Issue # 20 August 2016 As MALC reflects on the activities over the past year, the realization dawns on how much work has been done and how much more work needs to be done. Pakistan continues its work in healthcare to control Leprosy, TB and Blindness, and MALC has contributed in no small measure to minimize their adverse effects. In 2015 alone, MALC admitted 11,054 TB patients with 3,640 cases being sputum positive. 165,772 patients were treated for blinding conditions and among them 52,397 were in danger of losing their eyesight. With Leprosy, the situation is also alarming. 446 new cases were identified and almost 57% of these came from Sindh! These statistics are a cause for concern. However, we are fortunate enough to have partners who support us wholeheartedly in our attempt to provide FREE OF CHARGE services to bring relief to Leprosy and TB patients and also to those suffering from blindness. With the volatile security situation still prevailing in most parts of the country, MALC still manages to continue its activities. The hope is that the maximum number of beneficiaries are able to benefit from our services. Reflections from…

Location: Orangi Centre, Karachi

Individual: Mohammad Mujib*

Mohammad Mujib is a Bangladeshi immigrant, settled in Karachi, who has

been a Leprosy patient for a long time. At present he is living alone because

he is divorced. His wife left him after she came to know of his Leprosy

complications and took their three sons along with her.

Mujib got married to his wife, Haseena*, after undergoing MDR-Treatment.

She was unaware that her husband had Leprosy and lived without this

knowledge until Mujib started suffering from post-Leprosy complications

which were recurring. Haseena now lives in Orangi with her 3 sons and have

completely cut off contact with Mujib. Mujib now sells plastic bags to earn a

meager income of Rs. 250/- per day. He sells bags in the markets of Paaposh

and Haryana, which are located around MALC’s Orangi Centre. His business

is primarily done on foot, because he felt uncomfortable using a bicycle to

travel from one market to another. This is the only job that he has ever known

and with his condition, it seems the most appropriate. The Orangi Centre

treats him for his condition and also provides him with counseling so that he

may improve his life.

After talking to him, he had this lesson to share with us: Never make the

mistake of not disclosing your medical conditions before you get married. It

will harm the relationship and cause mental trauma if found out later.
