Why did the pie cross the road?Because it was meet’n tatie

A new teacher was trying to make use of her psychology courses. She started her class by saying, “Everyone who thinks they’re stupid, stand up!”After a few seconds, Little Davie stood up. The teacher said, “Do you think you’re stupid, Little Davie?”“No, miss, but I hate to see you standing there all by yourself!”

I can’t believe nobody even congratulated me on the hat trick I scored today.Although I guess it would have been a bit more impressive if we hadn’t lost 2-1.

I’ve just told my missus that I am leaving her to pursue my lifelong ambition of becoming a plastic surgeon. That should raise a few eyebrows.

My long-haired collie ran up to me today and went, “Bark bark bark. Bark bark, bark, WOOF!”I said to her, “What’s that girl. A forest fi re?”

Do you want to hear two short jokes and a long joke? Joke, joke, jooooooooooooke.

So I rang up a local building fi rm, I said ‘I want a skip outside my house.’ He said ‘I’m not stopping you.’

I have a gravel path in my garden while my neighbour’s is concrete. I think mine wins on aggregate.

A police offi cer on traffi c duty fl ags down a car. “Sir, you appear to have 12 penguins in the back of your car.” “That’s right, offi cer, I do.”“Well that’s ridiculous – take them to the zoo straight away.”“OK offi cer.” And the car drives off.Next day, the same policeman in the same spot sees the same car drive past – with the penguins in the back. He fl ags him down again.“I thought I told you to take them to the zoo…”“Yes, offi cer, and it was great – today I’m taking them to the cinema.”

This year has passed really quickly so far, it being Easter weekend already, when it doesn’t seem two minutes since it was Christmas. January has always been a quiet month in the entertainment calendar when cash is always a bit tight with credit card bills on the doorstep after the very expensive Christmas period. The period after Easter can also be the same. However, in my view, venues would be able to remain busy if they continue to supply high quality entertainment. I have long advocated that we have to ‘use it or lose it’ where live music is concerned so I was somewhat surprised that the number of live acts who came to support top international singing star Diana Edwards at The Victoria in Dronfi eld was a disappointing two. John Swift, veteran bass player with local band, The Canyon and Dave Mae, whose magnifi cent vocal talent, inherited from his famous father, Glen Dale of sixties top band the Fortunes, was on show with a guest spot. Dave will be appearing at the Victoria in the near future, when a guest spot from his dad is more than likely, singing his chart topping hit of the sixties. Diana was her usual excellent self and fi lled the place to capacity. We were out again on Good Friday, as I really wanted to call into the Academy, Dronfi eld to congratulate personally the lovely Rosie Furniss, daughter of top agent, local singer and vocal coach, Stephanie King, on her eighteenth birthday. The party was in full swing when we arrived with a multitude of Rosie’s friends in attendance and I was pleased to see my pal, Keith Chapman enjoying the festivities. Keith and I certainly got the average age up a notch. Rosie looked stunning on the night and I remarked to Stephanie that it was incredible how the time had passed so quickly. I well remember Rosie and her close pal, Tammy Wilcockson, who also looked beautiful on the night, when they made their showbusiness debuts in ‘Stars of the Future. After an hour at the party, we went to the Talbot in Dronfi eld, who were celebrating one year on from their re-opening after a substantial re-furbishment. The Canyon performed to a high standard on the night and there was a free buffet for the customers,

where all my will power was called on to resist I have been stopped smoking now for nigh on two weeks and being a bit fi gure conscious, I am desperate to fall into the trapof swapping one habit for another. The last time I gave up cigarettes, I put on two stones in weight. The football at the weekend was amazing locally with Wednesday winning four goals to two away at high fl ying Bournemouth, Rotherham, despite scoring four goals away at champions elect, Wolverhampton Wanderers, lost out in a ten goal thriller. Sheffi eld United won courtesy of an own goal and the other results fell kindly for Chesterfi eld who only managed a one all draw against Exeter. They sit in second place and are strong favourites for promotion to division one.

