FROM THE DESK OF FATHER ANDREWMy Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

January 6th marks the (major) feast day of the Baptism of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on the ecclesiastical calendar. This year, 2013,

the 6th falls on a Sunday and thus on Sunday, January 6, 2013 we will celebrate that major feast day. We have several events planned for that weekend and for that day specifically. We have an all day Epiphany Cross Dive Youth Retreat planned for Saturday, January 5th; and the divine

Please consult this Newsletter (and past Newsletters) for more information regarding these events, or call the church office.

The word Epiphany / Theophany means God revealing Himself to man. From Old Testament accounts we see there that God revealed Himself many times in many

different ways, but not fully because God the Father cannot be seen (Ex. 33:20-23; John 1:1-28). This theme can be found in the New Testament as well and from the Gospel of Matthew we read about God the Son (Jesus) being baptized in the river Jordan; about God the Holy Spirit descending upon Him in the form of a dove; and we hear the voice of God the Father (Matt. 3:12-17). The following hymn of the Church, chanted during the service of the Blessing of the Waters, puts these spiritual Biblical truths to song: From above you appeared today, to

the earth’s people, and your light, O Lord, has been marked upon us, who in true knowledge we sing to you: You came, You appeared, O Light unapproachable. Happy New Year2013

2 THE SHEPHERD • JANUARY 2013 • SAINT SPYRIDON GREEK OR THODOX CHURCH OF SAN DIEGO

FROM THE PRESIDENT OF THE PARISH COUNCIL

Christ is Born! Glorify Him!

Happy New Year everyone! I hope and pray God brings all of us, peace, good health, prosperity and a renewed sense of love for our beloved St. Spyridon Greek Orthodox Church. I look forward to worshipping the Vesperal Liturgy of St. Basil the Great with many of you on December 31st beginning at 6 PM. I cannot think of a better way to end/start the New Year than to thank God for all the Blessings he has bestowed on each and every one of us.

I would like to thank all of you for the opportunity to serve as your Parish Council President for 2012. A special thank you to my beautiful wife Stephanie for all the love and support these past two years while I led this very important Church ministry. I also want to thank the Parish Council members who like me have terms that ended in 2012: Francesca Captain, Jim Gilpin, Ken Kleinhenz, Vlassi Kouris, Anthony Kyriakidis, Jeff Mamalakis and Stephen Thiros. Please join me in personally thanking these seven dedicated parishioners for working so hard as council members (especially Francesca Captain, Vlassi Kouris and Anthony Kyriakidis who are leaving the parish council – you will all be missed very much) and pray that God continues to give them good health and allows them to continue to serve the Church in the capacity to which they see fit.

I am thrilled to welcome the newly elected parish council members for 2013. They are: Jim Gilpin, Ken Kleinhenz, Diane Leffas-Lopes, Jeff Mamalakis, Bill Navrides and Stephen Thiros. These parishioners will join Art Balourdas, Ben De La Riva, Dino Dougenis, John Kalas, Julie Karagianides, Jim Leventis and Spero Tzathas as your 2013 board members. Once the election results are ratified by his Eminence Metropolitan Gerasimos the 2013 Officers will be elected by the Parish Council members. Please pray for your 2013 Parish Council as they continue to work hard to carry out their ministry to the Church. We ask for your continued support throughout the coming year.

A new way to raise funds for our GOYA took place last month on December 7-8th. You are all familiar with the “December Nights” that takes place in Balboa Park every year. Parish Council Member Ken Kleinhenz thought “why not rent out the Church parking lot for two nights have the GOYA members help and receive all the proceeds.” I am happy to report that $1,200 was received for St. Spyridon’s GOYA through the hard work of many during the December Nights celebration. Thank you to Ken Kleinhenz and ALL who helped on this unique fundraising project.

Did you attend the December 12th Divine Liturgy and Feast Day Luncheon for our beloved St. Spyridon? A huge thank you to Julie Karagianides, Jannie Gallanis and Thomas Dinas for preparing the delicious meal for over 150 of us and to Themis Gallanis for the Legacy and Gift Planning presentation. While

I am thanking parishioners, it is my honor and privilege to once again thank one of you for stepping up to lead a ministry without being asked. This time I am talking about Julie Dennis who will be in charge of the Toddler group at our Church. Thank you Julie for seeing a need and filling it.

The Metropolis Clergy- Laity conference will take place on February 25th and 26th at St. Nicholas Ranch & Retreat Center. Parishioners voted to attend at the December 2nd General Assembly were Vlassi Kouris and Spero Tzathas. Vlassi and Spero will join Father Andrew and the Parish Council President for 2013 as our representatives. Vlassi and Spero will give a recap of the retreat at the March 17th Spring General Assembly.

For those of you that attended the December 2nd General Assembly meeting you heard about the formation of a new committee called the Transportation Committee. The committee consists of co-chairs Vlassi Kouris and Spero Tzathas and members Jim Leventis and Diane Leffas-Lopes. This group will be overseeing the implementation of Church van(s) per the Niki Moises Trust – if you recall Mrs. Moises so generously left the Church the vast majority of her estate and designated $70,000 for the purchase of van(s).

