The Forum was attended by Years 5 and 6 students from Culcairn Public, St Joseph’s Culcairn, Holbrook Public School, St Patrick’s Holbrook and St Paul’s Henty. Nathan Fisher (Relieving Principal Holbrook Public School) and Craig Allibon (Principal Culcairn Public School) contributed hugely to the success of the day. Funds from the three associated Hospitals were greatly appreciated. The intention for the day was to give students insight into building resilience to cope with the adversities they may face throughout their lives. The two guest speakers were truly inspirational and had the 100 or more students absolutely engrossed with their life stories. Eliza Ault-Connell (from Albury) suffered meningococcal disease when she was 16 and among other complications, lost both her legs. She spoke of her amazingly positive attitude when coping with the blow she was dealt and her successes in wheelchair racing, personal training and becoming Mum to her three children. A truly inspiring individual. Bec Meyers from Culcairn spoke of the ‘wrong decision’ she made on her 18 th birthday in 2009 to go in a car driven by a person under the influence of alcohol. The car accident that resulted from this decision left her a paraplegic. Bec told us how she learnt to get on with her life, becoming fiercely independent and concentrating on one of the many sports she had always enjoyed-golf. She showed students her motorised vehicle which enables her to be upright and hit the golf ball with one arm. Also truly amazing. Following the guest speakers’ presentations, the students were lead through mindfulness and physical activities on the sports field by Matthew Dillon and Sarah Argus from the Bluearth Foundation. Representatives from AFL Southern NSW and Cricket NSW (Robbie Mackinlay) then involved the children in some skill-based activities. In between activities, the children were treated to a BBQ sausage lunch, supported by representatives from the schools’ P & C Associations. Everyone agreed the day was a huge success and believe the children would have gained a positive message on ‘building resilience’. ANGLICAN NEWS This Sunday at 9:30 we are having a special service of Confirmation where eight people will be publicly confirming their Christian faith before the Bishop. This will be a joyful celebration as we praise God for his kindness to us and celebrate those who are committing themselves to live as followers of Jesus. Our town Christmas Carols are going to be held on Sunday 16th December so please put that date on your calendar. Finally, James Coats recently announced that he will be finishing his time of ministry in Holbrook in late March. He and his family will be moving to Canberra where he will be doing some further study while working at a church. They are grateful for their time spent in Holbrook even as they look forward to what God has in store for them in the future.

MEN’S SHED We had a good day at the Corryong Shed last Thursday, some interesting topics were discussed, including the one at the forefront of the Men’s shed organisation that is health and social inclusion. Again some of us came away suffering from shed envy, they have a great set up over there with plenty of room for expansion. We also had the good fortune to win the raffle the prize being a constant pressure water pump We will be at the markets by the sub at the end of the month, the guys have been busy making the large and small planter boxes, we will also have some raised garden beds for sale. These are made from semi trailer mud guards and are great for growing spuds and root veggies in. We will also have some hand made items, bread boards, pizza or cheese boards, boot jacks, and gum boot stands for sale, and our range of refurbished preloved furniture.

PROBUS It was lovely to see visitors June Davis and Rosemary Hulm (hopefully new members!) as well as Robbie Mackinlay, Warren and Pam Smith at our meeting last month. It was with great sadness President Stewart announced the death of long time member, Shirley Morton. Our deepest sympathy to her family. Eunice Sadlowski was our Five Minute Speaker and read a short story she had written based on her experiences in post war England call The Wall. The story was delightful, very well written and read. Thank you Eunice! In General Business our upcoming Christmas Party at our November meeting was discussed and a motion to give the RS Club a donation of $200 for the use of their facilities was passed. Margaret Cottrell spoke of our enjoyable Albury trip earlier in the month. After morning tea, Robbie Mackinlay introduced Pam Smith. Robbie has had a long association with both Pam and her husband Warren through cricket. Pam entertained us by reading her entries from her diary which she wrote while she and Warren were the backup team for their son Bradley as he cycled from Perth to Sydney in 2016. The trip took him 17 days - quite amazing! Pam's telling of some of the adventures they encountered was terrific as well as very amusing. Their 'home' for the trip was the 'Lucky Roma', a motorhome which also caused some funny moments. Pam described the vastness of the Nullarbor and the hilarious characters they encountered. Bradley is a keen cyclist, living in the U.K. And cycles daily to and from work in Greenwich. Thank you Pam for this entertaining recount of what must have been a great experience. Next meeting Tuesday 27th November at 10:00 am in the RS Club. This will be followed by our Christmas lunch at $25 ahead. Names and Money to Margaret Cottrell ASAP please.

