Dear Parents, Staff and the Quairading Community, We had a special guest in the school yesterday. Mr Lewis Jetta, of West Coast Eagles fame, came to speak with the children for an hour, and then spent an hour with community, family and friends. Lewis was a fantastic guest speaker, modest and gracious – our favourite value! He spoke about the support of his family (his Mum, Dad and brother came with him), the importance of school, staying focussed and relaxed through meditation and the hard work required to succeed – on top of talent and skill. Afterwards he spent some time on the oval playing kick to kick with some of the children, which was a great opportunity for our kids. Thankyou to Lewis for his support of our children and thankyou very much to Mr Colbung and his family for arranging the visit, it was a very special day.
Our year 2/3 assembly on Friday was lovely. Our 2/3s presented a play about heroes and the message was perfect – you can be a hero for lots of different reasons – you don’t need super powers! Their heroes were those who could help with Maths homework! Brilliant! We also heard some stories entitled ‘The day I woke up as my Mum!’ which were very entertaining (and enlightening) and finally we heard a 5 times tables song! Thankyou Mrs Squiers and Mrs Gelmi for helping the children present their items and thankyou to the 2/3 class for their clear elocution and enthusiastic presentation.
Congratulations to Matilda Gelmi of year 4 who will be eligible to nominate for participation in PEAC in 2019. We wish her all the very best with the program.
The School Improvement Program is moving along successfully; the plan was submitted recently for approval as scheduled. Members of our Aboriginal Cultural Standards Framework Committee had the opportunity to meet with Ms Paulina Motlop, Director Aboriginal Education Teaching and Learning and Mr Kevin O’Keefe, Principal Advisor, Aboriginal Education, as well as others from the Education Department and the community. It was a positive meeting and Kevin will be coming back to Quairading on the 7
th of November to meet with staff. Early in 2019 there
will be further workshops to which our community groups will be invited. In the meantime, communication practices have been stepped up throughout the school and I have a list of tasks to be completed this term and prior to the beginning of the next school year. Our parent and staff surveys have been collected and returned and School Council will be communicating the survey results and subsequent action plan to parents and the community. On Saturday 13th October staff met to begin developing the school’s Strategic Plan 2019-2021 and have continued to work on that and targets for 2019 in their own time after school. It is a wonderful reflection of their commitment that our staff are willing to meet out of hours to complete these school planning tasks.
Our whole school NAPLAN results have been delivered and are positive across the board. There are no red flags in
any areas tested. Again, our year 3 results come in higher than expected in all literacy areas, our year 7 results are
higher than expected in writing and spelling and our year 9 results are higher than expected in spelling, grammar
and punctuation. All other results are as the system expects. Individually, we have success stories with some
students making great progress. Congratulations to our students on their performance as a whole and to staff for
their efforts in preparing children for NAPLAN.
Aahlia Faltyn and Jaylene George, our representatives on the Wheatbelt Youth Council, have negotiated with Mr Curtin and the Youth Centre to refurbish an ‘outdoor bench’ and place in the main street in support of the purple ribbon movement – raising awareness of domestic violence against women. The Council is also lodging an application for funding to support a 12 month program of developing relationships between the police, the school and the youth centre. It consists of four activities where the police profile will be advanced through fun, non-threatening activities. It also dovetails into the ‘Stop It At The Start’ Domestic Violence campaign that has recently launched in WA which I am proud for our student representatives to support. Term four is traditionally the term that gets faster and faster and this one will be no exception. We have several excursions in the pipeline and some sporting activities. Keep an eye out for the permission slips as we will be looking for parent support for a couple of them – umpiring and scoring cricket will be one! We have two weeks of swimming lessons in weeks 7&8 and of course the usual round of end of year events, graduations and the awards day on Tuesday the 11
th of December, 9-11am.
The Wheatbelt Ball is coming up on the 9th of November. The Wheatbelt Ball is a little different to the traditional
QDHS Ball that many parents would remember. We have never hosted the Wheatbelt Ball before and I am excited that we have the opportunity this year. It is an event that is designed to cater for secondary students from across the Wheatbelt. It is our first effort at hosting the Wheatbelt Ball and as we see benefits for the school and community, we would like it to be a successful and memorable event that will lead to future bookings and hosting. To give you an idea of how the evening runs, the ball will be in the main hall. The hall will be set up with a dancing area and tables, at which the students will sit, eat and rest. The ball ticket includes a sophisticated style meal with entrée, main and sweets that will be served buffet style in the lesser hall. Mr Curtin and the students are at the later stages of planning and I look forward to a successful event for them.
Very initial planning has begun for camp 2019. As set in 2017 we have a biannual camp for years 5&6. Our 2019 camp will be in term three and Albany is the exciting and educational destination. As is always the case, camp brings out the best in children, staff and parents. The children will have a blast, staff involved will be generous in their planning, preparation and time and parents will be generous in their support for the school and the children. When school begins in 2019, we will be discussing with parents different options for assisting the children fund the camp.
Year 5 students have received home some information about the Gifted and Talented programs the Department of Education provides in various schools around the state. As a school we have had reasonable success in our students accessing these programs, so I urge parents to consider the assessment process, regardless if you have other plans. Should a child be selected, it merely broadens your options.
Planning for 2019 continues and as such, I can outline our class structures for 2019. They are as follows: K&P, 1&2, 3&4, 5&6, 7&8 and 9&10. Further information regarding staffing will be provided later in the term. New flower beds in the quadrangle have been installed (thanks Digging Docker) and we have some lovely greenery installed (thanks Donna Bunce). The beds will have reticulation installed (thanks Pete) and will soon be up and running to beautify the entry to the school. The funds expended here include some cash left over from the Quid for the Quad fundraiser (thanks to our P&C and community.) Our Kindy Orientation is coming up. Mrs Kerr has a meeting with 2019 Kindy parents on the 21
st of November
then the orientation sessions for the children begin the following day – 22nd
November. They run for three weeks with the last session taking place on the 6
th of December. The prospective students will be immersed into the
Kindy experience for three 90 minute sessions to increase comfort and security when they begin in 2019. The parents will have an informative meeting with Abby, going through the handbook, coping with a new school student and hints and tips about making the most of your child’s educational experience in Kindy. What a great way to start your schooling at Quairading DHS. Our AIEO Miss Kellie Hansen is taking some leave and will be away from school until mid 2019. Mr Jason Col-bung is stepping up to full time in her absence. We wish Kellie all the best for her leave. And finally, with the most exciting news of the week, Miss Taryn White and Mr Bond are engaged! This is lovely
news and we wish the happy couple all the very best for their future together!