THE X FACTOR VISITS SHEFFIELD THIS WEEK AS PART OF ITS BIGGEST EVER AUDITION TOUR!Following the news that Cheryl Cole and Simon Cowell are to reunite as judges on this year’s series, The X Factor’s fi rst round of auditions are getting underway visiting an unprecedented 43 towns and cities across the UK and Ireland in a bid to fi nd the next smash-hit singer. Leaving no stone unturned the audition tour will visit Yorkshire, coming to Meadowhall in a unit on Lower High Street near Marks & Spencer on Saturday 26th April as part of their smaller scale Mobile Audition Tour, which will be visiting a further 34 locations in total covering all corners of the country. The Mobile Audition Tour is where James Arthur was discovered in 2012.The X Factor creator Simon Cowell added: “The last time I was on the show we discovered One Direction, Cher Lloyd and Rebecca Ferguson. This year we’re visiting more towns and cities than ever across the UK to fi nd the next pop star ready to take on the world. So if you’re thinking about auditioning, just do it!”Speaking about her tips for auditioning Cheryl Cole added: “If you do something original or a good remix or something that makes people sit up and listen, that’s always a good start. So go and do some research, fi nd some unique ways of singing songs we’re already aware of.” With so many auditions taking place this year, if you’ve ever wanted to audition for The X Factor, now is the time to do it. Whether you’ve never auditioned, auditioned before but not got a break, or if you’ve already got a manager – we want to hear from you!All any budding hopefuls need to do is turn up on the date and time specifi ed, there is no need to apply beforehand. If they impress The X Factor team with their vocals, they will then be in with a chance of auditioning in front of Simon, Cheryl and the other X Factor judges, when the judges’ auditions take place in summer.Acts are advised to turn up early as audition slots are on a fi rst come, fi rst served basis. On the Mobile Audition Tour the X Factor audition on a fi rst come, fi rst served basis and we cannot guarantee you will get an audition. However, on the larger scale Open Audition Tour everyone who turns up will be guaranteed an audition.Information and the cities for the judges’ tour will be confi rmed closer to the time. The X Factor returns to ITV, and The Xtra Factor to ITV2 and itv.com later in the year. Fans of the show can follow all of the action from the auditions via @TheXFactor on Twitter or Facebook.com/TheXFactor.

PETER GABRIELFollowing the phenomenal response to the recent ‘Back to Front’ tour dates, the latest honoured musician to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Peter Gabriel, has confi rmed a further series of ‘Back to Front’ arena shows in the UK. He returns to the Motorpoint Arena Sheffi eld for the fi rst time in 10 years on Sunday 30th November. It is testament to the enduring appeal of Gabriel’s 1986 album that the ‘Back to Front’ tour has caught the public imagination so strongly once again. The new shows will continue to feature the original ‘So’ live band (bass-wizard Tony Levin, guitarist David Rhodes, keyboardist David Sancious and drummer Manu Katche) and span Gabriel’s illustrious career, including a performance of ‘So’ in its entirety. “We serve it up in three parts; like a meal. The starter will be an acoustic bit, almost like we would be in rehearsal mode. From that acoustic starter we move on to the savoury dish, which is electric or more electronic stuff. If you survive that, then you get your dessert, which is the complete and uninterrupted album of ‘So,’ in the order in which it was originally intended”. - Peter Gabriel As well as celebrating the ‘So’ album the tour has also been an opportunity for Peter to play some new material live for the fi rst time. Tracks like ‘Daddy Long Legs’ and ‘Show Yourself’ (from the fi lm Words with Gods) both featured regularly during the 2013 tour to fantastic audience reactions. The theme of showcasing new material, alongside the old, is sure to remain in the forthcoming shows. Peter Gabriel is offering a unique opportunity to go ‘Behind the Scenes’ and view the Back to Front tour soundcheck for the upcoming shows. Only available in very limited numbers from Peter Gabriel’s offi cial website, this is the chance to buy a special fan experience - a front row or a premium seat ticket, an invitation to the soundcheck, pre-show hospitality and unrepeatable gift. More details at petergabriel.com Tickets go on sale Friday the 25th April at 9am, in person at the Arena Box Offi ce, by phone on 0114 256 5656 or online at www.motorpointarenasheffi eld.co.uk.

How to tell your Fortune - Part Two

Last week I started the fi rst of six articles on `How to tell your Fortune` when I expalined about the Tarot cards and how to read them. This week I go into how the cards refl ect your life. The way to display the cards is to put them into a spread. You can do it any way you want, some readers divide cards in past - present - future but my technique is to use 15 cards and then read those cards in the order they rendomly come out. I am fortunate that Spirit voices are always present when I do a readings which helps me read the cards but there are a few spreads to use if you want things clearerThe fi rst method is the Celtic Cross, where you use seven cards (seven being the spiritual number) and place them as a cross pattern. Here I explain a quick insight of The Celtic Cross.

1. The Present 2. Obstacles 3. Expectations 4. Past Experiences. 5. Recent Infl uences. 6. The Outcome 7. Immediate Outcome.

