HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERYBODY I would like to take this opportunity to welcome everyone back to Norwood after the Christmas holiday and I hope that everybody enjoyed the snow, which I promised in the last newsletter. The fact that it came on the the evening we broke up from school and disappeared before we came back was ideal for us as a school. I would like to thank everyone for their cards and warm wishes and trust 2011 will be an exciting, rewarding and happy one for us all at Norwood. I was delighted to see photographs of our infant Christmas performances in the local press over the holiday and once again would like to thank all the children and staff for their tremendous hard work in putting on such wonderful events. The Spring term is always the most rewarding in terms of the progress children make, as they are firmly settled in their classes, understand the routines and know what is expected of them in each subject and their behaviour and attitude. Our building work on the new After School Club extension and the kitchen continues to progress extremely well and I will have more up-to-date news on the scheduled completion in the next week or so. Finally I would like to wish everyone at Norwood a wonderful 2011 and hope that all New Year’s resolutions haven’t been broken yet. INSET DAY The final INSET day for staff training has been allocated as Friday 11th February, so school will close for February half-term on Thursday 10th February at 3.15 pm. AWARD FOR NORWOOD In recognition of the improvements we have made in the ‘basic skills’ of English and Maths, Norwood has recently been awarded the Quality Mark for Primary Schools. We received a visit from three external assessors, who evaluated our provision, practice and performance and assessed our recent improvements in ’basic skills’. The 10 key elements of the Quality Mark were analysed and assessed after discussions with staff, pupils and parents and we are delighted to report that they were very impressed with the school and the progress that has been made. Congratulations to everybody on this special award! Excellent Attendance Congratulations to the 270 children who received excellent attendance certificates for having attended school at least 95% of the time in the Autumn term. We are pleased to report that 92 children have 100% attendance so far and are on their way to the special 100% badge awarded at the end of the school year. Hot Dinners Due to the continuing building work in the kitchen, we are still unable to offer hot dinners to pupils or staff. We will keep you updated with information and let you know as soon as possible of the proposed date for the return of hot dinners. CLUBS

Q. What do you do in your spare time?A. I love to read, listen to music and spend time with my

family.

Q. What made you want to be a Governor at Norwood?

A. I was ready to challenge myself and do something I had never done before.

Q. Has any of your family attended Norwood?A. Both my brothers attended Norwood, but it was before it

moved to Norwood Crescent.

Q. How much time is taken up by being a Governor?A. There are about 3 or 4 full meetings and smaller committee meetings per year, but there is a lot of reading to do before

each meeting.

TissuesWhenever possible please send your child to school with a packet of

tissues.

This will encourage good practice when they catch their sneeze in a tissue,

and then bin the tissue when they have used it and so kill the germs.

Thank you.

After the wonderful

success of the first Christmas Craft morning

last year we weredelighted to run it again

and it will now become an

annual and anticipated event.

Family members were able

to join their children to

create festive items from recycled materials.

Thank you to everyone

who made the morning the

success it was.

Some of the comments from the family members

who joined their children

were...

“It was tremendous to see the children so engrossed

in the activity.”

“Fabulous time, gone

home sticky and sweet.”

“Very good morning, very

relaxing, felt like a child again.”

“Fantastic, as last year! My

children loved it. Thank

you for all your hard work.”

Remember to save all your

Christmas sweet wrappers, cards and wrapping paper and

send them into school for next year’s event.