Project Manager Report The staff at Quairading District High School have worked tirelessly over the past three months to collaboratively develop a School Improvement Plan that addresses the actions for improvements stated in the school review. Each of the three committees have drawn on their strengths and passions to form plans that are robust, sustainable and have momentum. The QSpirit Committee have developed a detailed plan to improve the image and reputation of the school. They will focus on strengthening partnerships with community subgroups and will be asking community members to provide feedback and suggestions in this area in the near future. The QSpirit committee have also blueprinted the steps the school is to take to ensure successful staff collaboration and authentic staff engagement. With the development of the QDHS Communication Policy and Procedures Framework, channels and modes of communication have been mapped out to ensure effective and timely exchanges between all key stakeholders. The Aboriginal Cultural Standards Framework Committee attended the Quairading Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) Committee Meeting held at the CRC on the 19th of September. Becoming a member of the RAP Committee was one of the immediate steps recommended in the school review. Attending this meeting gave the committee an insight into the aspirations of the local community and a step towards developing a partnership with this committee to improve educational outcomes for Aboriginal students. The ACSF Committee have also developed a plan to embed the Aboriginal Cultural Standards Framework that focuses on the strategies to move towards being a more culturally responsive school. Last week, the ACSF members met with Alison Ramm (Regional Executive Director, Wheatbelt Education Region), Paulina Motlop (Director Aboriginal Education Teaching and Learning) and Kevin O’Keefe (Principal Advisor, Aboriginal Education) to receive input and feedback on the ACSF Committee’s planning to date. This consultation proved to be very effective, and the school will be engaging Paulina and Kevin to run a professional learning session for all staff in week five of this term. The FutureQ committee’s plan details the processes required to ensure effective deployment of resources to suit our school context. This plan also includes strategies to ensure all decisions are made with strategic intent and school planning reflects current systemic and school student performance data. The FutureQ committee will conduct an audit to ensure all events throughout the year are timely, educational and align with school priorities. Finally, I would like to commend all staff who have significantly contributed time and effort to develop our School Improvement Plan. The school staff at Quairading are united in their commitment to continually improve the quality of teaching and learning along with improving the image and reputation of our school. Mr Jason Colbung went to great effort to organise a special visit from Mr Lewis Jetta of the West Coast Eagles on Monday 29th October. Mr Jetta spoke with all our students about setting goals, having respect for ourselves, our families and our elders and the importance of attending school and getting a good education. Mr Jetta then kindly stayed for a ‘meet and greet’ session with local community members. We thank Mr Jetta and his family for taking the time to visit us!
Bandanna Week at QDHS
We have raised over $1000 for Canteen during Bandanna Week (22-26th October). Thank you to all students, staff and community members who purchased a bandanna.
They looked wonderful!
The Kindy class went to visit the Quairading Police Station on Monday 29th October, thank you to Sgt John Hancock and Snr Constable Deb Andrews for showing us around, we had a very enjoyable time!

