From the director’s desk: Happy 2016!

I hope you had a lovely, peaceful, creative holiday season, and that you’ve started this new year with joy and abundant energy. Naturally, the change to a new calendar year causes reflection and anticipation.

One of the defining components of 2015 for The Arts Center was the ground breaking in the Hansen Arts Park. The Arts Center’s beloved Buildings and Grounds committee skillfully managed to get a ton of work done in the fall, keeping the project on schedule.

In 2016 we look forward to adding the more artistic elements to the park. Steve Dietz, our wonderful artistic coordinator, guided us through national searches led to whom the Arts Park Task Force has chosen to design the larger, signature pieces in the park. The pavilion/stage will be designed by a firm in Minnesota called PLAAD, Inc, and a large scale permanent sculpture will be made by Owen William Fritts an artist from Flagstaff, Arizona. Our plan is to have the park up and running by the fall of 2016.

And just because we celebrate the past and are excited about the future does not mean that there aren’t plans for the present. As winter progresses, watch for activity in the park. Maybe there will be frozen coloured ice sculptures… Or a ballet of snow angels… Or a snow shoe race…

I also need to remind you that this park would not be possible without you! Your creative thinking, support, questions, and love for your downtown are crucial to the park’s success and development. Thank you.

And come visit us to share your winter programming ideas!

danCing Chairs & painted feet: Creativity unleashed

January 21 – February 27, 2016

The Arts Center will showcase works of art created in its Art for Life program. Four monumental artworks, each 12’ x 15’, and a video of how they were created will be premiered in the gallery. These artworks were created by elders using a Mobile Painting Device (MPD), an adaptive technology that transforms the wheelchair into a giant paintbrush, giving people living with disabilities the opportunity to express themselves on a large scale.

reCeption: Wednesday, february 3 at 5:00 pm. featuring dancer margreat sam and culinary treats from india.

The project, funded through the North Dakota Council on the Arts, was guided by Canadian artist Jeff Nachtigall who brought his expertise and his MPD to Jamestown through The Arts Center’s Art for Life program. This is the first time the MPD has been used in ND. Combining another unique “first” was the inclusion of a traditional dancer in the process. The project was initially done in Jamestown at Ave Maria Village & Heritage Centre then repeated at three other facilities in ND. Each location hosted unique traditional dancers who added inspiration and encouragement to the elder’s artwork through their movement, music, and storytelling. The artworks will be displayed in Jamestown with photographs of the process.

The artists and volunteers who participated in the project will be invited to attend the reception including Margreat Sam, the Bharatanatyam dancer who worked with Jamestown. Margreat is originally from India (now living in Fargo). In Bombay, Margreat owned and ran a traditional dance studio. She also has trained dancers for Bollywood movies. During her visit she will guide an intergenerational movement experience for residents of Ave Maria Village & Heritage Centre that includes our Arts After School students. She will also share therapeutic movements with elders and work with physical therapy staff.

Johnny Boyd in ConCert

Friday, January 22nd 7:00 pm at The Arts Center

No one exemplifies modern-day crooning better than Johnny Boyd: smooth, romantic vocals; matinee idol charisma; classic gentleman’s style; and dynamic, irreverent performances. But it’s his fresh, emotive, all-original contributions to the Great American Songbook that will be his legacy.

Boyd, a prolific songwriter, is renowned for his unique ability to seamlessly blend jazz, swing, pop, country, gospel, and rock, bringing back the nostalgic charisma of a bygone era. His repertoire features original and favored songs in the classic

Great American Songbook style, ranging from torch-filled ballads to raucous rock ’n’ roll.

NPR aptly stated, “If Frank Sinatra and Johnny Cash had a love child, it would be Johnny Boyd.”

The Washington Post heralded Boyd as “romantic,” The New York Daily News touted him as “smooth,” and The San Francisco Bay Guardian lauded him “sophisticated and fun.” Indeed, Johnny Boyd is all of this and more.

View a live performance of Johnny Boyd here: http://bit.ly/1OhRIJs Tickets at the door: $20 / $15 for Arts Center members & students.

Johnny Boyds musical training started in the Phoenix Boys Choir, and his passion for music and the arts deepened as a thespian in high school. In 1998, after performing tirelessly for five years in San Francisco Bay Area nightclubs and dance halls, Boyd was signed to a major-label recording contract with Time Bomb Recordings/BMG. Today, with hundreds of thousands of records sold and more than 2,000 live performances to his credit—including engagements with celebrated artists Rosemary Clooney, Lionel Hampton, and the Brian Setzer Orchestra—Boyd is preparing to depart for the next leg of his creative journey. With his highly anticipated upcoming release, Someday Dreams of You, Boyd introduces a whole new generation of listeners to the Great American Songbook and his classic crooning style.

arts park activity

Winter iCe sCulpture for the parkCollaborative Community Ice Block Sculpture. The Hansen Arts Park. February 5 – 14, 2016.

Join in the fun as we build a colorful ice sculpture in the Hansen Arts Park.

Community members are invited to create their own ice block shapes and deliver them to the park during Jamestown’s annual Cabin Fever Days (February 5 – 14, 2016).

Anyone can contribute. Ice blocks can be any size, color and shape.

The sculpture will grow and change throughout the week as more ice shapes are added. Watch for the first pieces to appear and add as many pieces as you would like throughout the week.

Helpful hint: When assembling and stacking your blocks pour a dribble of fresh water over the bottom block, count to 10, then set the next block on top. The thin layer of fresh ice in between will help stabilize your structure.

Colored ice blocks are easy to make with various containers, food coloring and water. Mix the coloring of your choice, with water (a little color goes a long way) and set outside to freeze. After the water is frozen solid, pop your colored ice block out of the container. Then bring all your blocks to The Arts Center to add to the sculpture.

Like us on Facebook, we will be adding great ideas, tips, and advice to get the creative juices flowing!