Lastly, it is not too late to join us for the 35th Annual Epiphany Cross Dive and Luncheon Celebration on Sunday, January 6, 2013. Pre-paid reservations are a must and need to reach the Church office by January 2nd. Wouldn’t you join us for this beautiful celebration as we break bread with our fellow Orthodox Christians from Southern California this year as we finish off the GOYA Epiphany retreat?

In closing, I ask you to please check the website and your monthly newsletter for all the activities and services taking place in 2013. There are so many active ministries at our Church and I hope and pray you take advantage of these wonderful opportunities.

I look forward to worshipping with you and your families in Church on Sunday mornings.

In Christ’s holy name, Bill Navrides

their Christian walk, today and every day. Thus, we too have been marked and are continually being marked by the Holy Spirit, initially through our Baptisms and our Chrismations; and continually as we participate in the Sacramental Life of the Church, which includes the Blessing of the Waters.

End Note: As a reminder, and as is customary to our ancient Orthodox Christian faith, I will begin blessing homes starting Monday, January 7, 2013 and will need to end before the season of the Triodion which begins on Sunday, February 24, 2013. One major

reason/purpose for the blessing of your home or place of business can be found within the above hymn: The priest comes to mark your home or business as a Christian place, a place where Christ dwells; thus, seeking God’s blessing, guidance, protection and illumination.

For those who would like their home or place of business blessed during the season of Epiphany please call the church office.

Dear Friends,

We are sending our deepest gratitude to all. Thank you so much for prayers and supporting “our” George. The unbelievable love and support given by our community truly helped heal our child. He gained strength from the out pouring of love given by all. It’s truly heartwarming when we look back at all the cards, gifts posters, banners and visits... Please believe us when we say... you all of had a hand in getting our child ready for battle and overall coming out victorious. A great lesson was learned by George and my entire family... to take life one day at a time and actually stop and enjoy the gifts of every single day and those around you.

George is cancer free!

May God bless you all this Christmas Season. And forever we will be extremely humbled, appreciative and blessed to live in such an amazing, hardworking, stand behind you, we fight as one, community.

With much love and many thanks,

PHILOPTOCHOS NEWS ΝΕΑ ΤΗΣ ΦΙΛΟΠΤΩΧΟΥ

New Year Blessings Father Andrew, Brothers, and Sisters of Philoptochos.

As always, we take this time to look back at the year behind us and the year ahead, with great anticipation as to what will come. We carry the lessons of the past with us and look confidently forward, secure in the knowledge that we are Orthodox Christians. Together, we demonstrate our confidence in the future and our solidarity as a philanthropic organization. Each day brings new challenges and each day we meet these challenges with grit and zeal, and with the spiritual guidance of our Father.

And so as we begin a new year, we do so with hope. This year like every one, will bring obstacles and opportunities. Each challenge brings us together and each accomplishment makes us stronger. We can indeed achieve anything that we put our minds to as we work together to lift Philoptochos to ever greater heights. I am certain that this coming year will only bring greater glory to our mission as Philoptochos. So, as this New Year begins, let us wish each other love and happiness in the coming year.

150 Ladies and Gentlemen joined together on Saturday, December 1st to celebrate Christmas with our sister chapter St. Helen’s Philoptochos. Our appreciation goes to luncheon chairs Marina Dimas, Eleni Vartelas, Christina Vassiliadis, Alexia Anas, and Angie Georggin. Bravo!

Father Andrew hosted Archimandrite Apostolos, and 7 concelebrant priests during the paramoni St. Spyridon Feast Day Vespers. Philoptochos offered a delicious Lenten Reception immediately following Vespers in the Cypress Room. Our congratulations and appreciation go to chairwoman Ioanna Capetanakis.

Each Christmas and Easter Philoptochos remembers 35 of our home bound parishioners. We encourage each of you to participate in this ministry by visiting one of our home bound parishioners and deliver the Philoptochos offering. You can make a big difference in someone’s life. This Christmas our special parishioners received beautiful hand crafted Christmas swags offered by Alexia and Paul Anas. Our appreciation for your dedication and generosity to this long time Philoptochos tradition.

At the time of this submission, the chapter is joyfully preparing to host 150 foster children, foster families, San Diego Youth Services staff, and volunteers for the heartwarming 3rd annual Philoptochos’ Angels Christmas. Stand by for news and photos in next month’s community newsletter.

Please join Philoptochos on:

• Sunday, January 13th for the fond tradition of Cutting of the Vasilopita, in support of St. Basil’s Academy home for children.

• Sunday, January 20th Philoptochos photo shoot for the 75th anniversary DVD.

We still need photos of the following: the old church, founding members, and past presidents.

Last Call for Recipes!!! All recipes must be submitted by December 31st for inclusion in the 75th Anniversary Commemorative Cookbook!! Please spend some time over the holidays looking thru your family recipes and share them with us! This is a wonderful time of year to reflect and to remember all the great cooks in your family!! Let’s honor them by including them in our Anthousa cookbook!! Recipes can be submitted to Stella at [email protected] or faxed to (858) 565-4188.
