At about 8pm the Chairman, Vice President Keith Beggs welcomed 26 financial members and one un-financial “member”. This followed a number of phone calls to members living close by, to ensure the required quorum was present. Five Life Members present were welcomed by name. A period of silence was observed for Bettine Piper and Elva Edwards who had passed away during the year.

The Minutes of the 2016 AGM were Moved, Seconded and carried by a show of hands.

Written reports were presented by Vice President, Hon. Treasurer, Hon. Secretary, House Manager with the composition of the new Ladies sub-com being read to the meeting. The Hon. Treasurer presented the 2016-17 Audit report from Zamsky Accounting, who had taken over from our previous auditor Peter Troedel.

The Captain and Vice Captain were apologies with reports not available. All reports contained acknowledgement and thanks to all our volunteers. The above reports were moved, seconded and carried.

Zamsky Accounting in Caulfield South were appointed our BGC Club Auditor for 2017-18.

Two Notices of Motion that had been properly lodged with the Hon. Secretary, and displayed, were debated:

Rule 18(b) motion was carried as proposed “Joining fees payable for all categories shall be fixed from time to time by The Committee of Management (CoM) and, when so fixed shall be deemed to be the Joining Fees pursuant to this Rule.”

Rule 45 motion was carried after an amendment (10 increased to 20) “No business shall be transacted at any Annual or Special General Meeting unless a quorum of members is present at the time when the meeting proceeds to business. A quorum shall consist of twenty (20) members personally present and entitled to vote.”

The Honorariums for 2017-18 were proposed to be the same as for 2016-17 and were carried.

The new Committee of Management was elected as nominated. There was only one nomination for each role available:

What Happened at Our 2017 AGM?

The new President then took charge of the meeting guiding a lively discussion including a Q & A session.

Most members at the AGM held a positive outlook for the BGC over the next couple of years, based on the belief, and hope, that the water harvesting project, soon to be completed, will eventually give LMS access to water all year, which should enable them to keep greens and fairways in better condition, more easily carry out much needed course improvements and help with ongoing course maintenance.

Given the considerable sum of money now expended on the golf course upgrade and associated water harvesting works it was mentioned that ongoing maintenance would be required to support the new works. This would be closely monitored during the months immediately following the contractor’s 12-month maintenance agreement once the project is completed.

The current level of membership was discussed. Growing the membership is the number one issue for the CoM and for all club members. The decline in membership since 2000, is without a doubt, a result of long-term lack of water and neglect of the course, resulting in deteriorating playing conditions over at least the last ten (10) years. It is hoped the good reputation the BPGC enjoyed in the past can be quickly restored thus assisting the BGC to gain more members.

It was agreed our subs income and club trading turn-over must improve over the next few years. It was also agreed that our concerted efforts to gain new members must be given appropriate priorities and be timed to coincide with the expected improvements to the golf course.

The President closed the meeting at about 9pm and offered those present a drink at the bar with the discussions about our club continuing for about an hour after the meeting was closed.

HighlightsDuring November the Men’s Club Championships were played after being postponed due to the construction works on the Golf Course. Congratulations go to the Champions as follows: Open – Chris Tesoriero, A Grade – David Combe, B Grade - Jim Warden and C Grade – Don Fraser.

Saturday Player’s Presentation EveningOn Saturday, 2nd December we had the annual presentation of major trophies. Also, the presentation to the Winter Classic winning team, Asada, as well as the final count for the Denis Farrell Medal which ended up with Rod Boucher winning back to back Medals.

While I said this on the night, I want the rest of the Club Members to know that it takes a number of people to run the year’s competitions successfully. I especially want to thank our Handicapper, Ray Desmond, Assistant Handicapper, Ken Brown, Secretary, Karl Lindberg, Trophy Steward, Mark Pearson and Barry Goring who moves the markers each week and made a special effort as Course Marshall during the time of the temporary 9 hole course. I would also like to thank David Heraud for preparing the meals for the Pennant matches and Malcolm Turner who does the booking sheet every week.

Brighton Golf Course Construction WorksThe Storm Water Harvesting Project on the Golf Course is nearing completion, but due to unexpected delays the finish date is unknown. At least we are able to play the 18 holes, with some minor restrictions, and all the Members are generally finding golf enjoyable again. The connection from the main drain that goes under our car park to the retention tanks in the practice fairway is currently being constructed. Once this is completed we should see the dams filling up and the fairways being watered.

