CE UpdateG L E N DA H U G H E S

Hello all,

I am treating these Christmas wishes as a special thank you to the Greyhound Community.

My short time with Greyhound Racing New Zealand has already demonstrated to me what a passionate, resilient and energetic community we have. I know most of the industry saw this year as a time to consolidate and work with the new changes devolving from the Messara Report and the ongoing requirements that arose from the Hansen Report. We continue to face ongoing change with legislation now before parliament, the devolving of responsibilities to the codes, and the increased focus on animal welfare before, during and after our greyhounds’ careers.

I can see that the welfare reforms this year are still a lot to manage, and I would like to thank you for your recognition of how important this area is. We still need to work hard to ensure that we keep our social licence and we will work closely with the industry to ensure new standards are practical and understood.

Beyond all this, I can say that next year will continue to test us all but I believe we are all up for the challenge. Ongoing implementation of the Messara Report, a new Code funding agreement, a new international rights agreement and potentially new partners to negotiate with will all be on the cards for next year. and we’re going to get through it together. I’m looking forward to seeing you, your clubs and our industry succeed. I would like to thank all of you including our staff and board who have made my introduction to the inner workings and challenges of Greyhound Racing New Zealand a pleasure.

We have also faced many changes in Head Office. The manner in which you have welcomed and assisted our staff to get up to speed quickly and the way our staff have worked to ensure they can continue to deliver a high-quality service has made me very proud to be a part of this team.

I would also like to make a special mention of Dave MacAuley who stood down from the Board at these elections, for his dedication and tireless work - especially in our welfare and rehoming space. A big welcome to our new Board member Kevin Brady who also brings a wealth of experience to the table.

Finally, it’s important to note that the office will run a skeleton crew from midday 24 December through to 6 January. You’ll still be able to get a hold of us, but please understand that we will not have everyone in the office for that period.

As always, have a great Christmas and safe start to the new year.

Kind regards

Glenda HughesInterim Chief Executive

Pinny Mack delivering his Christchurch Casino New Zealand Cup victory

Racing Action WrapMack Cruises to his strong NZ Cup Victory

”Ecstatic; unbelievable,” was the initial reaction from Maramarua Forest conditioner Steve Clark after his charge Pinny Mack cruised to his easy pace making win in the nation’s richest greyhound race, the $125,000 Christchurch Casino New Zealand Cup.

The victory was always assured for Pinny Mack after he pinged away from the six trap from where he ran his quality race rivals off their paws. His freewheeling galloping action saw Pinny Mack completing his 520m assignment in 30.11s with the Group 1 event being run in steady rain.

Clark was in awe of Pinny Mack who nearly didn’t make it to the Addington 520m starting traps as he explains, “I knew he was right when leaving home, however he started vomiting just out of Wellington. I considered scratching Pinny but decided to carry on when he settled better.

“He really perked up during the stir up with the whistler they have on their lure. I guess I was more stunned with what he did – that was an amazing effort. Pinny is one hell of a tough greyhound.”

“I have to thank Dudley and Ben Parker (West Australian based owners) who have never questioned my racing decisions with Pinny. They have put no pressure on me at any stage since I’ve had him. Jimmy Lee has been a long time friend of mine in Perth – it was Jimmy who recommended to me to take Pinny.

“All of my owners have stood by me and for that I’m very grateful, while the top work that Shardae (Hunt) does at home allowed me to travel for the series. The only disappointment I had after the win was not being able to celebrate it upstairs afterwards.”

Clark sure did celebrate his second New Zealand Cup training success (Blitzing Mayhem won the 2014 edition) the following day at the Anglers Arms Tavern in Sefton during the traditional annual get together of greyhound industry participants.

It is one of greyhound racing’s greatest mysteries why the classy chaser Dyna Dave has yet to win a Group 1 race! Again, an elite title eluded the Craig Roberts prepared greyhound when he flew home late 1.25 lengths behind for his second placing – the same placing he occupied in last year’s New Zealand Cup final.

“Just hit the replay button for my comment – it’s the same as always after a Group 1 race for Dave. Again, he lacks a length of early pace which gets him into some early trouble. I thought he was huge in the way he brought it home” advised Roberts.

The Ray Adcock prepared Start The Show had led the chase after Pinny Mack and it was only within the shadows of the post that he yielded to the strong finish lodged by Dyna Dave when he cut back to third by a head margin. “I’m pleased he got some of the crumbs,” commented Adcock about his charge’s effort.

The Dave and Jean Fahey mentored Opawa Deal was rewarded with the NZ Breeders’ bonus payment by being the first New Zealand bred greyhound to finish in this Group 1 event. The sixth placing that this son of Fernando Bale and Opawa Jay Jay occupied, earnt the Breeders’ bonus for his breeders and owners, the Opawa Racing team who enjoyed a hugely successful evening when winning four races with their home-bred greyhounds.