1. Card one out is the present. One example is that if it’s the Moon card I know somewhere in the clients life there is deceit.2. This card refl ects the lifestyle, relationship and work.3. Number three refl ects the issues where you don’t want to see confl ict. Those cards are The Tower, The Devil, The Moon and Sword cards.4. This card shows how you will deal with the confl ict. The best cards for that are The Star, The

We’re seeing new advice almost every day on how to prevent or delay dementia. It’s hard to know what to do for the best.A new review has taken a look at a wide range of current research to see if there is knowledge that we could use to help our parents – and ourselves – prevent or manage dementia.Rapid weight loss can be a very early sign of dementia. Not eating enough is potentially a greater health risk than obesity for older people, says the review. There are many reasons why older people eat less well and many may simply be what happens as we get older so knowing whether to be worried or not is diffi cult. Some people lose their sense of smell and taste so eating becomes less appealing. Others fi nd planning, shopping and cooking increasingly diffi cult. Both can be normal ageing or early symptoms of dementia.Eating less well will clearly lead to weight loss over time. Rapid weight loss may be an early indication of dementia and could start as much as three to six years before dementia is offi cially diagnosed.Weight loss is often seen as an intrinsic part of dementia. The researchers here ague that actually there’s much that can be done to avoid it.Mealtimes get harder as dementia progresses. As dementia progresses there will be all sorts of reasons why people stop eating well – many of which can be addressed. Some people will simply forget to eat. Those who tend to wander may leave a meal unfi nished and not come back to

it. Sometimes people will simply refuse to eat what’s offered to them and take exception to certain foods and drinks. Reminders and the right choices can easily help here.As dementia advances there are greater challenges. People may experience dyspraxia - the loss of the ability to plan and accomplish tasks that require motor skills such as eating. Anyone with agnosia will fi nd it increasingly diffi cult to recognise once familiar objects and people making mealtimes harder to manage. Help with feeding may become necessary. There are physical challenges as well. Normal ageing can lead to dental issues that make eating more diffi cult – hence the tendency for care homes to serve softer foods. As dementia progresses people may actually become unable to eat because they can’t chew or swallow – or even open their mouth. How we can help extend independent livingWhile the advice from the review is focused on care homes there are ideas we can pull out to discuss with our parents’ healthcare team wherever they are living. As our parents age, we can keep an eye on their weight and talk to healthcare professionals about any worries. We can help them to access nutritious meals even if they are struggling to shop or cook for themselves.Questions to ask the care homeOnce it’s clear that a parent does have dementia then it’s still important to focus on diet, nutrition and wellbeing. The report highlights steps that care

homes and hospitals should be taking to ensure good nutrition for their patients, and these are aspects that we can ask about when choosing a home.• Do they regularly monitor weight?• Do they have plans for optimising nutrition – and do they work with professional nutritionists to achieve that?• Are staff trained to help people who fi nd eating and drinking diffi cult or who show challenging behaviour?• Has the dining environment been designed for the needs of dementia patients? Can specifi c diets and supplements prevent dementia? The challenges of life with dementia are daunting for relatives. Anything we can do to prevent it for our parents and ourselves would be good. Supplements are often highlighted as a possibility. With that in mind the researchers looked at studies on various types of diet and supplements including micro- and macro-nutrients such as vitamin B6, vitamin B12, folate, vitamin C, vitamin E, fl avonoids, omega-3 and a Mediterranean diet. While there is plenty of research going on the reviewers couldn’t defi nitively say at this point that there is a link between any of these and cognitive function. What they were willing to say was that good nutrition throughout life from pre-natal care is important to give the brain the best chance of developing properly and prevent neurodegeneration.

CITY INVESTS IN CYCLING BOOMMany exciting projects are being planned to take full advantage of the massive boom in cycling in recent years to improve the quality of life in Sheffi eld and people’s general health. The City Council is aiming to build on their investment in hosting this year’s spectacular Tour de France cycle race by using it as a platform to encourage more people to take to their bikes. There are signifi cant economic, health and environmental benefi ts that an increase in cycling would bring to Sheffi eld. There was a major 80 per cent increase in the number of Sheffi eld residents cycling to work between 2001 and 2011 and cycling increased by 106 per cent in the city during that period. The Council’s Economic and Environmental Wellbeing Scrutiny and Policy Development Committee has undertaken a comprehensive exercise to gather information and comments from local cycling organisations and other interested partners as part of an inquiry into cycling in the city.Chair of the Committee, Cllr Cate McDonald said: “We need to get the whole of Sheffi eld cycling – not just healthy people or sport young males, but people of all ages and backgrounds, in urban and rural areas. The Committee endorsed the aim of the Get Britain Cycling report to see cycle use increase to 10 per cent of all journeys in 2025 and 25 per cent in 2050.It has been shown that lack of physical activity and a sedentary lifestyle can make people ill, and is very costly to health and social care. In Sheffi eld it is estimated that over 70 per cent of the population are not doing enough activity to maintain health. There are also important impacts

