8 Tips for Parents To Help Their Athletes Perform with Confidence

Parents are always asking us how they should interact with their athletes before games and duringpractice. They want to know how to best support their sons or daughters' confidence in sports. Here are afew general guidel ines parents can use to help their athlete perform with confidence and enjoy sports!

1 . Self-motivation is the best type of motivation.

Motivation must be cultivated from the love of sports and competition - from within the athlete himself. Youwant them to practice and compete for themselves and not because they want to do it for you or to please aparent.

2. Your agenda may not be your athlete's agenda.

A thletes play sports for many reasons. Maybe they love the competition, the social aspect, being part of agroup, or the challenge of competition. Your agenda for your athlete's participation might interfere withhis/her motivation to compete.

3. Help your athlete focus on the process.

Of course everyone wants to win, but teaching your athlete to focus on the process, the here and now, andfocusing on one play at a time wil l help them play in the moment and with confidence.

4. Model composure and poise during competition.

I f you become tight, serious, angry, or frustrated, so wil l your athlete. For athletes to perform well , the goalis to be loose, carefree, but at the same time focused on performing. Model composure by staying relaxedand positive.

6. Always give positive feedback after competition.

I t's easy to jump in and give your athlete advice on what not to do in the next competition or how to dobetter, but you should first give positive encouragement and pick out one or two skil ls your son/daughter didwell .

7. Resist coaching during competition.

Practice and training are over. During competition, it's time to let them play. Too much coaching ontechnique or what you think your player should be doing can lead to a control led or cautious performance.

8. Fuel their confidence.

Real confidence is stable and enduring. Help your athlete grow confidence by focusing them on what theydid well after each game. Encourage them to improve upon instead of dwell on mistakes, and help them tothink positively when they have doubts.

FMF: FLEMINGTON MIDGET FOOTBALL - SINCE 1 967

This weekend was a very busy and very successful one for FMF. Many of the first

week kinks were ironed out by our hard working volunteers and gameday improved

week over week.

The Jr. Skyland Conference kicked off action this weekend while the Pioneer teams

headed into week 2. The FMF Complex hosted it's first ever Patriot League games on

Saturday afternoon. FMF hosted opening night for our JRD Skylands teams at

Stewart Field while our Pioneer teams made the long trek to Blairstown on Saturday

evening. All of the teams showed well , led by our Jr. Red Devil JV team pitching a

shutout over Vorhees while our Pioneer Varsity and Peewee teams won comfortably

over North Warren. All of our players, cheerleaders and coaches should be proud of

their efforts.

With so many games happening sometimes all at once, it is critiacal that our parents

are proactive in signing up and fulfi l l ing their volunteer hour commitments. Jeannie

Whalen has sent out reminders via our team coordinators that if you have not signed

up for volunteer duties by the end of this week, FMF wil l have to cash your volunteer

bond in order to hire someone to perform the necesary game day duties.

FMF is a volunteer organization run by volunteers. We are community organization

not a business venture. I t takes the help of al l of our famil ies pitching in to make our

gameday as successful as they are. I real ize that in today's hectic world, it is easy to

use gameday as an opportunity to relax, watch your child's game, then go home.

Imagine if everyone took that attitude. . . where would we be?

See you around the field.

Pioneer Varsity Gets First Win Easily

Because of the WCMFL rotating schedule, Flemington and North Warren have

not played since 201 0. North warren won the 201 0 match up and Flemington

has had to wait 3 long years for a chance to exact revenge. This Saturday, on

a perfect autumn evening, the Pioneer Varsity trekked up to Blairstown to

renew their rivalry with the North Warren Patriots.

Flemington kicked off to North Warren to begin the game. The stifl ing Pioneer

defense, led by tackles from DJ Stevenson, Ryan Hughes, Dan Furmato and

Brian Torres forced the Patriots to punt. Flemington promptly took control of the

game when on the third play from scrimmage, Quentin Lacombe broke free and

romped 50 yards before being brought down inside the Patriot 5 yard l ine. Karl

Heidersberger took the handoff and scampered around the left end for a

touchdown, staking the Pioneers to a quick 6-0 lead. Furmato kicked the extra

point and the Pioneers lead swelled to 8-0.

