This year’s cross country squad made a run at region in October but fell short as they went up against top dogs Mercer County , Boyle County, and Bowling Green. We caught up with senior 5k runner Luis Medrano this week to ask him what kind of preparation he did this summer to get ready for one of the hardest sports in all the land. “We would run from the high school all the way to Minute Mart and back to the high school; we would come to the track and run 400 meters as fast as we could to get or endur-ance up.” He said it was tough but well worth it when he knew he had fin-ished the race. For those of you who don’t know about cross country, the high school kids run a 5k race which is really hard but it took hard work for them to get it done and they did it! Great job guys! Go Lakers!!

The Russell County Lakers took the field Friday night in the first round of the KHSAA 4A playoffs, taking on the Knights of Marion County. Russell County came into the game off of the first undefeated regular season since 1983. Russell County dominated throughout, shutting out the Knights 52-0. Nick Britt rushed for 232 yards and three touchdowns. Kennedy McFarland was Defensive player of the game, recording three sacks. Friday, November 9th, Russell County will host the Rebels from Boyle County. The Rebels come into the game with a 7-4 record on the season. This Boyle County team has a bit of a deceiving record, as their losses have come against the likes of Highlands, Danville, John Hardin, and Lexington Catho-lic. The Rebels are led by Quarterback Casey Whittle, who has thrown for over 1800 yards and 22 touchdowns this year. Running back Seph Burke has 15 rushing touchdowns on the year. The Lakers come into the game, sporting an 11-0 record for the first time in school history. The Lakers have quality wins against Whitley County and Knox Central. The Lakers have one of the best running backs in 4A in Nick Britt. Britt has rushed for 1,853 yards and 31 touchdowns. QB Barton Mann has thrown for over 1400 yards and 10 touchdowns. Kicker Lucas Williams is one of the best kicker/punter/kickoff specialists in the country with 84 touch-backs on the year. This will be the biggest game in recent Laker history. A large crowd from Boyle County is expected to travel to Laker Stadium for the game so seating for the game will be interesting to see. Russell County High School encour-ages all students, teachers, parents, and Russell County residents to come out to the game and support your Mighty Laker football team in their quest for a state championship!

Lakers Easily Dispose of Knights, Look Ahead to Boyle County

Sense Tuesday was Election Day we went around asking what they thought about the election of the person that will be running our country for the next four years. Not only that but we also asked what some of them thought about the whole process in terms of electing our government officials.

Here’s what they had to say:Austin Hadley: It’s stupid, I think that it should be based on the popular vote instead of the electoral college because it’s not even like we get a say.Aaron Knight: What were we thinking???Zac Oaks: Oh yeah, go Obama! (Sarcastically) I believe that it is the worst decision we have made sense we put Jimmy Carter in the white house.Jessica Jones: Well I definitely don’t think that we will be doing any better as a country four years from now.Ryan Sciegaj: No comment.Derek Smith: Man, I think we are on a downhill spiral as a country. We need Jesus.Taylor Cravens: I wish Obama hadn’t won.Sarah Copley: Well Obama sure isn’t doing a good job right now, why did we vote for him again??Blake Ellis: Well, I don’t think either one of them would be doing a very good job.Brandon Crews: Hey man, they legalized pot in Colorado!! Yes!!!Bailey Brown: I don’t know.Kayla Abrell: Well, I didn’t want Obama to win.In case you hadn’t noticed…..our high school seems to be very lop-sided when it comes to who they wanted to win the presidential race. This is very understandable considering we are a republican county and state.