on the environment. Air pollution in Sheffi eld is estimated to account for around 500 deaths a year in the city and these deaths are almost all preventable. Most people cycling would help reduce air pollution and congestion. The report suggests that one of the biggest barriers for people to cycle more is concern for personal safety. Councillor Leigh Bramall, the Council’s Cabinet Member for Business, Skills and Development commented: “There has been a major increase in the number of people wanting to cycle in our city and it is in everyone’s interest for use to help make it easier and safer for them to do so. The Tour de France will raise the profi le of cycling in this region and it is our aim to build on the legacy provided by this exciting international event. We will continue to develop exciting schemes, such as the 20 mph zones, and to promote new cycle ways using existing green routes across the city”.Having considered all the evidence, the Committee developed 19 recommendations grouped into three themes: Strong leadership, Getting the Right Infrastructure in Place, and Getting People Cycling.Mick Nott, Chair of CycleSheffi eld added: “CycleSheffi eld proposed a local cycling inquiry last summer. We’re really pleased that the Council listened, sought and received support from all parties, set up this inquiry and invited us to be part of it. It certainly got a massive response, because there were nearly 300 submissions of evidence from national and local organisations and hundreds of individual Sheffi elders, who all shared their cycling experience and offered positive ideas.

GUIDE

A few weeks ago Club Historians featured one of our oldest and most popular entertainers, Dame Vera Lynn, who began her career in clubs.A not so old-timer who also has strong career links to working men’s is the ‘people’s tenor’ Russell Watson. Now 47, the lad from Salford was said to be discovered singing Nessun Dorma in Wigan club. There are actually a few claims to where and who ‘discovered’ his talent. But what we do know for sure is that he worked hard to make a living and prove his worth on the tough North Western club circuit before his rise to international fame. It was probably his rendition of Dessun Dorma at Old Trafford in 1999 that marked a major turning point in his career and the rest, they say, is just history. Russell’s history includes leaving school with no qualifi cations and going to work in a local factory where he sorted nuts and bolts. His history also includes battling two serious brain tumours, which nearly ended more than his career. He’s now back on the scene is no small way, having gone from singing in the likes of the popular Philharmonic Club in Blackpool to performing at the Birmingham Symphony Hall, one of the venues of his current UK tour. He also has a new album out, ‘Only One Man,’ released last November. Russell has much to be proud of and as he has strong links to the clubs, then we should also feel proud of his achievements. It’s testimony to the importance of the club circuit as a great training ground for live entertainment. Russell, four time Classical BRIT award winner, has sold more than seven million records worldwide. He even sang for the Pope! I had the pleasure of meeting him at the Philharmonic Club in Blackpool in 2011. We were there with the BBC1’s The One Show who were making a feature about clubs. Russell used to be a regular performer there and was nostalgic on his return, under quite different circumstances to his pre-fame days. It was my fi rst time at the Philharmonic but it seemed very familiar as clubs across the country do. The People’s Tenor talked on camera about his experiences while I talked about club history. It’s good to know that he’s doing well again but also that he hasn’t forgotten his club roots.

A poll* carried out for CAMRA, the Campaign for Real Ale, showed that people in the UK are fi ve times more likely to believe that wine is healthier to drink than beer. A survey of 1000 people showed that 67% thought wine drinking is most healthy, compared to only 13% for beer.Professor Charles Bamforth of the University of California, Davis and author of Beer, Health and Nutrition1 said “The myth that wine is in some way healthier than other alcoholic drinks dates back many years to research carried out in France, a predominantly wine drinking country. This suggested that moderate wine drinkers were healthier than non-drinkers. The crucial point is that it was a comparison with non-drinkers. When similar studies 2 were carried out in the Czech Republic, a nation of beer drinkers, just the same protective effect was seen with beer. This study showed the lowest risk of heart attacks in men who drank “almost daily or daily” consuming between 7- 16 pints of beer a week.”“The diffi culty of measuring the effect of drinking on health is

that differences can be masked by other aspects of lifestyle, such as smoking, diet and exercise. A paper 3 from the Harvard School of Public Health in the USA reanalysed the results from a large number of previous studies from around the world to take these differences into account. This research showed strong evidence that moderate consumption of any alcoholic drink is linked with a lower risk of heart disease and that most of this protection comes from the alcohol rather than any other component in the drink”. “There is nothing magic about wine and heart disease; the benefi t comes from moderate alcohol consumption. But moderation is the key word. If you drink too much, any health benefi ts to your cardiovascular system quickly disappear. This is equally true whether your favourite tipple is beer, cider, spirits or wine.” Colin Valentine, CAMRA Chairman said “Recently I met a friend who was rather grumpily nursing a glass of red wine having been told that it was better for him than the real ale that he loves. It’s good to be able to reassure him that this is nonsense; in

moderation, beer is just as healthy as wine. As well as the huge range of fl avours and styles available to suit any palette, the big advantage with beer is that it is low in alcohol. It’s much easier to ensure that you don’t overstep the mark and start to undo the good that a drink can do to your health. The important thing is to drink as part of a healthy lifestyle. A brisk walk to the pub for a pint of real ale will do you far more good than sitting on the sofa at home with a bottle of wine.”