The lead was short l ived, however, as the North Warren upback picked up the ensuing kickoff as it bounced toward him and streaked down

field untouched for a score. After the extra point kick barely made it through the uprights, the score stood tied at 8-8 midway through the first

quarter.

Undaunted, Flemington took possession and began to impose their wil l on the

North Warren defense, relentlessly pounding the middle of the defensive l ine.

Lacombe broke free again behind crushing blocks from Danny Eggemann,

Brendan Clare and Heidersberger. This time the defense could not catch him

and LaCombe scored from 37 yards out. The extra point was no good, but the

Pioneers held a 1 4-8 lead as the first quarter expired.

The second quarter saw a bruising battle between two tenacious defenses. The

Pioneer defensive charge was led by bone jarring tackles from Heidersberger,

Cameron Basti, Brian Torres, Justin Torres, DJ Stevenson and Jacob Lavinge.

Furmato intercepted a tipped North Warren pass near the end of the quarter, but

Stevenson's passes to Furmato and Justin Torres weren't enough to capital ize as the clock expired, leaving the halftime score at 1 4-8.

The third and fourth quarters were very much like the second; lots of hard running by Stevenson and Furmato, lots of hard tackles by Justin

Torres, Lavigne, Basti and a swarming Pioneer defense. The hard-hitting action went back and forth between the twenties with the Pioneer

defense forcing turnovers (fumble recoveries by Pasquale Vizzoni and Brendan Clare) and the offense fighting mighti ly but being turned away

by the stingy Patriot defense.

In the fourth quarter, the Pioneers go the break they needed when a Brian Torres interception gave the Pioneers the ball deep in North Warren

territory. Consecutive runs by Stevenson and Furmato set up a touchdown sweep behind a key block from Alex DiMartino. Furmato's

touchdown run increased the Pioneer lead to 20-8 as the fourth quarter wound down.

On the ensuing kickoff, RJ Thornton's big hit got the crowd out of their seat. The defense fed off of the intensity and tackles by Alex Vitale

and Wil l iam Markey slowed the Patriot's last chance for a comeback offense. Markey then batted down a desperation pass attempt as time

expired to seal the Pioneer victory.

The Pioneers are home next week to face the Lopatcong Panthers in WCMFL action.

JAMES L. "JIMMY" WILSONOur Number One Fan

Jimmy Wilson left a lasting memory with everyone who visited Pioneer Field throughout the 1 980's and early1 990's. While his wheelchair kept him from taking part on the field, it couldn't keep him from being part of theteam. At the end of every summer, l ike the changing of the seasons, Jimmy was there to usher in footbal l

season. He was as much a part of the Pioneer family as the crack of pads echoing through the crisp autumn airand the roar of the crowd on game day. For close to a decade, Jimmy never missed a game, indeed, he nevermissed a practice in al l of his time with us. His love for the game and for the team was infectious and wil l beforever remembered. In 1 994, after his passing, the organization recognized Jimmy's contribution to our family

by naming the playing field after him and retiring the number one jersey, in memory of their #1 fan.

JOSEPH YASHKAS6/4/85 - 4/29/00 : Forever a Pioneer

Joey Yashkas was a Pioneer through and through. He played football for the program and was a greatteammate. Joey was a key member of the team from his peewee days through his eigth grade season. As

much as he loved football and his teammates, Joey also loved racing motorcycles. I t was this love that took himfrom us far too soon. After the tragic motorcycle accident that took his l ife in 2000, the organization retired hisnumber 55 and decreed that in remembrance of Joey and Jimmy, their numbers 1 and 55 be painted in the

corner of the endzone for every home game so that they wil l always be part of our family.