Laagland’s didn’t live to see the outstanding results that the litter they bred has been producing. Their estate benefits from the Group 1 winning bonus for breeding the first New Zealand bred greyhound to finish in the Group 1 sprint.

It was a night under the stars for Cottam as she not only boxed away Buddy Boom, but she was at the lure pull up three races later to catch the NZ Cup winner Pinny Mack, therefore she handled both of the Group 1 winning greyhounds. “It’s still sinking in – it’s a surreal feeling,” she advised.

Buddy Sure is a Boom Sprinter

It was a very much anticipated clash between a pair of youngsters in the $35,000 The Fitz Sports Bar Galaxy Sprint. That’s precisely what occurred which saw the northern Te Kauwhata based Jared Udy and Denise Cottam trained Buddy Boom gamely holding off the strong late challenge lodged by the race favourite Bolty for Danial Lane.

It was an even break from the 295m traps in this Group 1 sprint for cash. Buddy Boom seized the race lead when heading into the turn, while the unbeaten (at that stage) Bolty was improving his field position after making a moderate start.

Buddy Boom held on gamely to land his 20th career win (from 28 races) when holding Bolty at bay by an ever decreasing head margin, clocking 17.17s for his dash. There was a further 1.75 lengths back to the Ray Adcock prepared Flora Dora in third place.

“I’m pinching myself as this win means everything for us. It’s an absolute magic result. We always knew that Buddy was a special greyhound, but wow this is phenomenal,” stated Udy, who added, ”he had his problems going into the series however he came good at the right time.”

“We have to thank Leo and Henny Laagland who bred Buddy Boom. I remember sitting in a paddock when he was eight months old with his litter mates and I picked him out.”

The Captain Coutts – La Cigale has turned into a sensational litter. It’s a crying shame that the

Quality New Zealand Cup Meeting Support Races

As usual it was an evening of magnificent greyhound racing hosted by the Christchurch GRC during their Christchurch Casino New Zealand Cup meeting.

The support card was absolutely superb where, including the two Group 1 finals, saw just under $240,000 in stake money being won.

Hot Platter continued the meeting feature race North Island based kennel domination when she stylishly prevailed in the feature traditional cup night $15,000 I Pave Concrete Sockburn Cup 732m staying event for Angela Turnwald who trains in Foxton.

She dictated the pace to her rivals when she returned 44s for her freewheeling gallop. Goldstar Sydney finished resolutely for her second placing when she ran down the Dave and Jean Fahey prepared Opawa Hilary over the concluding stages.

The $15,000 Avonhead Tavern Feature was the 520m New Zealand Cup consolation which fell to the Craig Roberts prepared Uthor Bale who finished solidly to cut back the pace setting Rivalries from the Dave and Jean Fahey kennels by 1.25 lengths when clocking 30.42s for his gallop. Diddilee produced a sound effort for Angela Turnwald when finishing third a further two lengths behind.

Versailles was on the reserves bench for the $35,000 The Fitz Sports Bar Galaxy Sprint final for his trainer Jason Dunn. Obviously, he didn’t make the Group 1 final, however he gained some compensation when he produced his strong 17.29s 295m sprint to take out the last race $10,000 Garrard’s Horse & Hounds Free For All in what was the Galaxy Sprint consolation.

He ran down the northerner Blitz ‘Em Rene who is prepared by the Galaxy Sprint winning trainers Jared Udy and Denise Cottam by 1.25 lengths.

Powerful Melbourne Cup Day Staying Victory

There were two Group 1 staying races contested in Australasia on Tuesday November 5. First up was the running of the rich 3200m Melbourne Cup at Flemington. Just over an hour later the canine stayers contested the $30,000 Accell Therapy Wanganui Distance over the 755m journey at the Hatrick Raceway.

Opawa Hilary jumped quickly into the race lead from the six trap. She was cruising in her work when rounding the first turn for her trainers Dave and Jean Fahey. Pushing up along the rail to get into a handy position was the Angela Turnwald prepared favoured contender Kamada Park.

Kamada Park took over the pace when coming up the home straight the first occasion with Opawa Hilary taking a sit in behind him. It was a bunched pack chasing further behind them. Kamada Park really stretched out when racing down the back straight and he looked set to land Group 1 glory when he led by around five lengths when approaching the final turn.

Entering the home straight Kamada Park “hit the wall” as commentator Mark Rosanowski summed up afterwards. Taking huge late strides and railing underneath was Opawa Hilary and she strongly punched through to snatch her Group 1 title by a short length, clocking 45.35s for her assignment.

Top Breeders dominate Hatrick & Manawatu NZRS wins

Two renowned breeders of quality greyhounds secured Breeders’ bonus dollars when greyhounds bred and raced by them annexed NZRS finals at the Hatrick and Manawatu Raceways last month.

First up it was the Lisa Cole trained Big Time Vince easily winning the Wanganui GRC hosted $7,500 NZRS Novice final.

After easily winning his 520m heat in 30.47s Big Time Vince then proceeded to demolish his rivals in the final by a convincing 5.5 length margin when using pace making tactics, clocking 30.39s.