BANK HOLIDAY AND TOO MUCH CHOCOLATE

Hello, I’m hoping you had a Happy Easter and managed to take advantage of the long Bank Holiday. Maybe, like me, you ate your own body weight in chocolate, or just enjoyed the fact we get two four day weeks. Whatever you managed to get up to the time just fl ys by, especially with young children. My wife and I often wonder what we used to do with our time before we had him. People often refer to this time of year and use the phrase ‘Wishing you a peaceful Easter’. I sometimes think to myself that whoever invented that phrase clearly never had kids that were hyperactive after too much chocolate! May will bring another couple of Bank Holidays and four day weeks for you hopefully. This month on Magic AM we are giving you the chance to go Digital - You can win a Digital Radio every day throughout April - We’ll play a song just after 8am each morning, we will play it again at some point through the day, when we do call in and win a Bush Digital Radio if you are on the correct line. Good Luck! If you want more info go to www.magicam.co.uk

‘PUB IDOL’ IS ANNOUNCEDThe dramatic fi nal of South Yorkshire’s very own talent show took place last week as 20 fi nalists proudly represented their local pub and battled it out in a hotly contested sing-off.Following two months of tears and triumphs for aspiring pop stars in the region, more than 200 people gathered in the Viper Rooms in Sheffi eld to watch the fi nal where Jessica Armstrong, representing Noahs Ark at Intake, took fi rst place.Organised by pub company Enterprise, more than 1,200 people took part in singing contest Pub Idol which launched in February and saw heats taking place in 20 pubs across South Yorkshire.Enterprise Divisional Director Duncan Marsden said: “Pubs have always been the cornerstone of community life in Yorkshire, but with so many communities across the UK facing pub closures, we launched Pub Idol to remind local people just how much fun your local can be. We are delighted to say the contest has done just that, and our pubs in the area have been

buzzing with excitement.“We congratulate Jessica who is truly a star in the making, and all of the runners up who did fantastically well under pressure to perform brilliantly. The level of talent in the area is truly incredible and we will be keeping a close eye on these budding singers and hope to see some of them rise to fame in the future.”After impressing a panel of judges including singer, comedian and pub owner Steve Womack and Gee Lananca of Songbird Recordings, talented Jessica won a day at Songbirds Recording Studio to create her own CD in addition to prize money of £1,000.Other fi nalists representing pubs across the region included runners up Laura Beresford representing The Bulls Head at Old Whittington, Nicola Scally representing The Green Dragon at Kimberworth and Jollie White from The Earl Marshall, Sheffi eld.

SATURDAY 26TH APRIL - TOP MALE DUO

Jez Lowe emerged from the folk clubs of North East England in the early 1980’s to become one of the most in-demand performers and most-covered songwriters on the UK acoustic scene. Fifteen or more albums later, he continues to reach new audiences around the world, and has just made a lasting impact as one of the main writers on the

BBC 2 Radio Ballads series ‘Ballad Of The Games’. In 2008, Jez was nominated as “Folksinger of the Year” in the BBC Folk awards, following the success of his album ‘Jack Common’s Anthem’ the previous year. After a retrospective live collection, entitled ‘Northern Echoes’ (winner of the Indie-Acoustic Award for “Best Lyrics” in 2009), last year’s follow-up CD,

entitled ‘WOTCHEOR!’ has surpassed that success, and has become Jez’s most popular album yet, spawning a series of special stage-shows and UK tours based on the themes of the album, to great acclaim.Check www.jezlowe.com for more information. Jez’s coming to Doncaster’s Roots Music Club on Friday 25th April. Under 17's free of charge

