Denmark SnippetsHEALTH TIPS – catching up on sleep! There is nothing worse than a bad night’s sleep... except two or three bad night’s sleep in a row. The causes of poor sleep or insomnia are numerous, the way it presents can also vary. Insomnia can fall under either sleep onset insomnia (difficulty getting to sleep) or sleep maintenance insomnia (waking during the night). The really unlucky ones can have a combination of the two. Thankfully there are many very successful ways to treat insomnia. Of course chatting to a qualified practitioner will help accurately diagnose the cause of the problem, however herbs such as valerian, lemon balm, Zizyphus and St Johns Wort are all very effective treatments for insomnia. Magnesium, the mineral for relaxation is the best place to start, and often alone can give significant relief to sleep problems which can be worse pre-menstrually and during late stages of pregnancy. Poor sleep patterns can also be caused by stress, coffee or sugar consumption later in the evening, alcohol consumption and hormone changes (menopause).Always consult your herbalist or naturopath to ensure you are taking the right herb, and make sure it will not interfere with other supplements or medication. Classic Walk Around 100 enthusiastic people got up early on Mother’s Day morning to raise funds for breast cancer research at the annual Mother’s Day Classic Walk/Run in Denmark with over $2,000 going to the National Breast Cancer Foundation’s research programs. The event encourages the community to support the nation’s largest charity event by walking or running with family, friends and colleagues and by dedicating their morning to raise funds for this worthwhile cause. There was a wonderful mix of all age groups and families attending the Classic with many participants walking in support or memory of a loved one touched by breast cancer. The positive atmosphere on the day is an opportunity to celebrate the life of survivors, pay tribute to those lost to the disease and to enjoy doing something special on Mother’s Day. The Committee is already planning next year’s event which will celebrate the fifth year of the Mother’s Day Classic being held in Denmark! Jennifer Langridge
