Bayside District Girls Football The Bayside district Girls Football Program commenced with a round robin event at Peterson Reserve last Thursday. Teams play with fifteen players a side on a smaller than usual ground. The weather forecast was for rain, hail and strong winds and the players set off determined to play well. In most cases this was the first time playing AFL football and they very quickly became familiar with the tackling and the mud. Lots of mud on one particular ground and as it turned out we played 3 of our seven games there. These games required some long kicking and moving the muddy ball on quickly when it hit the ground. On the drier grounds the girls were impressive with other skills, such as high marking, clean ball handling, handpassing and great running. With four wins out of seven games we have qualified to play the next round at Dendy Park on the 31st July. Many thanks to the parents that braved the bracing breeze and cheered on our girls during a energy sapping day that showed the resilient nature of our students.

LEVEL LOW DOWN Prep

The Preps enjoyed their very first Japan/Australia Day yesterday. There were so many great costumes! We enjoyed seeing Wild Action (The zoo comes to you) again at the special morning assembly with some of our old friends Bumpy Stumpy the lizard and Cackles the Kookaburra. After recess the Preps explored a Japanese Ninja algorithm dance, Japanese Yen and Australian dollars as well as learning the words to Advance Australia Fair. The Japanese Taiko drumming at the end of the day made us all want to dance! A very big thank you to Gall Sensei for organising another exciting day for us. Arigatou Gall Sensei!

Year One What an exciting week we’ve had in Year One. Japanese Australia Day was the highlight of

our week. We were so proud to sing ‘Waltzing Matilda’ to our Japanese visitors as well as the

entire school community. We’ve been practising really hard. We did a few special activities to celebrate

the day. In 1OD’s room we made “Japanese Lanterns” that the Japanese people use in a special

festival called ‘Bon Festival’. In 1R’s room we made Japanese “Coy Fish Kites” to celebrate Children’s

Day and in 1GP’s room we drew traditional “Aboriginal Dot Drawings”. We’d love to thank

Sensei Gall for organising Japanese Australia Day. We learnt a lot about Japan and Australia

plus it was so much fun!

Year Two

The Year 2 students were all dressed up and ready for a brilliant Japanese/Australia Day! They participated in some really fun activities. Karaoke The children learnt that karaoke began in Japan about 30 years ago in a small town called Kobe. They also learnt that the word karaoke means ‘empty orchestra’. They had a great time singing their favourite tunes like ‘Que Sera’, ‘Let It Go’ and ‘Happy’. “In my opinion this was the best activity! I loved singing ‘Let It Go’!” Savannah 2C “Karaoke is really popular in Japan. I loved using the microphone to sing. Archie 2M

Sumo Wrestling The children learnt all about Sumo Wrestling with Miss Cooper! “Sumo Wrestling was so funny to watch!” Ella 2K “We learnt how a Sumo wrestler gets so big! They eat a lot of bad food!” Skye 2L

Aboriginal Dot Painting Before the children started painting they went out into the yard to find a stick to use instead of a paintbrush. They carefully painted boomerangs and strips of paper. “We only used white, black, orange and red paint. They are the Aboriginal colours” Caitlyn 2C “I really enjoyed using the sticks because you could make really small dots and patterns” Jasmine 2L “It’s not easy to paint animals in dots!” Sofia N 2M

Meanwhile in Year 4, students have been travelling back in time to immerse themselves in the history of music and dance. Be there next Tuesday (29th July) at 6pm for parents of students in 4P and 4M and 7pm for parents of students in 4F and 4B to see everything they’ve learned. Yesterday students also celebrated Japanese and Australian culture by participating in a number of traditional activities. They were seen hurling gum boots, creating indigenous Australian art and singing karaoke like there was no-one watching. What a fantastic day! Over the last couple of weeks students have also been practising many athletic events for the big day (Monday 18th August). Mark the date down in your calendar because the carnival cannot happen without lots of parent assistance.

Year Five Origami cameras and cranes, Aussie beach culture and Nipper’s games, and aboriginal inspired dot painting were just a few of the activities our students enjoyed during Japan-Australia day on Wednesday. Congratulations to everyone for making the effort to come dressed up and get involved in the spirit of sharing our school with our Minato-Ku visitors. We’ve all laughed out loud viewing Michael Rosen’s animated poetry and responded thoughtfully to Shel Silverstein’s ‘Listen To the Mustn’ts’. We are all realising the power of poetry – its ability to awaken the senses, connect us to others, and lead us to think, as required by its use of the language of metaphor. We also launched our subject focus Economics and all Year 5 students attended StartSmart – an engaging and fun workshop to equip students with the confidence and competence to make smart decisions about money. We learned about how each student has the potential to earn through chores, neighbourhood jobs, selling and trading, and small businesses. Students also explored the importance of saving goals and how this supports us to make more informed spending decisions.

Year Six Konnichiwa. We have enjoyed our experiences with the visiting Japanese students and they have had great fun introducing themselves and showing us where they live using Google maps. Students participated in rotations involving cooking and Aussie phrases and slang. Next week our students will be attending a performance of The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe at Mentone Girls’ Grammar School.

Year Three So far this term, Year 3’s have revised and modified our Classroom Norms, written individual

term goals and discussed personal interests which will be further explored throughout the

Educational Research Project (ERP) process.

Our focus in Numeracy at the moment is multiplication and we have been very busy learning our

times tables and the strategies and mathematical thinking involved in this process.

3AH are extremely happy to have a lovely new student in their grade ‘Aye Chaiyakham’. Aye has

moved here from Thailand and has settled in well. Welcome to Beaumaris Primary School Aye!

These are the Classroom Norms of 3AH
