THE OFFICIAL UK PUZZLE CLUB

Gibsons have many exciting new additions joining their ever-growing range in 2014, including innovative jigsaw concepts and over 70 new puzzles!

Mystery Mayhem is a new concept that has been added to the range, and it’s no ordinary jigsaw. Inside the innovative box design are two jigsaw puzzles, the first is a hectic 1000 piece jigsaw that matches the image on the box. After completing the 1000 piece, the next challenge is to find out what triggered the mayhem, by completing the second 200 piece puzzle, but this time there is no guide to help find out what caused the chaos! The Mystery Mayhem range is for those who are brave enough to rise to the challenge!

The ‘Discoveries’ range is another new concept that has been released this year and the two jigsaws are painted by artist Steve Read. Tiger Sanctuary and Kitten Capers may merely seem like beautiful wildlife paintings, but there are certain additions that even a keen eye will miss! Hidden in the tall trees and bundles of hay are the silhouettes and shapes of jungle wildlife and hiding kittens, waiting to be detected and the challenge is to find all 14.

‘Keeping up with the Joneses’ follows Mr Jones and his wife on their travels after they have won £10.5 million on the National Lottery. What makes the jigsaws quirky and different is that they are created by the same artist who made ‘Santa’s Midnight Magic’, Keith Drury. He uses a unique ‘3D paint digital paint style’ which means that everything in the picture is actually a model he has created, not painted on canvas. If you look closely at both jigsaws, you can also see funny little additions such as the lady who is holding a board in each puzzle that appears to have very strong beliefs on how the Joneses should spend their money, and the guy who is reading the newspaper in an armchair outside who seems to have more and more duck friends in each instalment. These jigsaws are possibly the quirkiest in our range, appealing especially to those who will enjoy the funny extras that you only notice when you look closely.

To commemorate the centenary of the First World War and the 70 years that have passed since D-Day, Gibsons have released a selection of military puzzles. Mike Jupp is back once again with another hilarious jigsaw that captures the comical and ridiculous side of everyday life. I Love Winter is filled to the brim with ludicrous cartoons, including a run-away giant snowball, an out of control dung-cart, and a frozen OAP!

Obviously we can’t feature all the 70 new Gibsons puzzles in this newsletter, so we’ll look at them over the next few months.

JIG’S CORNERMark and Juliet are definitely keeping me on my toes - showing them the ropes. There is such a lot to remember! And yes it is very cold up here, but at least there hasn’t been any snow yet…!

Apologies for the delays in receiving your Ravensburger puzzles. Despite Ravensburger helping us to put the Newsletter together, the puzzles we agreed to feature weren’t actually available when the Newsletter was released, so we had to wait until the supplier released them at differing times during the month. We are hoping that there won’t be any problems this month!

Looks like Gibsons have finally joined the Wasgij (Falcom/Jumbo) & What If (Ravensburger) ‘puzzle that you don’t see’ designs with their new Mystery Mayhem designs. Hopefully you’ll find their slight twist on the idea just as challenging and just as much fun !

Also, if you know of any Jigsaw Festivals taking place this year, please let us know and we will be happy to advertise them.

Happy puzzling!Jig

After the new Wasgij releases last month, one of our members called to let us know of a challenge she’d encountered a couple of weeks before. As an avid jigsaw and Wasgij collector she often buys the 2 x 1000 selections along with all the others. These are great value for money and twice the fun of a single puzzle…. unless you have a grand-daughter that tries to help by opening both puzzles into 1 large pile of pieces for you – thinking that one of the bags contained the edges! It only took them two weeks to complete both puzzles – the puzzles have now gone back in their individual bags in the box with clear labels on them!

What a challenge Elaine, and both puzzles done in 2 weeks – that’s amazing. It’s lovely to hear of younger family members joining in the puzzling fun, but trying to sort out 2 standard puzzles from a mixed pile would be difficult enough, I think you deserve a medal for managing it with Wasgij’s !! I wonder if any other members have had family members accidentally being not quite so helpful too – please write in and let us know.

Congratulations to Heather Urmston for remembering the gifts on the 5th Day of Christmas. Your puzzle is on its way.

Also, as mentioned last month, Gibsons are excited to announce the release of four new Thomas Kinkade jigsaws to add to your collection. The puzzles come in a variety of piece counts and feature brightly lit cottages and frosty lakes. The Open Gate, Sussex is a tranquil 500 piece puzzle that depicts a gaggle of geese returning home as the day draws to a close. The second addition to the ever-growing range is Evening at Swanbrooke Cottage. The 1000 piece painting is filled with beautiful flowers that are bursting with colour and surround the bubbling brook. Holiday Traditions is perhaps Kinkade’s most festive 1000 piece jigsaw yet. The painting shows the holiday festivities of a small town as they gather around the nativity scene. As stars twinkle in the clear sky, the snow covered Christmas tree watches over the little stone church. Finally, the last jigsaw is a 2x500 collection that features Nanette’s Cottage and Spirit of Christmas. Both jigsaws are filled with colour and commemorate Thomas’ wife Nanette. The stunning sunset and cloudy twilight sky radiate warmth and tranquillity as children play outside the thatched cottages. Thomas Kinkade, the Painter of the Light’s, jigsaws are always a favourite among puzzlers because of the calm and serene scenes he creates with the use of vibrant colours, and the messages his artwork conveys to observers. Thomas hoped that his paintings would bring hope and inspiration to others, and encourage people to slow down, appreciate the little details in life, and to look for beauty in the world around us.

Charity DonationsAs you know, we donate all the ‘spare’ pennies from your jigsaw orders to our chosen charity and many of you very generously add extra donations to your order too. Please send us your charity suggestions and we’ll let you know who we have chosen in issue 104

ISSUE 101

February 2014

Normandy Breakout by Nicholas Trudgian, D-Day Landings by Bill Perrings and Preparations for D-Day by Kevin Walsh are 500 and 1000 piece puzzles that depict a squadron of spitfires, typhoons and tanks preparing for the invasion of northern France that occurred 70 years ago. To honour the 100 years that have passed since WW1, Robert Opie has produced a beautiful 1000 piece montage jigsaw that depicts a collection of WW1 memorabilia, including famous posters, magazines and post cards that were produced a century ago.

Finally, 2014 sees the release of the 13th puzzle in the ‘I Love’ range, I Love Winter! Mike Jupp is back once again with another hilarious jigsaw that captures the comical and ridiculous side of everyday life. I Love Winter is filled to the brim with ludicrous cartoons, including a run-away giant snowball, an out of control dung-cart, and a frozen OAP!
