Kia Ora and Welcome to TAN.

A big welcome to New Entrant Isaac Davis who started this

week.

Athletics Sports - After two false starts it dawned fine enough on Tuesday to finally have the Year 4-13 Athletic Sports. It was great to see over 100 children running jumping and throwing on the fields all day. The full list of results accompanies this and congratulations to all those who did so well. It was noticeable to us the high rate of participation, everybody did at least two events and most did a lot more. Participating and Contributing are the Key Competencies stressed here; with the demand for house points so high all students had a chance to contribute to their house total, even if they may have preferred to sit and watch! The main point of athletics of course is competition. We don’t need to be scared of the word compete – it literally means to seek together. You bring your ability and I bring mine and we race to see who is fastest or can throw or jump furthest. Moreover, although people gifted at sprinting are like that because of the higher proportion of fast twitch fibres in their leg muscles, they do have to expend some effort to get there and some of them are very dedicated to the training required to produce such results. Similarly, we value the effort that those who don’t have the fast twitch fibres and bring up the rear – they often try as hard. Their satisfaction may come from being closer than last year or throwing further. It is also important to remember that this isn’t the sole measure of success as a person. It is one aspect of a whole character; we also properly value those who work hard, are good friends and can solve problems. We can still celebrate, on a few days of the year, those who are the fastest!

Senior (Year 11-13 students) will have had meetings with their mentors over this past week and on Friday reports of these will be going home. As always if you have a question or want to discuss progress do not hesitate to make an appointment with the teacher or teachers concerned.

Best wishes to the Sheilah Winn Shakespeare group when they perform a 15 minute excerpt from Measure for Measure at Timaru Girls High School next Tuesday. They have been rehearsing hard including Sundays so if you get a chance get along to see another great performance.

Good luck also to the Year 13 PE students on their Lake Ohau kayak, A2O MTB expedition over Sunday and Monday. On the second day they will be accompanied by a Mackenzie College group.

Next Thursday will see the End of Term Assembly at 1.15pm in the Event Centre Theatre. Parents and friends of the school are welcome to join in this end of Term 1 celebration of a very busy term!