I’ve been out on the banks doing a bit of fi lming this week for best selling weekly fi shing magazine Angler’s Mail. As a freelance, I get asked to do all sorts of bits for a variety of quality publications (Sheffi eld Mercury included!) and fi lming short segments for the popular ‘Where to fi sh’ section falls within my remit, so I went over to Derby to fi lm a couple of the newly acquired Earl of Harrington’s AC waters at Marketon and Allestree Parks. I have to produce a few minutes of informative footage which will tell you, the reader, a little about the venue, access, prices, the fi sh and how to catch them which involves a considerable amount of preparation beforehand to fi nd the right information! As I’m sure you will appreciate, I have a face for radio, so do not feature in the short clips; instead I often ask other anglers who are quietly fi shing to say a few words to camera, often with varying degrees of success.....sometimes I defi nitely pick the wrong ones! This week, I patiently explained what my task was, how I intended to fi lm the angler, more or less every word I wanted him to say, and reminded him to look at the camera. After umpteen takes, during which I’ve never heard so many unintentional expletives in such a short space of time, I gave up and did it myself! If you think a camera interview is something you could do without fault, I would suggest you try it in front of the mirror with your friends watching...I bet you fi nd it more diffi cult than you thought...he certainly did!Strangely this week, I was contacted by a journalist from a prominent national newspaper who tweeted a message which I thought was so unusual, it must be a joke or a friend having some fun at my expense. Much to my surprise, further investigation revealed that the sender of the message was indeed genuine, and her intention was to pitch an idea at me; intrigued? So was I! More discussions followed, and it was fi nally revealed that this particular lady was in fact a fashion editor no less and wanted to write an article about me and the clothes I wear when I’m fi shing! I don’t know if you have ever seen what I wear, but it defi nitely isn’t what I would consider fashionable (I’ve never noticed anyone copying my style, put it that way!) nor would I think it stylish to the general consumer! When I disclosed the conversation to my wife, when she had stopped laughing, her fi rst words were; “...fashion? Why on earth have they called you?” After much ridicule by those closest to me, I’m not convinced that Fisherman’s Fashion will gain a regular slot... However, it may or may not go ahead, so if you want some tips on how to look like someone has dumped a chubby camoufl age duvet cover on the bank, then soaked it and thrown mud at it, then watch this space!

Millers & Rovers News 2013-14

TEN MAN ROVERS EARN POINT AT THE NEW DENRovers made one change to their starting line-up, Theo Robinson replacing Billy Sharp, who dropped to the bench.Rovers got the game underway defending the away end. Goalmouth incidents were few and not particularly exciting in the opening quarter hour of the game, with midfi eld play being the norm. In the 17th minute the home team won a corner followed two minutes later with successive corners, all of which came to nothing. The 25th minute saw Stevens, for the Rovers, get forward down the left before chipping a cross to the far post but a defender beat Brown to the ball and cleared. Past the half hour and Edwards blazed high and wide from distance on the Millwall right.A free kick from the Millwall right in the 35th minute brought a header from Maierhofer at close range but Johnstone saved. The 42nd minute brought a corner to the home team but McDonald, at the far post, had his header pushed out for another corner. Two minutes later and Meite went in high on Maierhofer and was shown a red card by the referee. From the resultant free kick Millwall were awarded a corner that Furman headed out to Beevers on the 18yard line but shot over the bar.In added time a free kick to Rovers halfway in the home half brought a good shout for a penalty but the referee didn’t want to know and awarded a corner kick, which was headed wide at the near post.

Millwall made a change at the start of the second half bringing on Steve Morison for Woolford. Millwall set the ball rolling and went straight on to the attack and penning the Rovers back in their penalty area. Rovers had moved Tamas to the centre of defence and Coppinger to right back, with Robinson dropping back to midfi eld.A couple of corners to Millwall were well defended, the second of which plainly went out off a Millwall player.Maierhofer then had a go from 20yards on the Millwall left, with Johnstne pushing it out for a corner. In the 56th minute, Bailey, for millwall, hit a rasper from 15yards to the right of goal that was going for the top corner when Johnstone got to it and tipped over. Then, a corner to the home team was headed over at the far post at close range by Bailey and Martin from the home left fi red high and wide from 25yards.In the 64th minute, a cross by Cotterill from the Rovers left to the far post was fumbled by Forde, who then appeared to bring down Brown in his efforts to retrieve the ball but again the referee wasn’t interested.Minutes later and a good build-up on the Rovers left gave Cotterill the chance of a shot from the left angle of the penalty area but he put wide of the near post.In the 70th minute, Baileyon the right edge of the Rovers penalty area lifted a shot high and wide of the target. Then Johnstone punched a ball away in a melee to Martin, who shot high over the bar. Millwall piled the pressure on winning several corners and bringing Johnstone into action constantly. But the Rovers defence withstood everything thrown at them and were greatly helped by Johnstone’s heroics in goal. At the end it was the Rovers pressing at the other end and then taking the ball to the corner fl ag.A well earned point for the Rovers after going down to ten men.