Kamada Park gamely held second, holding a comfortable three length margin over a really bold Grunty Mama who indicated that her future racing forte is going to be over the longer race distances for her trainers Sue and Cor Blackburn.

This was a thoroughly deserved Group 1 victory for Opawa Hilary who is a member of the December 2016 whelped Barcia Bale and Opawa Michelle litter. She also picked up the $1,000 Breeders bonus attached to the race for his breeders and owners the Opawa Racing team.

“Opawa Hilary was very good in the final – she’s a real tough stayer so to win the race like she did was very satisfying,” commented Dave Fahey.

“It was a really nice win, although going down the back straight the last time I admit I was hoping that she would hold on for second with Kamada Park so far in front of her – I didn’t think she would catch that guy. It was a great result for all of us,” confirmed Opawa Racing’s manager Robin Wales about the recent New Zealand representative to the Australian Nationals Distance final in Perth.

It was the fifth career win in his 12th race day outing for this son of Barcia Bale and Romberg Lass for his owners Lisa Cole and Craig Rendle.

Big Time Elsa sure has made a promising start to her career as seen in the bold manner she chased after her kennelmate and she was rewarded with her second placing for her owner and breeder Brendon Cole.

Another kennelmate Bigtime Fred brought vast racing experience into this final as seen when he also bounced handy to the early pace from where he kicked on solidly to land his third placing a further 3.5 lengths behind.

Again, the placing that this half brother to the winner being out of Romberg Lass by Kilty Lad provided the Lisa Cole and Craig Rendle racing partnership with additional stake money. It also meant the result saw the Cole breeding operation scoop the entire Breeders bonus payments attached to this NZRS Novice race.

Three days later it was the Karen Walsh prepared Thrilling Stomp who delivered his powerful win in the Palmerston North held $8,500 NZRS Graduation final.

He was huge in the way he won his heat the previous week when he diverted out wide after jumping from the one trap. Yes, he was slow getting into stride in the final which saw another of the heat winners Thrilling Amie leading out from the five trap for her

conditioner Lisa Cole.

Thrilling Stomp powered up onto the pace when racing wide to chase the pacemaker around the turn. This son of Fernando Bale and Thrilling Ella extended strongly during the run home, coming away for his easy win by a 2.75 length margin, clocking 26.45s for his breeder and owner Gary Harding.

Big Time Amie (Fernando Bae – Sweet Rubyjane) kicked on stoutly to hold her second placing for Cole, while Bigtime Alfie (Surf Lorian – Elle Packer) finished solidly to secure his third placing another three lengths behind also for Cole.

Advisories

Attention All NZ Trainers with Australian Owners

It has been brought to the attention of GRNZ, that Australian based owners remain subject to the Australian Greyhound Re-Homing Policies, even when their Greyhounds are racing in New Zealand. When an Australian owned & whelped Greyhound has finished racing, their policies include mandatory requirements to make at least two formal applications to re-homing agencies before any other consideration. A PDF of the NSW policy can be found in the advisory section of our website.

A Reminder from the Racing Integrity Unit

In fairness to all Club’s and the connections of reserve greyhounds, trainers are reminded that every step is made to ensure that greyhounds engaged to race are injury-free prior to 7.30 am the morning of the race day.

There have been instances recently where Greyhounds are being late scratched after their pre-race veterinary check has revealed serious injuries that should have been identified prior to the scratching time.

Rehoming and Fees Update

As of 1st October, the GRNZ Great Mates Programme officially launched in all 3 rehoming kennel locations across the country (Levin, Cambridge and Rangiora).

Great Mates is now responsible for the assessment and retraining of greyhounds that are retiring as pets, and will be responsible for all greyhounds until they have been found a new home by one of our rehoming partners - GAP or Nightrave.

GRNZ has built kennel facilities in Levin, and has contracted kennels and staff in Cambridge and Rangiora to significantly increase our rehoming capacity. We will ultimately be able to rehome the retired greyhounds more quickly and reduce wait times for greyhounds coming into the programme.

A $60 entry fee will apply for each greyhound coming into the rehoming programme, and we will provide an all-inclusive service for the greyhound to ensure it has the best possible chance of finding the perfect new home. This includes:

De-sexingVet checksDental careTemperament assessment and behaviour modification as required done by trained kennel staffDogs that need extra training will receive specialised training from NightraveGreat Mates Prison Programme for some A reminder that dogs must be up to date with all vaccinations and registered with the council when entering into the rehoming programme; an $80 fee will apply for greyhound that do not meet either criteria and $160 if the dog does not meet both criteria, to cover these additional costs.

Since we started our transitional period in August, we have adopted more than 100 greyhounds into new homes. Our rehoming rates are continuing to increase now that we are fully operational.

We appreciate your patience in the transition and thank you for your support with participation in this programme, it is important we all ensure your greyhounds get a wonderful life after their racing career and go to good homes.
