Copleys ColumnWhen I was young. Bon re Night used to be on the night of the 5th November only, but these days it lasts over a week. This year, as per usual, it rained, causing the abandonment of many organised res. Gone are the days of a ve shilling box of reworks containing a few sparklers, penny bangers, two-penny cannons, jumping jacks and Catherine wheels, now one single rework can cost 20.This year, I attended a charity rework display at the Fox and Hounds, Marsh Lane, near Eckington to bene t the charity P.A.C.T. Admission was 4, and in view of the fact that the impressive rework display (which seemed to last for an age!) must have cost a fortune, it was good value for money. My main reason for attending was to renew my acquaintance with a really good singer, Sarah Kidman, and bless her she was singing in a trailer outside. To say it was cold is an understatement, yet she gave a superb performance, being the true professional that she is. It was also nice to see her parents, particularly her father, Paul Lockwood, with whom I have always had a good relationship. The Fox and Hounds are to be congratulated for the management of the night with a professionally manned display, and plenty of stewards in evidence and also a rst aider. On Thursday night, It was our annual Mercury Awards, held at Crookes Club, where my table had many well-known faces including Lifetime Achievement winner, the wonderful Bobby Knutt, Jimmy Patton of the legendary Patton Brothers, Phoebe, top Abba tribute girls Diana Edwards and Sarah Fearnley, Mel Day and my mate Dave Perkins, who is splendid in his Michael Buble tribute. A notable absentee was Glen Dale, lead singer of sixties top band The Fortunes, who is not very well at the moment, and I am sure you join me in wishing him well.I had booked my favourite singer/ songwriter, Vincent, on the evening at the Victoria, Dron eld on the same evening, and was sorry to miss him, but I have received some excellent reports and requests to re- book him as soon as possible.

On a tip from Chris Waddle earlier this year, I went to the Devonshire Arms at Dore to see an Elvis impersonator, Mark Elvis Nixon, and he was fantastic. Talking to him after the show, he told me he was doing a summer season on Majorca. As I had two summer holidays booked on the island, I made a point of going to see him again at the Palma Nova Palace Hotel, where again he did not disappoint. I am delighted to reveal that he returns to the Devonshire this Saturday, and needless to say I shall be there along with a few friends who are Elvis fans. There has been plenty of Elvis on television this week with a fantastic programme on ITV last Friday with all this iconic singers greatest hits. The two top selling albums this Christmas are sure to be Elvis and the Beatles.

COMPETITIONWe have kindly been given 5 pairs of tickets (worth 56) for us to give away to lucky readers to witness this amazingly entertaining spectacular. All you have to do is send your name and daytime telephone number to [email protected] before noon on Friday 29th November.Winners are drawn at random

CHRISTMAS LIGHTSChristmas Lights Switch On & Moor Christmas Party at Shef eld City CentreSunday 17 November 2013 - 13.00 17.00

The biggest day in the citys festive calendar, over 35,000 people are expected to watch Shef eld sparkle as they enjoy the great variety of music, street performances and childrens activities. There will be Real Reindeer, Traditional Music, Father Christmas, Food Stalls, Street Entertainment and much more.

SHEFFIELDS NEW MOOR MARKETThe Moor Market will be open to the public from 10am on Monday 25 November 2013.The development on the corner of the Moor and Earl Street will occupy a full block on the Moor, one of Shef elds best-known shopping streets. The new market will bene t from the purpose-built multi-storey car park on Earl Street and excellent bus services on adjoining Eyre Street and Cumberland Street. The 79,000 sq ft market building has 190 indoor stalls and will replace Castle Market which is now seen as poorly located for customers and in a run-down state.

THE FUTURE OF HOSPITAL CARE FOR FRAIL ELDERLY PATIENTSHealth Service Journal and partner Serco invite you to join a new commission that will shape the debate around the future of hospital care for frail elderly patients.