DICKOV: I AM IMMENSELY PROUDDoncaster Rovers manager Paul Dickov spoke to Rovers Player after his side’s hard fought 0-0 draw with Millwall at the New Den.“We didn’t think it was a red card at the time and we have seen it again, Ian Holloway hit the nail on the head in saying it was debatable if it was even a yellow card.“The magnitude and size of the game and to make a big decision that was wrong like that shouldn’t happen.“We felt we should have had a penalty in the fi rst half for handball, the lads hands are miles in the air and the ball hits it. “The penalty call on Chris Brown is blatant, it is a sore subject for me, I don’t want to make always look as if I am moaning about the big decisions, but they are just not going our way.“You talk about players putting their bodies on the line for the club and the fans, it was top class and I am immensely proud of them.

MILLERS BOSS PLEASED WITH HOME VICTORY...Rotherham United boss Steve Evans praised his players after they battled with a man down to gain all three points at home to Port Vale. Richie Smallwood saw red minutes before the half-time break, but Kieran Agard’s 21st league goal of the season ensured the points stayed in South Yorkshire. “I think that fi rst and foremost we’re very proud to have made the play offs and we know what we get from them (the team); we get hunger and desire, effort and passion which has led to the win today. We were poor fi rst half and Paul Raynor identifi ed that we didn’t really look on the front foot in the warm-up, but we regrouped well in the second half and were better with 10 men.”Smallwood’s red card came whilst the scores were level, and the Millers boss says he will need to assess it in more detail before deciding whether to appeal the decision, but the important thing for the club is to continue picking up points and having a squad ready ahead of the play offs. “We need to take a closer look at it,” added Evans. “Like the rest of the ground we were a bit stunned, but we’ll have a look at it, and if he’s gone in as he shouldn’t then he’ll serve his three matches, but if not then we’ll consider an appeal. It’s just essential that we win every game we play, and get some players more minutes out on the pitch.”

They then took the Championship on Wednesday night with an impressive 6-2 away win over Houghton Main, thanks to goals from Alex Rippon (2), Scott Bates, Jack Hall, Lee Hudson and Samuel McKay. This time the loss came 4-2 against Millmoor Juniors at Grange Park. Mused Salem starred for Millmoor, scoring twice.

Division TwoNorth Gawber Colliery won the Division Two title on Saturday with 5-1 win over Boynton Sports, which was symbolic of the league season they have had. Again on the occasion in it was Jordan Lodge with the vital goal. North Gawber have been dominant in Division Two this season and boast the best defence and attack in all of the County Senior Leagues.Kingstone United were unable to bounce back from their loss to the leaders, as they were beaten 3-1 at home by mid-table Maltby Main Reserves at Barnsley Sports College on Saturday.Sheffi eld Lane Top climbed into fourth place after claiming four points this week. Charlton hit back from two goals down at Hillsborough to claim a hugely signifi cant 3-2 win in their bid to avoid relegation. The Owls hit the ground running in the Easter Monday clash with Atdhe Nuhiu and Chris Maguire striking early to give Wednesday the advantage. But the pendulum soon swung in favour of Charlton, when Man of the Match Marvin Sordell hit the fi rst of his impressive treble, moments after falling 2-0 behind. The Addicks hitman, on loan from Bolton, added a second on the stroke of half time and completed the turnaround after the break to claim his hat-trick, the matchball and a priceless three points. It was Charlton who were desperate for the points, in the thick of a relegation battle, but it was Wednesday who fl ew out of the traps and notched an early goal.Miguel Llera chipped over the top for Nuhiu and the in-form striker hit a sweet half volley that went in off the post, leaving Ben Hamer helpless in the Addicks goal.To compound matters for the visitors, Wednesday doubled their lead moments later in an explosive opening.Nuhiu squared for Maguire, who regained his balance in the area before blasting beyond the outstretched arms

of Hamer.Charlton, though, were to have their say in the frantic start and halved the defi cit immediately, when Sordell raced through on goal and applied a cute fi nish to divert past Chris Kirkland. The game was high tempo, with chances coming thick and fast and Wednesday asking most of the questions.Kieran Lee came within a whisker of netting his maiden strike but fi red wide from Michail Antonio’s low centre, with Hamer rooted to the spot.Having weathered the early storm and kept the difference to just one goal, the Addicks hauled themselves back in the game in the stroke of half time.It was that man Sordell again, who controlled in the area a thumped low and hard across Kirkland to put the visitors back on terms.Rejuvenated after a slow start to the game, Charlton threatened fi rst following the restart with Sordell

pulling the trigger on the angle inside the area, but Kirkland made a good block at his near post. But the outstanding Addicks striker wasn’t to be denied his hat-trick and just past the hour, Sordell completed treble. The Bolton loanee took a through ball into his stride before clipping over Kirkland to put his side on course for three valuable points. The momentum had swung the way of the visitors, who were pressing for a fourth as Jordan Cousins saw his stinging drive defl ected wide for a corner.Late pressure could not bring about an equaliser for Wednesday, as the Addicks held on to move further away from the Championship trapdoor.