Please note that any obvious areas of abnormal ground condition due to the construction works is ground under repair (GUR) and the player may take relief to the nearest point out of that ground condition. The area to the left of the 5th fairway under the pine trees where there is loose soil is currently GUR as is the wood chips on the hill behind the trees.

Players must not enter any areas within the dam walls to retrieve a ball. Anyone doing so will be disqualified from that day’s competition. The tops of the dam walls have been planted to reduce erosion and the soil is still very loose.

Preferred Lies (Temporary Local Rule)As of Saturday, 4th November, 2017 the Match Committee of the Brighton Golf Club has made one amendment to the “preferred lies” through the green as introduced on the 6th October.

A ball that is within one club length of a tree trunk MUST be played as it lies, unless the tree is less than 2 club lengths in height.

A ball lying on a fairway or in the rough, OTHER THAN NEAR A TREE TRUNK, may be lifted without penalty and cleaned. Before lifting the ball, the player must mark its position.

If the ball is in the rough and you decide to take a preferred lie you must place the ball in the rough.

The player must place the ball within one club length and not nearer the hole than where it originally lay.

On the green the player may place the ball within a hand span of and not nearer the hole than where it originally lay.

Any breach of these conditions will incur a one shot penalty.

Ladies Activities

The ladies finished off the year’s competition with a Mixed Ambrose event. It was a hot day with a good turnout of 9 groups. The winners on the day were Robyn Napolitano, Liz Stevens, Julie Butcher and Kevin “Tubby” Pearce (a long standing and successful member of the BGC Men).

We enjoyed another great turnout for our Christmas lunch at The Bay in Mordialloc with 44 past and present players attending. There was much merriment, games and raffles as you can see from the photos.

Administratively speaking the Ladies committee held a Christmas meeting which was graciously hosted by Rosemary Fry at her home. Apart from the food and drinks a lot was accomplished at the meeting! I would like to thank the Committee again for all their hard work and help throughout the year.

Wishing everyone a very Merry Festive Season and good golfing in 2018!

He was seen loitering on the course and even entered the clubrooms pretending to be ………… Yeah Right!?!?!

BGC Member Profiles

Keith and Margaret Beggs married 52 years ago and have five children and 10 Grandchildren.

A successful business owner, specializing in industrial element heating ap-plications Keith travelled widely growing his business until it became a take-over target by a larger operator. Retiring but remaining active Keith took on, with renewed gusto, his existing role of BGC Club Treasurer. Many of the current benefits club members enjoy today derive from Keith’s initiatives.

Treasurer, Vice President, President and Life Member over more than 25 years indicates the enormous time and effort he has directed toward the growth and development of our club. Most members live within a 5klm radius of the clubrooms. Keith and Margaret live in Berwick, 34 klms each way. He is at the clubrooms working at least 2 days a week. All this in a voluntary capacity.

His leadership has resulted in the current $3ml course renovation which will support club membership growth into the future.

John McCreery has been our Club Captain since 2012, (a period of 8 years), a BGC member for 25 years and married to wife Lyn for 40 years.

During his working career John was involved with both councils and con-sulting engineering firms in the design and construction work associated with delivery of infrastructure specifically for new housing estates.

From a sporting background in Cricket and Baseball John chose Golf as a sport he could play as he matured. Finding the company of fellow mem-bers and improving his own handicap to his liking John has retained his BGC membership for a quarter of a century. During this time he has achieved two holes in one and a B Grade Championship.

As Club Captain John would love to see more members get involved in club activities including Committee, Sub committees, Pennant and Social functions to help build a general club team atmosphere.

Jim McAlpine has 4 children (2 of each), is retired and lives close to the clubrooms.

He was educated in his native country Scotland and emigrated to Australia in 1968, worked for 9 years on the Westgate Bridge then began his own scaffolding business which continues to this day managed by his son Ken.

A 15 year member of BGC Jim joined originally to do something other than work. What has kept him with us for so long is the good fellowship and close proximity to home.

Amongst his achievements is coming to better understand the game which is synonymous with Scotland, he loves social dancing (which is quite different to that other kind of dancing!!), swimming and of course golf.

As our new President Jim is very keen to continue the growth and develop-ment of the club he has come to love.