The most pressing issue facing the NHS hospital sector is the care of frail older people, many of whom have multiple long-term co-morbidities including dementia. The NHS is to some extent a victim of its own success in keeping frail elderly patients alive and healthy, while ongoing social and demographic trends in the developed world are exacerbating the challenges. The commission presents an opportunity to inform the design of public policyThe issue is widely recognised. However, most proposed solutions are linked to service redesign that moves care for frail co-morbid elderly patients out of hospitals, providing alternatives in peoples homes or local communities. Past experience, and the lack of new money for double-running the new system with our current one, strongly suggests such service redesign solutions will take some years to deliver signi cant change. That is why HSJ and partner Serco are launching the Commission on Hospital Care for Frail Older People, chaired by Dame Julie Moore. It will be relentlessly practical in its focus on what needs to happen in the short term, while forging strategies for the medium and long term. The commission will meet to hear and discuss witness evidence over two days in late 2013. It will then publish a scoping report in early 2014, with prominent coverage in HSJ.Following a series of half-day evidence sessions in 2014, the main report will be produced in September 2014 and of cially launched at the 2014 Foundation Trust Network annual conference, with further coverage in HSJ.An update to the main report will be produced in March 2015 to track progress and inform health policy debates in the run-up to the May 2015 general election. How you can submit evidenceReaders of HSJ are at the forefront of addressing the challenges in this vital area of health and social care. We are keen to hear your views on the following:What is happening now in care for the frail elderly in your organisation and health economy? What needs to change to improve care for this important section of the population? What examples of imitable and scalable good practice in care for the frail elderly have you used or observed? What errors or bad practice should be avoided? We ask you to submit evidence up to a maximum of 1,800 words as a broadly compatible document attached to an email to [email protected]. Please note that by submitting evidence, you grant HSJ and the commission unreserved permission to use, share and reproduce the text submitted. Why a commission? The commission presents an opportunity to inform the design of public policy in an area with major implications for the nancial and overall sustainability of the NHS.For at least the next ve years, NHS hospitals will face an increase in the number and proportion of older, sicker patientsThe current situation was well summarised in a March 2013 HSJ interview with president-elect of the British Geriatrics Society, Professor David Oliver, who has just stepped down as the Department of Healths national clinical director for older people. He said: It is absolute La-la-land to think were going to be in a situation any time soon where older people dont still keep piling through the doors of general hospitals. The lived reality on the ground is that hospitals are daily on black alert, opening any at surface they can to put beds in, turning ambulances away. Im not saying its the wrong thing to try and [reduce admissions] but we have to translate that aspiration to reality and theres not a load of convincing evidence yet of anywhere where focusing on prevention has

actually led to reducing overall costs in the health and social care economy. The challenge for hospitalsProfessor Olivers striking views speak an evident truth: policy experts suggest that for at least the next ve years, NHS hospitals will face an increase in the number and proportion of older, sicker patients (see the reading list below for references and sources). These patients will arrive in many hospitals still running along service and staf ng models that have changed little over the last decade. We need to throw a spotlight on the level of care offered to older people who are hospitalised and to track changes in the quality of that careThis increase comes as national cost pressures exerted through tariff reductions combine with the actions of local commissioners keen to drive service change. Not all will be content to wait until alternative services are in place before driving disinvestment. There will be an understandable tendency for many in positions of in uence to shy away from this problem. All potential solutions are either very costly or long term. However, hospitals do not have the luxury of either time or spare money. They must address this problem head-on and seek practical solutions that make a difference in the short-to-medium term. Failure to do so runs the signi cant risk of care quality and dignity scandals and ballooning waiting lists. We need to throw a spotlight on the level of care offered to older people who are hospitalised; to track changes in the quality of that care; to sounds warnings where appropriate and necessary; and to propose practical solutions, however uncomfortable. The commission will monitor care of the frail elderly in NHS hospitals between autumn 2013 and spring 2015. Its purpose will be to:collect evidence on the care of the frail elderly;note signi cant changes in that care (for better or worse); identify pressures undermining care quality; identify solutions that are improving care; and champion those solutions, warn of the dangers and ensure the issue remains at the forefront of public debates over the performance and future of the NHS.How the commission will workThe commission will report three times. It will launch its initial scoping report in early 2014, followed by a main report in October 2014. This will then be updated in March 2015 (prior to the general election).HSJ will provide the secretariat for the commission, led by HSJ Comment editor Andy Cowper, who will write the reports. The secretariat will have three main roles:1. To collect evidence relevant to the ve criteria set out above and to ensure this is circulated among commission members.2. To organise the meetings of the commission.3. To write the reports that capture the commissions views. How the commissions work will be promotedThe work of the commission will feature on a dedicated section of hsj.co.uk, where all reports will be published in full. It will also receive extensive coverage in HSJ. Short video interviews may be recorded, to be displayed alongside each report. HSJ will also webcast a 45-minute webinar discussing the contents of each report.Printed copies of the reports will be sent to the prime minister, deputy PM, health secretary, leader of the opposition and opposition health spokesman, as well as chief executives of the commissioning board NHS England, the Care Quality Commission, Monitor and other leading stakeholder bodies and system leaders.Digital copies will be sent to every relevant hospital trust chief executive.Make a difference now by submitting your views to [email protected].