SHEFFIELD UNITED NEWS 2 13-14SHEFFIELD UNITED NEWS 2 13-14SHEFFIELD UNITED NEWS 2 13-14ANOTHER CLEAN SHEET FOR BLADES VS TRANMERE

Four points over the Easter period and a third consecutive clean sheet was not enough as United’s slim play-off chances evaporated at Tranmere Rovers.A 0-0 draw, combined with Peterborough United’s result on Easter Monday ensures the Blades cannot mathematically make the end of season play-offs.For United’s 54th competitive fi xture of the campaign, boss Clough freshened up the starting XI - he made no less than fi ve changes with Hill, Porter, McGinn, Davies and 18-year-old Dimaio all in from the start, whilst Collins took the captain’s armband with Doyle rested.McGinn appeared the more advanced of the midfi elders in the early stages but Tranmere made the better start in terms of territory. In the opening 15 minutes the home side had two penalty appeals turned down and Akpa Akpro and Cassidy tried their luck from distance. The best effort of the opening exchanges, though, arrived on 14 minutes when Lowe held off Collins and saw his chip hit a post - the rebound also fell to the Tranmere captain but his second effort was straight at Howard.United’s early endeavours saw Davies whip in a couple of teasing crosses, Dimaio hit a half-volley from 20 yards and, on 21 minutes, Porter lost his marker but headed over a right-wing corner.Another Dimaio half-volley, again the result of a Brayford throw, was closer but still not on target and the better chances were still falling to Tranmere. Around the

half-hour mark, Lowe curled wide after a slip by Collins and Howard was called upon to push over a Brown shot.As half-time approached, United switched to a 4-4-2 system, Murphy joining Porter in attack, whilst Tranmere were forced into their second change through injury, but neither team were able to break the deadlock before the interval. It appeared that the fi rst half display prompted boss Clough to make a double change at the break. Doyle and Baxter took over from McGinn and Porter and the Blades made a better start but were unable to test goalkeeper Fon Williams.Maguire was the fi rst in the referee’s book, for halting the run of Cassidy, and on 55 minutes Taylor went close to converting Power’s free-kick with a fl icked header. Cassidy went close soon after but his shot from the edge of the box was blocked by a number of yellow shirts.United’s shouts for a penalty were ignored on 66 minutes despite Murphy staying down under Taylor’s challenge and moments later Clough was forced into his third and fi nal change when Freeman took over from Maguire with Hill moving to a central position.Brayford fi red wide on the run and a Power shot was hammered at Hill as the game began to open up in the fi nal 20

minutes. Another fl icked header from Taylor was wide, this time from Brown’s delivery. On 84 minutes Baxter cut in from the left, held off his marker, and forced a full-length save from Fon Williams in front of the Blades fans and Brayford headed wide the resulting corner. A minute later Cassidy failed with what looked the easiest chance of the day, missing a header across goal from a matter of yards and then Doyle blocked from Lowe as two minutes of injury-time was announced. The game remained open late on but neither side were unable to strike that vital blow which would have won the game.

Tranmere: Fon Williams, Holmes, Taylor, Lowe, Cassidy (Stockton 90), Power, Jennings, Brown, Ridehalgh (Rowe 41), Akpa Akpro (Kirby 19), Pennington. Unused: Morris, Bolland, Arthurworrey, Mooney.

Blades: Howard, Brayford, Maguire (Freeman 67), Hill, Porter (Baxter 45), McGinn (Doyle 45), Collins, Coady, Davies, Murphy, Dimaio. Unused: Flynn, Paynter, Long, Kennedy.

TIREDNESS CONTRIBUTEDNigel Clough admitted tiredness contributed to a below par performance against Tranmere Rovers at Prenton Park on Easter Monday.Looking back on the goalless draw on the Wirral, which ended United’s hopes of a top six fi nish, the Blades boss remarked:“We have put so much into our performances in the last two or three months and it was always going to take its toll, but we are pleased with a point and delighted with another clean sheet.“We have to start looking ahead to next season, when you come to places like this you try to win the game, but if you can’t win it is important not to lose.“We were leggy in training on Sunday, having worked very hard on Friday to beat Stevenage on the back of the disappointment at Wembley.“We needed some fresh legs and we were delighted to get young Connor (Dimaio) his fi rst 90 minutes of professional football.”Clough continued: “We were poor in the fi rst-half, Tranmere bossed the game, we had a good chance from a corner, but created little in open play.“We improved in the second-half and could have won the game, but we just looked so tired and that was evident late on when Jamie Murphy couldn’t get the ball out of his feet when he had a chance to win the match.“Harry Maguire came off with cramp in both legs, so we have to rest the lads up ready for Port Vale on Friday.”
