Vice President’s Report
President and VP attended a recent Knox Council meeting and had discussions with various staff members. From this it was concluded that there was a need to promote the club more with the council and it was suggested a DVD presentation be obtained outlining the club function. P Cossins said that DVD he made earlier was available to the club Registrar A problem which had arisen with members paying their MAAA fees through other clubs had been rectified also the previous renewal forms had now been revised for easier use Training Going smoothly with some slope soaring training proposed at a future date C.D. report
Recent Ales event was well attended with 12 flyers top 5 place getters were: 1. A. Mayhew 2. C.Collyer 3. G.Sullivan 4. P.Cossins 5. A.Peate
Bruce advised that height limiters were temporarily out of stock with new supplies available in November Some discussion arose about the proper way to fit the limiter and it was thought a good idea to put an article showing the right way in the newsletter
Geoff Hearne offered to run the Ales event before the monthly meeting night during
Daylight saving time
It is also planned to run different events for wooden gliders only during the next year

General Business
The slope championships usually held at Mt Hollow back will have a format change this year The event to be run by D.Bayliss and P. Cossins will be a VARMS “Fun day” instead and all are welcome
A fair turnout to the last working bee encouraged Colin to suggest another one where some AG pipe needed to be laid to improve drainage, the positioning of seats coming from KCC also plans for more shade cloth and benches
Further discussion on the shed extensions/toilets, interior lining etc with the possibility of the club applying for KCC grants to go a fair way to cover those costs.
The raffle to be reintroduced at next meeting with the first prize kindly donated by D.Prattley He also did some show and tell with a F5J glider that he had brought along and how to get components into a thin fuselage concluding with a report on recent comps and his purchase of a new high Tec glider Presentation The President using the white board gave a lecture on the principles of flight stability and the importance of correct CofG illustrating the need for correct trimming for smooth flying. General discussions and questions from the members followed with D Prattley further adding to the discussion with various aspects of setting up a glider for competition Meeting closed 9.10PM

VARMS LEVEL 2
Thermal Duration Task
This task is designed for you to fly with only a timer and no other assistance.
1. Launch glider to approximately 100 metres altitude using bungee, winch or
electric motor. If using electric launch, then switch off motor.
2. A stopwatch is then started by an adult observer. Fly for 10 minutes. No
restarting of the motor is allowed and the use of a variometer is not
allowed.
3. After 10 minutes, land within 30 sec. The nose of the model must finish
within a rectangle 15x4 metres. The 15 m dimension is in line with the
wind direction. The VARMS landing ropes are easiest to use for this.
4. The task is to be completed on 2 different dates. Any number of attempts
can be made to achieve the task. 1, 2 and 3 must all be achieved in the same
flight.
5. Complete this form and send it to the VARMS secretary for recording.

The first ever Sunday ALES was a great afternoon of flying with 12 pilots competing and various helpers lending a hand with timing and electronics setup. We placed the landing ropes over the far side of the strip to allow plenty of space for landings in the WNW breeze. The ground underfoot was a bit soft but not toooo wet really. Six rounds were flown over 12 heats with seven pilots winning at least one heat. Alan Mayhew took out first with four winning heats, followed by Colin Collyer in 2nd place. A careful check of the scores found a few mistakes in the calculations on the day. So, some of the placings from 3rd to 8th have changed from those announced on the day and at the General Meeting on the 9th of September. I intend to use Gerry Carter’s Gliderscore program the next time. However, I can’t run this on my (work) laptop so I will need to find another machine to run it on. Final official scores are as follows:
Place Pilot R1 R2 R3 R4 R5 R6 Total
1 Alan Mayhew 1000 657 1000 932 1000 1000 5589
2 Colin Collyer 1000 1000 712 922 842 807 5283

The Victorian section of the above Association now meets at the VARMS Clubroom on the 4th Thursday in every month, except December when there is no meeting. Starting time is around 8.00 pm. Supper is provided and friendly discussion follows. Attendance fee $3.00 to cover costs. The meeting takes the form of a “show and tell” with members, and others, bringing along their projects to present to the gathering. Also there may be discussion on technical matters related to electric models. There is normally a lot of experience amongst those present, so it is a good time to sort out any problems. I am sorry I will not be coming to any of the aerotow or any other club events. I am forced to recognise that I am now 86 years old. I cannot move about on my feet as freely as I used to and my eyesight isn't brilliant either. I have given up driving and sold my car.
I do not want to cease aero modeling altogether. I might still build myself a few small models for fun indoors.
I have sold several of the large models and the trailer that were advertised. Quite a lot of things remain:
Sailplanes (servos included in most cases)
Martini 3 m contest sailplane (No motor) Ailerons, flaps etc. Flown a good deal for some years. Servos installed.
2 sets of 3m (approx.) sailplane wings
Scale sailplanes
Hangwind. 3 metres span, 1/4 scale early (1928) soaring sailplane, model span 4 metres. Model complete but has never flown. Servos fitted. Rigging requires care.
Other things
Winch
Multiplex PROFI MC 4000 transmitter
Spectrum DX 8 transmitter
Spruce & Pine Spar materials
Balsa
Other odds and ends, come and see. Phone me on (03) 9377 2374 or Email <[email protected]> to make a date and time.
Good luck with all future club activities.
Best wishes Martin Simonds

As you can see, there is a lack of material in this issue. Even four-and-a-half pages of event promotions cannot even fill all the available space. Not having the time (or creative juices) to write a new article prior to the issue deadline, I’ve scoured the internet for something that may be of interest to members. All photos are from the Manilla Slope Fest thread on RCGroups. This event is held at Mt Borat (northern NSW) in September each year.

The Keyboard
Your frequency key should have your full name written clearly on it so that you can be easily recognised and contacted in case of a frequency clash. Mobile phone number on the key is a good idea too, in case you have departed and left your key in the board thus stopping someone else using that frequency. Members using 2.4 GHz sets should still insert a standard key in the appropriate section of the keyboard.

VARMS (Inc.) was formed in 1968 to get together aero-modelers who were interested in building and flying radio controlled gliders. Members fly at many places, but have a home field, within the Knox Regional Sports Park (South Wantirna) some 60 metres west of the rear of the State Basketball Centre- Entrance off George Street, where Training Classes with dual controlled gliders are held every second Sunday 10-1.00pm. A calendar for training is attached to the flying field gate.
VARMS Training is kindly sponsored by Hyperion Australia.
VARMS organizes regular competitions in both Slope and Thermal Soaring, from fun-fly, scale, open competition and self launching (electric) gliders. General Meetings are held on the SECOND FRIDAY of each month (except January) – at the VARMS Clubroom near State Basketball Centre (as above) and, during daylight saving time there may be limited flying allowed before Meeting starts at 8.00pm. Visitors are welcome. Formalities are usually followed by lively discussions on matters of interest to all modellers followed by a cup of your favourite brew.
