Issue 5 | 19th January 2018
Dear Parents,
It has been a busy start to the Spring Term for us all and none more so than for our Pre-Test
candidates who are sitting a range of examinations for their entry into Senior School.
The rugby season is also in full flow. I am looking forward to our first Saturday fixture for the seniors
tomorrow and PP2 have enjoyed a wonderful afternoon of football playing their first competitive
matches of the term against Downsend. The girls have already been victorious on the hockey pitch.
We have also had cause for celebration with the success of our Public Speaking Team discoursing on
the all-important question – “Should we bring back Dinosaurs if we had the ability to do so?”
I would like to wish you all a belated Happy New Year and best wishes for 2018.
I look forward to commenting on the individual and collective achievements of Milbourne pupils as
the term progresses.

Important Reminders
Parking & Air Pollution
It has been brought to our attention that some parents keep their engines running after they have
parked their car for morning drop off or afternoon pickup. We ask that you please turn off your
engines once you have parked.
There are a number of children with respiratory problems and exhaust fumes do not assist the
situation. In addition, we have a number of families with younger, pre-school age children who are
pushed up to school in buggies. These children are at greater risk due to their proximity to vehicle
exhaust pipes. Your cooperation is much appreciated.
Church of the Holy Name
The church contacted us at the end of last term and have asked us to remind you of certain
requirements surrounding the use of the church car park by parents who hold a church car park
permit for morning drop off.
These requirements are:
(i) Parents and children should not walk across the front of the church entrance as this
disturbs early morning prayers – please use the tarmac pathway to the left of the church
car park entrance to walk onto Arbrook Lane;
(ii) Parents and children should not walk on the grass – please use the pathway as detailed
above;
(iii) The school has an agreement with the church to use their car park at morning drop off.
Please do not use the car park in the afternoon or remove the chains that stretch across
the entrances of both the church car park and the parking area in front of the church hall.
Please do not use the Church driveways or residents’ driveways to turn round at morning drop off or
afternoon collection.
Thank you for your understanding in these matters. Mrs Tilston
New Black Belt in Aikido
Congratulations to Rentaro in Form 4 who received his Teenage Black Belt for Aikido on Friday.
Apparently he is the youngest and the first male student to receive this belt at his club. His grading
lasted 45 minutes while he had to counteract black belt teenagers in different forms and moves. A
great achievement!
Dear Parents,
We have been delighted to welcome the Pre-Prep children back to school this term and they have
returned with their usual enthusiasm.
Casting our minds back to the hustle and bustle of last
term I would like to report back on the success of the
Christmas Hampers for the Oasis Children's Centre. All
the recipients were very grateful for their gifts and I
would like to extend a very heartfelt thanks, not only
to the generous contributors in the local community,
but also to you, our parents. A group of parents spent
a morning collating and packing the wonderful
hampers, which were then transported to Oasis. The
centre was overwhelmed by your generosity and I
know we helped to make Christmas special for the
people there. Thank you.
We hope that you all found the Curriculum Overview for each year group helpful and we look forward
to sharing your child's progress in the weeks ahead. Parents’ Evening is on Tuesday 6th February. The
sign-up sheets will be shared with you in due course.
Best wishes,
Mrs Elmer
Head of Pre-Prep
Celebrating Hanukkah in Reception
In December, Reception enjoyed learning about and celebrating Christmas. We also had the pleasure
of one of our mum’s, Mrs Goode, coming in to talk to us about Hanukkah, a Jewish celebration and
festival of lights.
Mrs Goode brought in a menorah to show the children and explained about the festival. The children
heard about Judah the
Maccabee and how he and
a small band of men
defeated a mighty army
and reclaimed the Holy
Temple in Jerusalem.
It was very informative and
Jonah was very pleased to
see his mum visit.
Mr Davies
Reception go on a ‘Bear Hunt’
The Reception children have all settled into the new term extremely well. This week, in Literacy, they
have enjoyed reading the book ‘We’re going on a Bear Hunt’ by Michael Rosen. The children have
been learning the rhythm of the story through the use of musical instruments, have produced some
wonderful pieces of writing when describing the different scenes from the book and have immersed
themselves in small world activities.
On Friday, the children concluded their learning by going on a real ‘Bear Hunt’ through Arbrook
Woods. They had tremendous fun squelching through the mud and walking through the big, dark
forest in their hunt for the bear. What a fantastic start to the new term! Mrs Hughes
Spring Concert 20th March
This year’s Spring Concert will take place on Tuesday 20th March at 6.30pm at The Church of the Holy
Name. There will be performances from various school ensembles, including: the Concert Band, the
String Ensemble, the Junior and Senior Choirs, the Advanced Recorder Group and all of the Year 3
Recorders, as well as a few selected soloists. Please do keep the date free in your diaries.
Assembly Performances
We are keen to continue encouraging performances in assembly this term. This is a particularly
good opportunity for any pupils who have music exams coming up this term to perform in front of
an audience. Pupils wishing to play should let Miss Cobham have the name of their piece, the
composer and the approximate length of performance as well as details of any accompaniment
e.g. CD or piano.
Stephan Dyakonov – Chorister Award
Congratulations to Stephan Dyakonov, who is a Hampton Court chorister and was presented with
their Chorister’s Award 2017 trophy.
Stephan also won their annual carol composing competition with his original setting of music to
‘Hark The Herald Angels Sing’, which the choir performed at the Hampton Court Christmas Carol
Service.

How Milbourne Memories are made!
The Tale of the Missing Shoes
There once lived three year groups of girls at Milbourne
Lodge. They were vivacious young girls who enjoyed
their games sessions and enjoyed being as noisy as
possible. One day Miss Slatter decided to take the girls
for a walk in the woods, little suspecting the adventures
that were soon to happen...
The wind whistled through the leaves of the trees and
it started to drizzle, but not once did the girls moan.
Instead they asked, "Miss Slatter, can we jump in the
mud?" Miss Slatter replied, "Of course!" Anna and
Elsie were in first. Mud soaked through their shoes and socks, but according to Elsie, "The muddier
the better!" Aura and Lilian jumped in next.
As the girls approached the end of the walk they decided to play a game. They had to jump in and
over puddles. Miss Slatter called the girls back and they all started to walk back to school. However,
Miss Slatter noticed a problem. "Lilian, where is your shoe!?" Miss Slatter cried. "I think I have lost it in
a puddle," replied Lilian.
The girls and Miss Slatter waded into the puddle to see if
the shoe could be retrieved, but to no avail. They
bumped into Mrs Sleeman with her dog. She also tried
to find the shoe in the puddle, but still no luck.
Back to school the girls went, one shoe down.
But then...
Mr Dungey appeared with Mr Drummond. They both offered to help and began searching for the
shoe. Mr Drummond tried to move the puddle water with a stick whilst Mr Dungey rolled up his
trouser legs and got in.
He searched and searched, but still no shoe.
Mr Dungey (aka Bear Grylls) and Mr Drummond took the seniors for a run. On the way back Rowan
also lost his shoe, but by this time it was getting dark. The junior and senior games sessions ended
with two shoes less than they had started with.
...
The next day, Bear Grylls was determined to find the shoe, so he borrowed two rakes and went 'down
to the woods today, where he was in for a big surprise'! He raked through the puddles to find the two
missing shoes, soggy and covered in mud.
Well done, Mr Dungey!
