ONE TO ONE
Volunteers through kindness paint the community
they want to live in.
Through your gift of time and
caring you are all painting
beautiful communities.
Thank you for sharing your love of
reading. It is an everlasting gift.
ONE TO ONE Volunteer Appreciation Tea
Once again ONE TO ONE board members and staff
were pleased to honour our dedicated volunteers on
April 17th at our Annual Volunteer Appreciation Tea
at beautiful Hycroft Manor.
Pamela Dawson shared some inspiring thoughts on
the impact that you, our volunteers, have on the
young minds of students they tutor. Our new video,
The Power of ONE TO ONE, was shown before
hearing Kathryn Shoemaker, award winning
illustrator and author, describe the process of
illustrating books. Kathryn explained the differences between story books and books with
illustrations in them. She brought some of her illustrations and demonstrated how the
drawings were used in books to set the mood or to go between current and imaginary
times. Kathryn answered questions after further explaining the research involved and the
relationship between author, illustrator and publisher.
Everyone enjoyed this very entertaining speaker and came away with a deeper
understanding of the art of weaving story and illustration together in the books we love. A
lucky few went home with copies of Kathryn’s book, A Telling Time, original framed
scratchboard illustrations, as well as hockey tickets and a Cirque du Soleil gift bag.
A Big Thank You to…
The Secret Garden Tea Company for donating sandwiches, scones and sweets to our tea
and Desjardins Financial Security and Kathryn Shoemaker for donating door prizes.

ONE TO ONE In-Service Training Session
February 23 2013
One Size Does Not Fit All!
Over 50 enthusiastic volunteers came away with ideas and tips for getting the “right
fit” for English Language Learners (ELL), disengaged, and shy students. The session
focused on understanding why children disengage from reading. Linda O’Reilly and
Susan Williamson shared communication tips such as allowing students additional
time to collect their thoughts and structure their answers, as well as sitting face to
face when you’re speaking with ELL learners. Repetition is also an important tool.
Volunteers also learned about Reader’s Theatre and had the chance to practice on
several scripts.
Volunteers found the session invigorating. One tutor said about the session: “So
many great ideas. I just wish I could rush out to tutor the kids this afternoon!”
If you weren’t able to attend but would like copies of the handouts, please visit our website www.one-to-one.ca
and click on Volunteer and then Tutor Support to download the handouts.

Making a Difference
“How do I make a difference?” This is a question we often ask of
ourselves. To help answer this question I’d like to use an idea of Charles
Schulz*, the creator of the 'Peanuts' comic strip.
Here’s a quick mental test:
1. Name the five wealthiest people in the world.
2. Name the last five Heisman Trophy winners.
3. Name ten people who have won the Nobel or Pulitzer Prize.
4. Name the last half dozen Academy Award winners for best actor.
How did you do?
Here are some other questions:
List a few teachers or mentors who aided your journey through school.
Name three friends who have helped you through a difficult time.
Think of 6 people who have made you feel appreciated and special!
Think of five people you enjoy spending time with.
Name five people who have taught you something worthwhile.
Most people find the second set of questions a lot easier to answer and
this is why. An important aspect of how brains work is that our brains
remember what touches us emotionally. The people who make a
difference in our lives are not the ones with the most credentials...the
most money...or the most awards. They simply are the ones who care the
most; the ones who are there. You can make a difference by touching
another’s life with the gift of caring and time.
ONE TO ONE volunteers do this by touching the lives of the students they
tutor.