Community Radio in the Greater Hume 2GHR Community Radio aims to bring to listeners a wide variety of information and music, community events promotion as well as notices about local businesses and opportunities. This year we have spent some time making improvements to transmission equipment, with a few more changes to come. Our aim is to have a clearer voice in other centres such as Henty, Culcairn, Walla Walla etc. Our voice is readily heard along the Hume Highway. 96.7 2GHR is an organization run by volunteers and we are always looking for more volunteers! New programs, sports coverage- you name it. If you have a particular interest there will be others who will enjoy it - be it gardening, country music, films, books- the list is endless. No one is ‘thrown in at the deep end’ and you would be helped and trained until you are comfortable. Microphones have never been known to bite. The station’s annual general meeting is to be held at the studio this year, giving all members a chance to take a look around the studio and see how it all works. Come and see where it all happens on Wednesday 28th November at 7pm at the studio, rear of the old council chambers, 40 Young Street, Holbrook.

TENNIS The two Section 2 teams both recorded close wins last weekend to keep them up with the leading teams. The Gold team travelled to Henty and with a couple of younger players on court, the team won 68 games to 64 with the win being confirmed in the last sets with Will Plunkett and Jodie Parker winning 6/2 followed by Fletcher and Abby Parker winning 6/1 to secure the points. The Green team hosted table Top and in a high scoring match the Brookers won 77 to 71 games. Of note was another player from out Cookardinia way going down with injury in Fraser Parker. Fortunately Andrew Todd was able to step in and keep the scoreboard ticking over for the home team and with the match in the balance with the last sets on court Toddy and Laura Parker won 6/1 to give the Brookers the win. Sect 3 White had the bye and the Blue team received a forfeit. Sect 4 battled with Henty Red at the Holbrook courts and were no match for the visitors going down 88 to 45 games. Good to see a couple of new faces on court helping out in Fiona and Georgia Wragge and Issy Weaven. We hope to see more of the young ones on court and at the Wednesday evening hit up. One more than the Culcairn two team that finished with two wins. By the time that this goes to press, Holbrook and Culcairn Two will have played off in the semi-final. The winner of this game will play the winners of the pool one semi-final in the grand final. Win, lose or draw, this team deserves all the accolades that will be forthcoming. Don’t forget, the mini pennant kicks off again on the first weekend in December. You are again able to play your game on either the Saturday or the Sunday. Card to be in by 12-30 Sunday. So, make up a team of four and come and have a hit. Add each person’s handicap together and divide by eight to give you your team handicap. Good luck.

HOLBROOK PUBLIC SCHOOL The end of the year is fast approaching, but learning is still the main focus at Holbrook Public School. Another very busy fortnight has zipped by. The Combined Schools Resilience Day proved to be a great success. The Year 5 and 6 students attended, and were again great ambassadors for our school. There were a number of outstanding and inspirational speakers on the day, and they certainly made an impact on all the kids. Eliza Ault-Connell, who passed around her prosthetic legs to the audience, spoke about her challenges after contracting meningococcal disease. Bec Meyers spoke about the adversity she encountered and conquered after becoming a paraplegic. Her key message was ‘be the best you can be’. Matt and Sarah, from the Bluearth Foundation, conducted a session on wellbeing, mindfulness and relationships. The day concluded with sessions run by the AFL and Robbie Mackinlay from Cricket Australia. Thanks to Margot and Abby for assisting with the barbecue. A day full of learning and fun! Our Fundraiser for a Farmer was a huge accomplishment. Congratulations to all the kids in our school – they are amazing! Their generosity allowed us to donate 26 bales of hay and 11 500 litres of water to farmers affected by drought. They raised $770 by coming to school dressed as a farmer, filling a watering can with silver coins, and selling sausages in bread. Fruit tubes were also for sale. The whole school also enjoyed some ‘boot scooting’ for sport. Thank you to the SRC, and to parents and teachers who helped on the day. The Melbourne Cup Year 5 and 6 Race was again, an enormous success. Despite the race having to be postponed until Wednesday, due to a very heavy track, rain and some reluctant starters, the Year 5 and 6 ‘horses’, saddled with backpacks, sped off for a gallop twice around the oval. The eventual winner was Izak Schirmer (Horse number 12). Each horse was awarded a well-deserved fruit tube. We managed to raise $170 for our World Vision sponsored child. Well done, everyone! Remembrance Day was observed on Thursday November 8. Our school leaders led a very solemn and thoughtful service, and spoke about the importance of leading good and productive lives, so as to honour all those who served, died or were injured in all the conflicts in which Australia was involved. They also told the story of an Aboriginal soldier, named Charles Tednee Blackman, who served in WW1. Our School Captain, Amelia Pincott, is to be commended for her excellent speech, ‘What Remembrance Day Means to Me’, which she presented at the town’s remembrance service, on Sunday November 11 . She spoke with great aplomb, poise and real understanding. Amelia received a letter from the organisers, praising her delivery and efforts. We are really proud of you, Amelia. The annual Public Speaking Competition was held on Monday 12 and Tuesday 13 November. All children in the school, from Kinder to Year 6, presented a speech to their peers. Two from each year were chosen to represent their class. Monday saw the prepared speeches presented, and what an entertaining and varied lot they were! The impromptus were presented on Tuesday, again proving what talented and hardworking kids we have at our school. The results of the competition will be announced at Presentation Night. At the moment, the whole school is gearing up, or participating in, excursions. Year 3 and 4 are presently in Canberra accompanied by Miss Burton and Mrs Henderson. Year 5 and 6 head off to Melbourne for their biannual expedition. Miss Lavis and Mrs Wedge are leading this trip. Kinder, 1 and 2 are going to Wagga for a day of activities. It’s great to be a part of Holbrook Public School! Congratulations to Alice Hearn and Laycii Freund. Both girls competed at the NSW Athletics Championships in Sydney, on Wednesday 31 October. They competed in the 100m sprint for their age group and were placed 33rd overall. What an achievement!

