P5 Camp

P3 Learning Journey to NEWater Plant

Young Explorers@ the Zoo

P3 students challenged each other in various inter-class relay games. The P4 students played Captain’s Ball while the P5 students pitted their skills against one another in volleyball. As for the P6 students, they played handball. The event would not have been possible without the assistance from the Parent Support Group and the team of dedicated PE teachers. P4 Local Learning Experience

Duck & Hippo TourIn March, the P4 classes learnt about the historical landmarks and the cultural sights of Singapore. They experienced the award-winning Duck and Hippo Bus Tour. It was no surprise that the students’ favourite part was when the Duck Craft moved from land and into water. It was indeed a fun and novel way to strengthen the Singapore spirit in our students.

The Kestrel Cub Scout Unit held its First Overnight Camp Cum Investiture in school from 20 to 22 May. The boys experienced cooking their own meals using mess tins, solid fuel and Tommy stoves!

The Cub Scout Leadership Camp held at Sarimbun Scout Campsite from 26 to 29 May brought the P4 scouts closer to nature as they pitched their tents in a forested area. All our boys managed to complete the low elements course that required teamwork and decision-making. The Best Camper Award went to Zachary Min Thaik of P4.2.

The P3 students visited the NEWater plant situated in the east of Singapore and learnt more about NEWater, one of Singapore’s national tap.

The P3 students went to the zoo and experienced a “live” Science lesson. Working in pairs, they were guided by their teachers as they answered questions using the TrailShuttle app on their iPads about the animals they saw there. Our students were enthralled by the diversity of wildlife they saw at the zoo.

P5 students stepped out of their comfort zone and ventured into the natural outdoors at the MOE Adventure Centre Jalan Bahtera and came out of the whole experience, stronger and closer as a class. Aligned to the theme of “Kampung Days”, the students strengthened their friendships and learnt about teamwork, resilience and perseverance.

Visit by Senior Parliamentary Secretary

RGPS-KCS Learning Symposium

RELC International Conference

The school hosted a dialogue with Assoc Prof Dr Muhammad Faishal Ibrahim, Senior Parliamentary Secretary, Ministry of Education & Ministry of Social and Family Development, and Superintendent (S3) Mrs Low Chew Lian, on 5 April. Dr Faishal shared heart-warming anecdotes about growing up and his family, encouraging all our students to love and honour their parents. He wrapped up the dialogue by taking time to speak candidly with the teachers, about courage and dedication to the service.

The school is happy to have Mrs Jacqueline Anthony (HOD/Student Development) and Miss Su Yen Leng (SH Student Leadership/Pastoral Care) represent KCS at the Redesigning Pedagogy International Conference 2017. Our paper on Student Voice and Advocacy (SVA) was well-received by the audience. SVA@KCS (also the school's Learning for Life Programme) is centred on student engagement and it focuses on student voice and advocacy bringing out the active citizenry in our students.

On 13 March, the School Executive Committee and Teacher Leaders went on a Learning Journey to the Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD). The team had the privilege of gaining insights into the unique interdisciplinary curriculum and hands-on experiences the institution offers to its students.

Learning Journey to SUTD

On 29 December 2016, the staff of Kheng Cheng School and Raffles Girls' Primary School gathered at the inaugural RGPS-KCS Learning Symposium to share pedagogical

knowledge and expertise. Keynote speaker, Mr Benny Se Teo, owner of Eighteen Chefs, gave the opening address and had the audience enthralled with his many life experiences which contributed to his success as one of Singapore's most inspiring and successful entrepreneurs. Aptly themed “Unlimited Possibilities”, participants had an insightful and rewarding time from the numerous sharing of strategies and research-based projects by the various teams from both schools.

A research paper prepared by Miss Grace Foong, Mdm Kalpana, Miss Shalini, Mrs Aw Lee San, Mrs Caryn Ong and Mrs Mano-Zuraidah Buang, from the English Language Department, was selected for presentation at the 52nd RELC International Conference held from 13 to 15 March this year. The action research, supported by the ELIS Research Fund, spanned two years from 2015 to 2016. Part of the paper was also shared at the RGPS-KCS Learning Symposium in December 2016.

90th Founder’s Day

Cultural Immersion Programme to Beijing

KCS celebrated its Founder’s Day on 3 March with a prize presentation and a concert. It was significant as KCS celebrated our 90 years of heritage and success. The Guest-of-Honour was Mr Goh Peng Tong, Honorary Chairman, School Management Committee. During the celebration, staff and students received awards in recognition of their contribution and service. We wish Kheng Cheng School many more good years ahead and may the school continue to soar to greater heights in the years to come. Happy 90th Anniversary, Kheng Cheng!

34 P5 students, accompanied by our Vice-Principal (Admin), Mr Chionh Boon Soo, and five teachers, went on a Cultural Immersion Programme to Beijing from 27 May to 2 June. The hosting school (北京师范大学朝阳附属小学) put up cultural performances and welcomed the group into their classrooms. Our students also experienced how Children’s Day was celebrated in China during their short stay and were impressed by the many historical landmarks such as the Great Wall of China, the Summer Palace and the Forbidden City.

The Open House took place on Saturday, 3 June, with a wonderful mix of learning and fun for the young K2 visitors and their families. Our student ambassadors confidently led the visitors on tours which showcased the KCS experience while the Dance Ensemble and Chinese Orchestra entertained our guests with their splendid performance. The hall came to life with a funfair that saw many young children buying balloons and crafts or trying their hand at shooting targets at the booths using Nerf guns. This experience gave the parents a glimpse of a typical day in our KCS canteen. We are thankful to all staff as well as the PSG members who had made the event a successful one!

Parents’ Symposium Sporty Saturdays@KCS

Chinese New Celebrations

Parents’ Outreach@Toa Payoh Sensory Park

This year’s Parents Outreach @ Toa Payoh Sensory Park was held on 4 March. The two sessions saw students, together with their parents, bonded and learned more about the park. Both students and parents had a fun and an educational bonding time.

The Parent Support Group (PSG) started May on a healthy note. They enjoyed a good session of badminton with their children and friends. It certainly boosted

parent-child bonding the active way. Saturdays will not be the same anymore at KCS!

Parents gathered in KCS on 8 April to learn about the various strategies that our teachers use in school. Parents found the sessions useful in supporting their children with their academics at home.

Scrabble Club

Performance at The Peak

Wits and Words

Singapore Amazing Flying Machine Competition (SAFMC)

5 P5 debaters took part in ‘Wits and Words 2017’ organised by the Gifted Education Branch, MOE.

Our Scrabble Club Junior Team at the finals of the Inter-School National Scrabble Competition. They did their best and achieved the 4th place.

It was an enriching experience. While preparing the speeches, I learnt new skills and many new things.

Sofia (P5.6)

The experience was very enriching. Writing our speeches was unlike writing compositions and it was challenging. The debate sessions helped me and I really enjoyed speaking in front of an unfamiliar audience.

Georgina (P5.6)

The Chinese Orchestra, Choir and Lion Dance made their way to the Peak on 4 Feb to take part in the Chinese New Year Celebrations. Our students performed well and heightened the festive mood at the celebrations. Thanks to all parents, students and their siblings who supported the ensembles!

The SAFMC participants worked hard on their presentations and plane designs, showing resilience and perseverance throughout their practice sessions. One of the teams, The Force, made us very proud by clinching the Best Presentation Award. Congratulations to Iman, Amberlyn and Jone Yarn from P4.4!
