FROM THE PRINCIPAL AND ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL Friendly reminder
Early dismissal at 1.30pm on the last day of school All students resume on Monday 1st February 2016
Dear Parents and Families Principal for a Day: Thank you Lily! Lily had a wonderful time in the office as Principal on Tuesday. She spent time completing some administrative tasks with her friends. She made an announcement reminding everyone to wear their hats and reapply their sunscreen. She sent emails to her family and her class. She had a sneak peak at the plans for our library. She had lunch in the office with her friends. She was on duty in the yard at lunchtime. After lunch Lily visited classrooms to remind students about wearing hats and nude food lunches . We then toured the school and inspected the grounds. Thank you for all your help Lily! Thank you Morning Tea for parents this morning. We are very fortunate to have daily support from our parent community. Parent assistance with excursions, camps, sport, classroom activities, bike education, working bees, Parent Club, the Fete, BFAC events, a range of fundraising activities, Garden Club, Kitchen Garden, Canteen, literacy helpers all have a common purpose. To make our school a wonderful place for our students. Thank you everyone. Our teachers value the partnership and greatly appreciate your support. Best wishes for the holiday season and we look forward to working with you in 2016. Religious Instruction (SRI) may only be delivered during lunchtime, or in the hour before or after school for a maximum of 30 minutes. Moving SRI to non-curriculum time strikes the balance between ensuring that SRI is still able to be delivered in schools where there is parent demand and available resources, and giving all children and young people full access to the full amount of curriculum delivery time, which is critical for Victoria as the Education State. Parents are advised that our SRI Instructors have let us know they are unable to continue next year, so at this stage there will be no Special Religious Instruction offered next year.
Maths Olympiad Success Thank you to Mr Peter Jarvis and congratulations to all students who took part in this year's Maths Olympiad, a maths problem solving competition available to primary and secondary students across Australia and New Zealand. Students were presented with their participation certificates last week and there were some terrific individual performances. In Year 5, Byron and Dean won the award for having the highest individual score. In Year 6, Sammy and Khalid finished in the top 20% and Joseph and Rory won the award for having the highest individual score and finished in the top 10% of all primary school students. This is a fantastic result and we are very proud of their achievements. Library Update The carpet and painting have been completed and the space has been reconfigured with some inner walls removed and a concertina door installed. Benches will hopefully be installed during the holidays. Thank you to Sarah Patterson and Geraldine O’Malley for all their work designing the interior to make it an exciting space for our students. They have come up with a few surprises for the students. The shelving will be reinstated and the book stock is being organised by Mrs Julia Jones. The library will reopen early in the new year. Whole School Working Bee Sunday 31st January 2016 Yes, we have already started planning! Parents and families are invited to come and join us for a working bee on the day prior to the students commencing in the new year. We will be tidying the grounds and completing any maintenance needed after the summer break. We hope you can join us from 9-11.30am including a sausage sizzle and tea and coffee.

LEVEL LOW DOWN
Year One In Year One we are all wondering where the year has gone? We only have three weeks of term to go. While our swimming program was on we had a little rest from Investigations, but this week we were back creating at the writing tables, making at the collage table and working together in the construction area. Over the last few weeks of term the students have the option to make Christmas craft during Investigations. If you have any left over Christmas cards or wrapping paper or anything you think could be useful, please send it to school with your child. Some of our favourite things include: Marley: “Making different stuff at the collage table” Andy: “Using bi-carb soda in our potions at the science table” Arthur: “The collage!”
Year Two There is a buzz of excitement in the air in Year Two as we complete our final few weeks of school before the holidays begin. Our classrooms are full of Christmas cheer and we have been preparing our voices for our school carols night next Wednesday 9th December at 6pm. Year Two students are able to wear red, green and white Christmas colours and they can wear singlets, shorts and thongs (weather dependent). Prior to the carols evening, our Centenary Journals and time capsule contents will be on display so come and see the Year Two contributions.
Foundation We are all ready and excited for our Prep Performance Night tonight. We have been practising every day to make sure our singing voices and dance moves are ready for the big show. Prep R and Prep L – please meet in your classroom at 5:45pm for a 6pm show. Prep T and Prep A – please meet in your classroom at 6:45pm for a 7pm show. Remember to have some dinner and a rest before you come and wear bright colourful clothes and comfortable shoes for dancing. A very big thank you to our Performing Arts teacher Caroline Rothberg and to Bronwyn Fitzgerald and Jodie Ewart for all their support. We are looking forward to our next step up day on Monday when we will head to Year 1 again. We are on the hunt for laundry powder scoops to support our math unit of capacity. Please drop any laundry scoops into the Prep classrooms ASAP. Many thanks!

