What’s On 27

The Mint is excited to present the next highly anticipated releases for you to enjoy and collect. In September we welcome the sixth effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, heralding a new era in Australian coins on page 6. This special release bears two different effigies of Her Majesty. The reverse effigy by Ian Rank-Broadley has been used on Australian coins since 1998. The obverse features a new official effigy designed by Mr Jody Clark, which will be adopted on to Australian coins from 2019.

This month we showcase the latest from The Earth and Beyond series which pays tribute to the Earth’s Moon on page 4. We also bring you the 2019 Lunar Collection, celebrating the 2019 ‘Year Of the Pig’ on page 8. As an Official Supporter and Medal Supplier of the Invictus Games Sydney 2018, the Mint proudly presents two very special commemorative coins from the Invictus Games Sydney 2018 coin program on page 10.

Don’t forget to secure the final coins from the Kangaroo Series – Seasons Change which beautifully capture the spirit of Australia through our iconic marsupial on page 12.

On behalf of our Minties currently touring around Australia, we hope to see you soon at our pop-up shops. Stay tuned to our social channels and website for information on dates and locations.

We hope you enjoy these new releases as much as we have enjoyed crafting these for you!

In a time of trench warfare, the Second Battle of Villers-Bretonneux was an unconventional but highly effective night counter-offensive. Launched by Australia’s 13th and 15th Brigades, this surprise rush assault quickly surrounded German forces and drove them out of town. This one attack liberated the strategically vital town of Villers-Bretonneux and helped end the fighting on the Western Front. Today we pay tribute to those who served, with the release of the latest coin in the Western Front series.

This will be the final release from the Western Front three year program. Order yours today!

The Battle of Amiens

The Battle of Amiens is considered by many historians to be one of Australia’s most significant actions in the First World War. The battle itself is often referred to as ‘the black day of the German army’, and for very good reason. On the morning of 8 August 1918, an allied Australian and Canadian force launched a surprise attack on German positions that ultimately led to the end of fighting on the Western Front. To commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Battle of Amiens, the Mint is proud to present the final release in our exclusive Western Front series.

MEET THE MINTIESH A N N A H W E B B

Hannah Webb started a career at the Royal Australian Mint in June 2016, initially working within the Marketing and Communications Team. Hannah has had the opportunity to work across the business, engaging with all areas of the Mint, communicating messages around key products and services.

In 2017 Hannah’s passion for engaging the public and her love of art lead her to the Education and Visitor Services (EVS) team. Working as a Public Programs Officer, Hannah now assists with the delivery of tours, maintenance of the gallery and implementing new gallery programs.

The EVS team promotes public understanding of the cultural and historical significance of coins. The team also provides public programs based on the display and interpretation of the National Coin Collection, promoting the Mint as a tourist attraction and providing lifelong education to school groups and the wider community.

Hannah is a proud collector and admires the precision and craftsmanship that is exhibited in coin design. Hannah’s favourite coin is the 2012 $5 Silver Proof Colour Printed Domed Crux Southern Sky Coin. This innovative coin design showcases the Crux constellation, otherwise known as the Southern Cross; one of the smallest and brightest of the 88 modern constellations.

Hannah enjoys the uniqueness of getting to work in both an operating factory and cultural institution. Hannah aims to create accessible and fun ways to engage with new audiences by bringing programs and exhibitions to life. Hannah and the EVS team have recently introduced a variety of new programs to engage the community including Mini-Minties, public talks and lectures. FROM THE VAULT2 0 0 3 M A S T E R P I E C E S I N S I L V E R – T H E P O R T P H I L L I P P A T T E R N S

Released in 2003 and struck in fine silver to a proof finish, this four coin set celebrated the 150th anniversary of the establishment of the Port Phillip/Kangaroo Office. The story of the Port Philip Patterns, also known as the Taylor Patterns or Kangaroo Office Patterns, is a little known numismatic story. Considered a failed business venture, it represents one of the first attempts to establish a coin production industry in Australia.

Where in Melbourne was the ‘Kangaroo Office’, the venture that produced these patterns, originally housed? How many patterns were really produced, a figure we still do not know today, and why were the instructions to drop the dies into the depths of Port Phillip Bay not carried out?

In deciding to commemorate this little known piece of numismatic history 150 years after the first Patterns were produced, the Royal Australian Mint had the difficult task of trying to find accurate information about the Patterns.

Each design of the Kangaroo was slightly different and each pattern was individually engraved.

In order to provide accurate representations of the original coins, the Mint used enlarged pictures of the patterns from the British Museum. Designer and engraver Vladimir Gottwald recreated these coins as close to the original as possible. He reproduced the designs on plaster first, before scanning the designs into computers and then cutting dies directly on computer engraving machines. This process ensured The Port Phillip Patterns were faithful to their original size and designs. The designs of the patterns were produced with a fine silver ‘host’ coin, making a four coin set. The silver replicas enable each collector to own a full set of the original Kangaroo Office Patterns, with their designs as close to the original as possible. The numismatic story behind these coins only serves to further illustrate the beauty and appeal of these masterpieces.
