ZHEJIANG PRINCIPALS VISIT BURWOOD HEIGHTS PRIMARY SCHOOL AND KINDERGARTEN

On Friday 1st August, we were privileged to welcome twenty-five principals from Zhejiang, China, and two Vietnamese Government officials to our school for the day.

It was a highly successful and most interesting day for all, in a very relaxed atmosphere, carefully planned to allow our guests to move about freely and ask questions about particular points of interest. The day commenced with a visit to State Schools’ Relief warehouse, and then, visits to classrooms, specialist programmes and a sit-down lunch provided by students and volunteers. The day at school gave our visitors a taste of life at Burwood Heights Primary School and Kindergarten. By day's end, everyone was interacting very enthusiastically and friendships were forged, with reciprocal visits being suggested. Education plays a major role in realising Zhejiang provincial government's strategy to "rejuvenate Zhejiang via Science and Education." Zhejiang is a leading province in the whole nation for education and we were very pleased to have been able to offer another perspective on education in a Victorian school. The language barrier was overcome by having a university interpreter with the group, our Mrs Chia assisting in translating and by the wonders of technology in immediately translating conversation from one language to another by an app on the phone. Finally I thank our marvellous staff, our students for their performances and assistance, from the administration staff, to specialists, classroom teachers, Education Support staff and our volunteers for contributing so much to make this day such a special one for our visitors from China and Vietnam.

THANK YOU ALL

SCHOOL PRODUCTION – THE AMAZING ADVENTURES OF SUPERSTAN

FOUR WEEKS TO GO!

I take this opportunity to thank everyone who has contributed so willingly and enthusiastically to make this whole-school production possible. It promises to be a night of wonderful entertainment and a time where memories will be made and shared, with family and friends.

Your children have been given this opportunity to develop their creative skills and to work as part of a team. They have worked, and are still working, extremely productively together to achieve a common goal – the marvellous performance you will see in four weeks.

The smallest of roles can have a big impact, which is something your children have quickly learnt. They know if they do not learn their lines or dance steps, they will let everyone else down.

A reminder that our school performance is an integral part of the school’s curriculum and it is expected all students will attend.

We are utilising Try Booking—an automated ticketing sales and payment system for this event. To book and print your tickets, please go to:

https://www.trybooking.com/539055

Tickets may be purchased by 5.30pm on 13th September, 2019

REMINDER - PARKING RESTRICTIONS

The provision of school crossings is an important service in providing a safe environment for our students. To support the school crossing supervisors and to improve pedestrian safety outside our school, a number of parking restrictions are in place, including “No Stopping” areas. The “No Stopping“ areas are in place to improve sight lines for motorists and school crossing supervisors to maximise the crossing’s exposure and safety of pedestrians.

The two-minute signs mean TWO MINUTES between the following times 8.30am to 9.15 am and 3.15 pm to 4.00pm. Your child should be “dropped off” and you should not need to alight from the car. If you need to enter the school, please do not park in the two-minute parking area.

Please be aware that you must park legally at all times. We have been advised that authorised officers will be patrolling schools crossings.

STUDENT SAFETY

This is a timely reminder of the procedures we have in place for the safe collection of students from school, both during and after normal school hours. During school hours a parent/guardian may collect their child from school or authorize, in writing, a relative or friend to collect their child. If the authorized person collecting the student is not known to the school, verification of identity using suitable photo identification (such as driver’s licence) must be sighted by school personnel. The school will record the details of when a student has been collected early from school including the date and time, reason for collection and person who received the child (including this person’s signature). If a student is still at school, after the finish of the supervision period of 3.45pm, the school will contact the parents or emergency contact person identified in the school records or other known contacts. If there was a concern about the student not being collected and no contact has been able to be made by the persons stated above, the contact with other authorities would be made. School dismissal time is 3.30pm. Students are supervised in the yard from 3.30pm until 3.45pm.After this time students will be taken to After School Care and are to be collected from there. Parents/guardians/siblings should arrange a meeting place in the school yard to meet the student in question. It is incumbent upon schools to know who is in the school at all times. Thank you for your co-operation in this matter.

SCHOOL NUMBERS

It is that time of year when schools are preparing for the following year and student numbers are critical to the school’s staffing structure. For many of you it must seem very early in the year, but for schools it is imperative that we have knowledge of numbers for staffing and other resources.

Spotlight On… 5/6E!

In 5/6E we have been completing a multimodal writing project. A

multimodal writing project is a collection of writing pieces in different

genres and text forms, but all focusing on a single theme.

We have demonstrated our ability to write a variety of text forms to

suit different purposes and have communicated the intended message

with clarity and style.

We needed to organise our time effectively and use the writing process

of planning, drafting, editing and publishing.

We hope you enjoy some samples from our collection.

Kindergarten News

The children are enjoying the climbing equip-ment in the yard. Currently, the children are trying to master the Monkey Bars and the Fire-man’s pole.

Meet our new feathered additions to the garden of Burwood Heights. We received five new chickens late last term with three of them to be entered in the ‘Schools Poultry Competition’ at the Royal Melbourne Show. Each chicken has designated carers that are responsible for handling feeding, checking and socialising their hens. The chickens have each come to develop their very own, unique personalities and the students would like to share a little about each of them.

Lucky Introducing Lucky, a gorgeous chicken who is social and welcoming. Her plumage has a few more white flecks than the others, so she is easy to identify. Her carers Josh and Carlo spend many recess’ and lunchtimes offering her the best produce around and giving her cuddles. Lucky wears a green band around her ankle.

Marina Marina wears a yellow ankle bracelet. This young lady is a tad shy and would prefer to cuddle other chickens rather than people. However, when she is picked up, she is very calm and will listen to anything you have to say. She has more of an orange plumage that glistens in the sun. Meilei and Julia enjoy spending quiet time with Marina.

Bolt Bolt can be seen wearing a blue band around her left leg. Her committed carers Andrew and Toby never miss a chance to spend time with her and check on her health. She is a quick mover and is usually first to the worms. Being so active she doesn’t sit still for anyone and enjoys a bit of adventure beyond the boundaries of the coop.

Flow

Flow has a red ankle bracelet. She is a very calm hen who enjoys spending time with the adventurous Bolt. They often dirt bath together. Flow is currently being trained by Austria and Aston for the poultry Olympics, as she is very good at high jumping for treats. She is also a very approachable young lady. Currently, she has the smallest comb but we believe it will grow wonderfully.

Sunny Sunny wears a white marker on her ankle. She is a very fussy eater who like to be hand fed whiles roosting on a haystack. She is a lady of luxury often found laying in the sun preening her feathers. She doesn’t mind employing her slaves Hannah and Steph for cuddles on the odd occasion.