Year Six In Year 6 we have been extremely busy. The students have been putting the final touches to their ERPs. On Tuesday morning we had our Year 6 Expo. Thank you to all the families that came and supported us. The students were excited presenting their video and demonstrating how they linked their interests to their learning intensions in Economics and Health.
The students have been completing their memory books. They have enjoyed sharing memories, stories and photos. They have been practicing their carol songs and looking forward to performing Wednesday night 9th November. We have also started getting ready for graduation. Please check with you child in regards to notices. The Year 6 students got notices in regards to graduation, Bike Ed and Lifesaving.
Year Three On Wednesday, Ryan from Supreme Incursions trained the Year 3s in a tabloid sports incursion. The active incursion allowed students to showcase and develop their sporting skills. Students were involved in a rotation of mini sports games that gave them the opportunity to practice the fundamental skills from a range of sports including football, soccer, basketball, netball, cricket, athletics, gymnastics and more. 3E - Wil: “I loved throwing the beanbags at the cans”
3AH - Luke: “I liked the Frisbee throwing because it was hard”
3F – Summer “I enjoyed having fun with all the activities”
3P – Savannah “My highlight was throwing the Frisbee in the hoop thing”
Year Four This week the Year 4 students developed their knowledge of how to improve their personal safety when riding a bike. It was great to see that families had prepared for the Bike Ed program in advance, making appropriate repairs and adjustments to bicycles and ensuring helmets fitted correctly and were of the satisfactory safety standard. With thanks to Mrs Sue Dale, the students experienced many riding skills including scanning using eyes and ears, use of hand signals and pulling over to the kerb and dismounting if unsure. The students learnt how to use their "bike brain" and "make the move" smoothly and safely. Thank you to the Year 4 parent helpers who assisted Mrs Dale with the implementation of the Bike Ed program. We wish to remind Year 4 families that the students will be displaying their term 4 learning at our Economics Expo next Thursday morning, 10th December, 8.30-9.30am in the year 4 learning space.
Year Five The Year 5 students are to be congratulated on their oral presentations at our Economics Expo last Thursday evening. It was terrific to see so many families attend the night and the feedback was very positive and encouraging. Here is what a few of our students had to say about the experience. “ It was a great experience. It was a good way to get better at public speaking and it was fun to present with a partner. It has given me more confidence to go for leadership roles in 2016.” Josh 5N “ The night had a really good vibe about it and everyone really enjoyed themselves.” David 5M “ The night went really smoothly and I loved working with a partner and showing our hard work to all of the parents. “ Olivia 5L “ I loved the night, it went really well. I enjoyed presenting and the PowerPoint presentations were very good. You could see that everyone worked really hard on them.” Julie 5L This week the students have commenced Bike Ed and are demonstrating terrific skills, resilience, responsibility and respect as we take them on road. We are all are looking forward to our Bike Hike to Bicentennial Park next Tuesday.

A WiseOnes History Unit Term 1, 2016
Meso-america
Life was very different 2000 and 1000 and 500 years ago in these societies. There was danger from volcanoes, enemies and even your own leaders. Being very good at music, dance or being beautiful was dangerous. What role did women have? How were children treated? What was their calendar like? Was their art beautiful? Learn to play Patolli, make a codex, make comparisons, express your ideas and meet others who have great ideas too. WiseOnes is for fast learners in years 1-6 at your school. Children need to qualify for this program. Please contact Claudine, the WiseOnes Manager for an assessment. Everyone says it’s fun to try-out.