SHEFFIELD CHIPPY WINS PRESTIGIOUS AWARDMarishells Chippy of Eccles eld in Shef eld has joined the sh frying elite from across the UK, by scooping the prestigious Fish and Chip Quality Award. It is the rst and only shop in Shef eld to hold this award. The National Federation of Fish Friers (NFFF), the trade body that represents the nation's sh and chip shops, runs the scheme as a way of raising standards within the sh and chip trade and enhancing the pro le of the industry. The scheme is a way of rewarding and promoting shops that provide good quality products and high standards of hygiene, as well as friers who show a high level of competence. Owner Marie Slingsby says, "I am very proud to have achieved this award after thirty-three years at this shop. I thank my daughter Shelly (the shop name is actually a combination of her name and my

own) as well as my loyal team and all the customers who have supported me through the years." One customer who has been getting his sh and chips at this shop since childhood comments, "I can honestly say I've never found a better chippy, all the customers know it and with this award you've proved it." To qualify, each shop has to go through an inspection by an NFFF Approved Assessor who assesses the shop's presentation, hygiene and cleanliness, staff training, equipment, frying and sales skills and most importantly the quality of the cooked product. This award sets the new benchmark for quality within the industry. It will signal to the consumer that they can buy with con dence where the award is displayed, and it will encourage more outlets to raise their standards. Each Fish and Chip Quality Award is valid for two years and retention is dependent on standards being maintained as validated by NFFF of cials and appointed assessors. For more information contact: Marishells Chippy, 21-23 St. Mary's Lane, Eccleshill, Shef eld S35 9YE Tel: 0114 2578262 or 07890 928314.You can visit Marishells Thursday, Friday and Saturday Noon till 8pm

DAVID & LINDAS GAMBIAN MISSIONliving and working amongst the community to help with projects such as building schools, drainage systems, lighting and many of the daily basics we take for granted here in England. The Gambia is the smallest independent nation in Africa, almost entirely surrounded by Senegal, with almost half the

population living below the poverty line.Over thirty years ago David and Linda booked a holiday, simply to help ease Lindas asthma. Finding it a happy and welcoming environment which helped her health, they began to return more regularly and became involved in local life. Now, over twenty like-minded friends meet up each year in November, living in the local villages and helping with projects. As David says, it only costs 60 per year to educate a child in school, and throughout the year in England the group work to raise funds to help with their projects. If you are interested in helping them, visit their website www.schools4gambia.co.uk to see some of their work in pictures.

