It was a different time. An era of war, and industry. Where locomotive travel was romanticised. Not for its utility, but as a symbol achievement and progress – for the possibility of exploration, and the promise of bringing people closer together. From its release in 1943, there were few engines more loved in Australian history than the 3801. This special release celebrates the 75th anniversary of the 3801 and the restoration of a legend from the steam age.

To Trieu started a career at the Royal Australian Mint in May 1999. He worked in the Circulating Coin Hall, Quality Management Systems Team and the Tool Room before moving into the Numismatic Business Line (NBL) Branch.

The Numismatic Business Line (NBL) Operations Branch is responsible for minting numismatic coins, medals, medallions and token products within the competing constraints of time, quality and efficiency.

Working as the Numismatic Team Leader, To spends a lot of time managing and supporting a highly productive team to produce beautiful collectable coins for the public. To assists the team with staffing, operational strategy and planning.

To is passionate about collectable coins and was excited about the release of the AC/DC – 45 Years of Thunder coins. With a large coin collection, To has been collecting the Lunar Series coins since 2007.

As an Official Supporter of the Invictus Games Sydney 2018, the Royal Australian Mint has been working to produce the Invictus Games Sydney 2018 medals. To and the team have been busy preparing the gold, silver and bronze medals for the Invictus Games Sydney 2018 and are very proud to be producing a high quality product for the event.

The design of the Invictus Games Sydney 2018 medals have had a distinctly Australian makeover, with each medal adorned with Australia’s national floral emblem Golden Wattle. To says that every medal for the Invictus Games Sydney 2018 is individually produced by a team of designers, engineers, engravers, die technicians, machinists and production experts, making it a truly collaborative effort.

As a proud Mintie, To enjoys the uniqueness of what the Royal Australian Mint has to offer. To hopes to stay working at the Mint for the rest of his career, stating that working at the Mint is amazing and the Mint has one of the best cultures around.

To celebrate Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II’s visit to Australia in 2000, the Royal Australian Mint struck a very special commemorative 50c coin. A new effigy of the Queen appeared on this special commemorative 50c coin released on 17 March 2000, which was the first time since 1936 a Royal effigy designed by an Australian appeared on an Australian coin.

Royal Australian Mint designer Vladimir Gottwald created the new effigy, which was specially approved by Buckingham Palace for this once only use. Only 25,000 50c silver proof collector coins were minted. Five million circulating versions of this coin were also released by the Reserve Bank of Australia later in 2000.

Like the Ian Rank-Broadley portrait currently used on all circulating coins until the changeover to the Jody Clarke effigy in 2019, the Vladimir Gottwald portrait presents a contemporary image of the Queen. Gottwald’s design features some interesting differences, including the Queen wearing Queen Mary’s ‘Girls of Great Britain and Ireland’ Tiara, earrings from the Queen’s private collection and The King Faisal of Saudi Arabia Necklace.

The reverse side of the Royal Visit silver proof coin features the Australian flag flying above Parliament House in Canberra. Also featured is St Edward’s Crown, believed to contain gold from the crown of Edward the Confessor, who is thought to be the first monarch to assemble a regalia.

Each of the proof coins produced were presented inside a red velvet case with a crown on the lid. The case fit into an outer box, which featured an embossed silver image of St Edward’s Crown.

As a gift to celebrate the royal visit, the Royal Australian Mint presented Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II with two proof versions of the Royal Visit 50 cent coin in a Tasmanian Blackwood display case. This wooden display case had a glass top and held the two coins, two coining dies and two gold plated plaques. The plaque featured the Australian Coat of Arms and the inscription included details of the presentation. The wooden cabinet (box) was handcrafted in the Canberra region by a local craftsman. Its dimensions are 335 x 230 x 130mm and the whole unit weights just over 4 kilograms.

The 2018 Rascals and Ratbags Roadshow is ending in Western Australia after touring around Australia. This year we highlighted the 2018 Mintmark Suite of uncirculated and proof coins that acknowledge the contribution of the convicts to Australia’s history. 2018 New Year’s Eve Event – Last coin of the year

This will be your chance to secure the last coins produced for 2018. On December 31 at 3:30 pm, a lucky door draw will be held at the Mint for the last coins of the year. We will draw the last ten customers to strike a coin and each lucky winner will receive a certificate authenticating their last coin for 2018. Ticketing closes at 3.25 pm.

2019 New Year’s Day Event – First 100 by 9.30 am!

On 1 January 2019, the first 100 people at the Mint by 9.30 am will receive a ticket to go into the draw to be the first person to strike a coin in 2019! Tickets will be drawn to declare all 100 places, with those drawn receiving corresponding certificates authenticating their piece. Similar to 2018’s event, the public will no longer be required to line up at the Mint overnight. In fact, due to concerns about health and safety issues, there is likely to be a ruling introduced which disallows people to line up at the Mint before 6 am on New Year’s Day. Please view ramint.gov.au for event terms and conditions.