Kaeshia Colbung: For being a helpful, kind and considerate class member. Keep up the fantastic attitude! Bailey McGinniss: Thank you for the generosity of your time, helping the year 7/8 class fundraise for the Kep Track Trek. Skyla Anderson: For having a red hot crack at any challenge placed in front of her. Skyla thinks outside the box when attempting challenges and she can be proud of her strategies and efforts. Reggie Hayden: Reggie has worked extremely hard over the past two weeks. I am particularly impressed with his efforts in writing. Top job Reggie! Conway Vaughan: Conway displays an enthusiastic attitude and has made tremendous progress in reading. He is always attentive during English warm-ups, keen to learn his focus sounds and words and continually gives a 100% effort during guided reading sessions. Keep it up! Emma Berry: Emma is an exceptional student who consistently demonstrates our school’s four core values. Her caring and thoughtful nature when working with her peers has been outstanding. It’s a pleasure to have you in our class, Emma! Malachi Bennell: Malachi has settled back into our class wonderfully this term. He continues to try his very best in all learning activities and amazes us with his beautifully presented work. Well done, Malachi! Amity Scheffler-Russell: Amity is a polite and bubbly personality in the classroom who is becoming more confident in her work and with her peers as the year progresses. She works well with a group and demonstrates perseverance while working through tasks. Great work Amity. Jasmine Keir: Jasmine always sets high standards for herself in every subject. By constantly challenging herself, she inspires others around her to do the same. This shows Jasmine is a well respected class member and she should be proud of all the effort she puts in. Andrew Hippisley: Andrew is a ‘no fuss student’ which means he is willing to accomplish everything that comes his way. He applies knowledge learnt into tasks he completes. This is a great attribute to have. Well done Andrew! Molly Wilton: Molly has a wonderful attitude to all set tasks. Molly has been using her resilience when faced with challenges. She asks questions if she is unsure and applies that knowledge, especially in angle work. Keep it up Molly! Peter Henry: Peter has had a fantastic start to Term 4. His attitude and persistence towards completing set tasks is admirable. His letter to persuade Peter’s Ice-Cream was amazing! Keep up the fantastic work!
Tenesha Pickett: Tenesha has a ‘go-get-em’ attitude towards work this term. Her letter to Peters Ice-Cream persuading them to make her tropical ice cream was amazing. You used some challenging words to make it sound delicious and it was impressive!
Isaac Fear: For consistently displaying a love of learning. Isaac’s start to Term 4 has been impressive with some awesome, challenging writing. Well done Isaac! Jaxsann Bradford: For a wonderful start to Term 4. Jaxsann has demonstrated a positive attitude towards his learning, showing great improvement in both his mental maths and handwrit-ing results. Keep up the fantastic work, Jaxsann! Tuscynnie Yardley: Tuscynnie always voices her opinions and expresses interest in classroom discussions. Her voice is respected and thoughts are logical when participating. It is great to see your enthusiasm in class Tuscynnie! Danika Squiers: Danika has been displaying some excellent work in science. She is always inquisitive and aims to do more than the work set for her. She regularly hands in homework. Her work quality and commitment to learning are highly appreciated. Well done Danika! Keep up the good work. Caitlyn Logan-Fowler: Caitlyn has demonstrated strong growth in mathematics. She works hard to understand the various concepts and masters the skill through repeated practice. Good Work Caitlyn! Jaylene George: Jaylene shows great commitment to science and takes pride in producing quality work. She works diligently to improve her performance. She creates high-level presentations in science and also presents them well to her peers. Good job Jaylene! Valerie Hayden: Valerie has been making strong effort in mathematics. Her mental strategies and higher order thinking skills are exemplary. She is commended for the quality work that she strives to produce on a regular basis. Well done Valerie! The Year 2/3 Assembly The Year 2/3 class performed a play titled ‘The Actual Heroes’ at the assembly on Friday 26th October. It was about the everyday Superheroes we encounter in daily life and also had the message that we can all be a Superhero—we just need to be the right person in the right place, doing the right thing!
On Wednesday 10th October we had an incursion with Mr White, a Horticulturalist at Lost Lake in Gidgeganup. Mr White brought lots of interesting plants with him and then students had a chance to plant some seeds.
The Year 7/8’s have been busy fundraising for their upcoming Kep Track Trek. They held a car wash and a cupcake sale and raised enough money to ensure the camp was free for all the students! What a great achievement, thank you to the community for supporting these fundraisers.
The Yr 2/3 Class recently wrote letters to the Quairading Shire expressing their support for a playground in Quairading. Shire President, Wayne Davies, kindly visited the Year 2/3 Class to thank them for their letters of support. Whilst in the classroom, the students were fortunate enough to see plans for the playground. Some of the suggested ideas in the plan are the water playground, outdoor trampoline and 6m Eagles nest. The class were interested to see the plans and asked some questions, including some about the bike path. Thanks to Mr Davies for his time in the classroom.
We were fortunate enough to have a visit from Mr Rob Adams who spoke to all students about values and being a good citizen of the world.