This weekend Radio Nightingale provided three services to mark Remembrance Sunday. The programmes started with our now annual outside broadcast of the live service from the Rotherham Minster. My position once again was in the studio taking in the broadcasts from the Minster and Cenotaph whilst Sarah took to the streets to provide them. It was a cold but sunny day for the people of Rotherham to gather once more to show their respect for the hundreds of thousands of servicemen and women who have given their lives in the many con icts after and including the First World War. The service was as always led by the Vicar of Rotherham, Canon David Bliss. Following the traditional Remembrance Service, the parade re-assembled on the High Street to march to the Clifton Park Cenotaph lead by South Yorkshire Police Band to arrive in plenty of time for the silence at 11.00am.Straight after the Minster and Cenotaph services, we joined the regular programme from the Hospital Chaplaincy team as they conducted their own Remembrance Service at the Rotherham General Hospital. Then later in the day the Service of Remembrance from the Freemasons of Bassetlaw, led by Father Bill Bergin, rounded off the commemorations on Radio Nightingale.Pictures and audio from the Remembrance Services are available on our Facebook page.Radio Nightingale broadcasts 24 hours a day, 7 days a week for the patients and staff of the Rotherham General Hospital on 945 &1350mw, Hospedia and online. THE TOYS ARE BACK IN TOWN

VOICE OF THE NIGHTINGALERADIO NIGHTINGALEby Mel Jaques

This weekend Radio Nightingale provided three services to mark

    NIGHTINGALE

Remembrance Sunday has been and gone once again. The Sunday nearest to November 11th at 11am marks the time that the Lewis guns, howitzers, and all the other weapons of death and destruction stopped ring at the end of WW1. Millions of people, proudly wearing their poppies, stop during two minutes silence to re ect on the sacri ces of those who gave their lives for the good not only our country but for future generations all over the world. Its not just about WW1. I know that many club members would have stood still at the appointed hour, as there are very strong connections between clubs and the armed services that persist to this day. After WW1, those who came home were war-weary and had experienced some terrible things. Nevertheless, they wanted to retain the sense of camaraderie they had known in the trenches. They had been united by the horrors they saw and didnt want to lose that connection as it was hard to speak about their experiences to loved ones. One way of doing this was to establish of Ex-Servicemens Clubs, as well as a few Done our Bit clubs. In Coventry, some members of the same battalion formed the Howitzers Club. It was a place where they be with former brothers in arms and also have some good times. Royal British Legion clubs were also invited to af liate to the CIU and hundreds did exactly that. More Ex-Servicemens Clubs were set up after WW2 as another generation of service personnel sought to keep those special bonds in peacetime. The WW1 old soldiers are now all gone, and WW2 veterans are dwindling in numbers. Their clubs have declined as well but some remain and still play an important role in their communities. Another link with clubs and the services can be seen in the efforts to raise money for Help the Heroes, a charity dedicated to raising funds for injured members of the armed services. Club members do all kinds of things throughout the year to raise money for this charity. Perhaps we should be keeping count because it probably runs into millions by now. Some clubs choose to fundraise for their own members who have come back from war with life-changing injuries. Whether for individuals or the collective cause, club efforts should be congratulated. Remembrance Day is something that lasts the whole year particularly for those who have lost loved ones in con icts.

A DAY FOR REMEMBRANCECLUBHISTORIANS.CO.UKby Ruth Cherrington

Well now were through with Bon re Night and Halloween, attentions are turning to Christmas and what to get for the kids?As usual at this time of year, were being told what the most popular present ideas are. As we mentioned on the show the other day, its good to see some of the old rm favourites still rating very highly. Monopoly, Lego and the Action Man still stand their ground in the latest top 50 for 2013 along with a radio controlled fairy which actually hovers above your hand, which actually sounds quite scary and a little odd!!Anyway, we asked what your all-time favourite toy is and to pick a tenuously linked toy song. Suggestions for choices of toy included the game Buckaroo, Matchbox cars, of which I had thousands, and good old teddy bears. When it came to song titles we had anything by the Toys, Janet Kays Silly Games, Cindy Incidentally (as in the doll), Action man-eater, Jack in a Box and anything by the Scalextric Light Orchestra. Lots of brilliant responses via phone, text, email and facebook. As always, your input on the show is fantastic. Join us each morning for a little mission to start the day and join in with the fun. Theres also all the latest traf c and travel with me, the morning news, details on whats going on, chances to win all sorts of prizes and just great songs from across the decades.