ST PATRICKS SCHOOL Wow – what a hectic 2 weeks it has been at St Pats! Year 1 & 2: Years 1 & 2 have been enjoying regular visits to the local town library. This is giving each student the exciting opportunity to explore this wonderful community space and engage in a wider range of reading materials. The library staff are so welcoming and students enjoy borrowing books to take home and share with their families. At school students have been focusing on social skills with a particular emphasis this fortnight on “Be Safe, Have Fun”. This will lead onto other themes, which include “Play Fair, Show Care”, “Speaking to Please” and “Learn and Let Learn”. This is just another example of how students focus on the whole student, teaching social and life skills that will be carried by the children throughout their educational and life journeys. Teddy Bear’s Picnic: Kinder students have been busy making a post office for our Teddy Bears Picnic invitations to Years 1 & 2. They wrote invitations to each Year 1 and 2 student and posted these. On Wednesday students celebrated their Teddy Bear’s Picnic; making fairy bread (cut into halves), marshmallow and fruit kebabs (patterns) and a large platter of watermelon and grapes. All enjoyed the picnic together and talked about their favourite teddy/stuffed friend brought along to help share the occasion. Remembrance Day Commemorations: To commemorate the 100-year anniversary of the end of Wold War 1 St Pat’s was represented at the Holbrook town service at the Cenotaph by school captain Jed. Jed read a prayer “A Call to Peace”, a moving prayer inviting all to reflect on our role in a peaceful world. Jed was joined by Holbrook Public School captain Amelia who reflected in her own words on what Remembrance Day means to her. Former St Pats student Phoebe Plunkett completed the youth representation playing two moving songs on her bagpipes. We congratulate the community on this fine event and are thankful that our youth are given a memorable role to play in the ceremony. At school, we commemorated with our own school service. Jed lead the service as students placed hand-made poppies and observed a minute silence in reflective thought of those who have gone to war for our freedom. Canberra Excursion – Together with All Saints Tumbarumba and St Joseph’s Culcairn Stage 3 students ventured to our Nation’s Capital for three full days of touring, exploring, laughing and learning. The itinerary was jam-packed with experiences that highlighted the past (The War Memorial, Rose Garden at Old Parliament House), the present (Parliament House, Telstra Tower) and the future (Questacon). Students had the opportunity to be very “hands on” at many of the venues as well as experiencing the independence of being away from home and living in shared quarters for two nights. We thank our brave (and tired) teacher Mr John Carey for accompanying our students on this amazing opportunity. Real Talk: Stage 3 students were out and about again on Thursday with a trip to St Anne’s North Albury to participate in a Love & Life Presentation by “Real Talk”. This presentation explored making good choices, healthy relationships, self-worth, social, media and the importance of our bodies amongst other things using games, activities and discussion. Feedback from students is that the session was “awesome”.

BILLABONG

HIGH SCHOOL Activate Inclusion Sports Day On Friday 9 November the Multi Cat classes travelled to Wagga Wagga to participate in a range of sports activities. The sports were: AFL, Cricket, Goalball, Basketball and Futsal. The students represented Billabong High School very well with great participation and excellent behaviour. Goalball is a Paralympic sport played by athletes who are visually impaired. Students wore blindfolds and used their sense of hearing to hear the ball coming toward them. They then had to block the ball with their bodies by lying down in a horizontal position. In 2019, students at Billabong High School will have the opportunity to play Goalball. Goalball is a truly inclusive sport as all players must wear opaque eyeshades to ensure fair competition. SRC Melbourne Cup Day Despite the very welcomed rain on Tuesday, students participated in a number of activities on Melbourne Cup Day, organised by the SRC. Students came dressed in race-related costumes with prizes going to Tahlie Weston, Jasmin Patrick-Beale, Elijah Lieschke, Samuel Male, Emma Handley, Tayla Roulston, Sam Harrison and Flynt Trimble. Roll call groups decorated horses for their own best dressed competition. Unfortunately, the horses were unable to race due to a heavy track. This did not stop us from enjoying a sausage sizzle lunch with profits going in to the SRC funds for future projects.