Thank you to everyone who attended the last meeting. It was great to see so many members coming along to our meetings. We try and keep them short and sweet and you’re out in time to pick the kids up. Our next meeting is not until Week 3 of Term 1. Mark your diary for 2pm Wednesday 20 February 2019. Upcoming events for the P&C are catering for the Wheatbelt Ball on Friday 9 November (Kylie Squiers is our event coordinator) and also the WA-based Rotary Exchange students on their Wheatbelt/Goldfields Tour on Monday 12 November. We will be in touch about these soon. Thanks again for all your support and help for P&C functions — many hands make light work.

Canteen is open every Monday of the term thanks to our awesome P&C volunteers. To order from canteen, simply write your name, classroom and what you’d like onto a brown paper bag (we have plenty of spares). Add your money and pop it into the blue boxes in your classroom. Please note: we are now out of spaghetti bolognaise—we will reorder in 2019 if popular so please let us know if you love it. We are happy to hear your ideas of food we can consider serving. Get in touch with Sarah or Tanya and we can see if we can add to our menu selection.

Stationery Orders for 2019 Book Lists
Did you know that you will be able to order your 2019 school stationery through the P&C?! We are partnering with the fabulous crew at the Quairading Book Post to offer Quairading families a range of quality stationery items to save your sanity at the end of the summer break. Simply drop your order form to us at the end of term and we’ll pack everything up ready for you to collect in late January when you’re back on deck and ready to head back to school. Save yourself the summer stationery headache and use your money to both support the P&C and a local business. Orders will be due before Christmas so watch out for the order form in a few weeks.
VACSWIM 2018/2019
With swimming pools and beaches a big part of the Western Australian lifestyle, ensuring your children can swim competently and safely is essential. You can now enrol your children in VacSwim swimming lessons during the October and December/January school holidays. VacSwim is for all children - from beginners to more advanced swimmers and young people doing their Bronze Medallion. Your children can start as young as five years old. Your children can join in the fun of learning to swim at pools and open water venues across the State. Enrol your children in VacSwim now at education.wa.edu.au/swimming
KINDY ENROLMENTS 2019
We are now taking enrolments for children starting Kindergarten in 2019. The child must be 4 years old by 30 June 2019.

TAMMIN T20 MILO BLAST
The Tammin T20 Milo Blast will be
held on Thursday November 15th, for students in Years 3-6.
There is a 3/4 and 5/6 competition. QDHS are looking for
parent volunteers to help coach and umpire games.
No experience with cricket is required, the games are very
easy to umpire and there will be helpers from other teams to assist.
Please contact the front office if you are available to help, thank you.
The permaculture garden is going well chickens are at home and laying eggs.We are now planting our seeds.A big thankyou to Renee Anderson and her family for the donation of sheep manure to kick start the garden.The Quairading shire has applied for a grant to finish the garden and plant 20 fruit trees though out the grounds, hoping we get that one.We have started the aquaponics section of the garden if anyone out there has an over supply of goldfish we would be interested in grabbing some of you size does not matter .

COMMUNITY NOTICES QDG JUNIOR TENNIS COACHING AND CARDIO: We are a go! There were some concerns on the length so I have cut it back to a 6 week course starting NEXT Friday the 19th October. Please see FaceBook page and next week’s newsletter for groupings. JUNIOR TENNIS: If you have kids who are keen to play tennis, please take advantage of our Central District Zones Coaching. It is open to children aged Yr 1 and up. It consists of x4 Intensive coaching sessions run by Global Tennis. Two of these sessions are held in Quairading and two are hosted by Cunderdin. A great opportunity for professional coaching and very little travel. Commences 2nd Sept. Please see attachments for schedule and rego forms. School Dental Van: This School Dental Van is currently visiting QDHS, Students are eligible up
to the age of 17 or the end of year 11. If you have a student in high school, even if they are not at
Quairading DHS, and would like them to be seen, you can contact the dental van so we can
