New Initiatives

Supplementary Nutritional Programme

The aim of Indian Cancer Society is to provide nutritional supplements to children suffering from cancer belonging to the economically weaker section of society, who are advised by the treating paediatric oncologist to take nutritional supplement but cannot afford them. Supporting us in this endeavour are the External Affairs Wives Association and Flipkart. At the moment we will be able to provide the supplement to 600 children annually. As a pilot project ICS is partnering AIIMS for a 3 month study on the impact of the nutritional supplements improving the health of a child suffering from cancer.

Cancerthon

This was a NDTV initiative, held on the 8th Feb 2015, sponsored by Fortis with ICS as the knowledge and implementation partner. The aim was to raise money for children affected by cancer.

A total amount of Rs 76,32,707.08 was collected. We have helped 35 children with cancer so far, across the country. The participating hospitals were,

Delhi - AAIMS, IRCH, RGCI, Fortis.Chennai - Ray of Light.Kolkata - Tata Memorial Centre, Saroj Gupta Cancer Institute.Bangalore - Shankara Hospital.

Knit

Knit a Square programme was successfully introduced this year. If you are a knitter, knit 12"x 12" squares with any wool, which can be made up into a child's blanket. A child's blanket takes 3x4 squares of 12" each. DO KNIT.

Eating RightBecause of our fast lifestyle, stress and our changing food habits in recent times, Cancer, Diabetes and Heart disease have increased. These can be fatal if not managed carefully.Eating right is the key to remaining healthy. A lot has been written about the importance of diet in our lives. We vaguely know what is right and what is not, but how much is good and how much is too much is what we need to also know.

The familiar food pyramid is no longer applicable as the US Dept of Agriculture & Health & Human Services have come up with new dietary guidelines capping the amount of sugar, salt and fat that we ought to take each day.

Colour Code. Fruits & Vegetables: Both fruits & vegetables are high in dietary fibre and naturally low in fat, sodium and calories. But it is wise to have a wide variety of these as the benefits of each being different it ensures a combined balanced nutritional benefit.A woman needs 2 1/2 cups of vegetables a day, whereas a man requires 3 cups. In addition to this 1 1/2 cups of fruits should also be eaten. If drinking juice, no additional sugar should be added.

In the green vegetables, dark green ones like lettuce, spinach, broccoli and sprouts are better than iceberg lettuce and green beans. For eating orange and yellows- carrots, pumpkins, sweet potatoes lemons, oranges and grapefruit are better than eating corn. Choose tomatoes, red peppers and strawberries over apples for the reds, and get your whites from cauliflower instead of potatoes and mushrooms.

Grains are Good: Eating whole grains is healthier as they contain dietary fibre, iron and many B vitamins. Eat whole wheat flour, unpolished rice, Bulgar, whole cornmeal, oatmeal, barley etc and have a minimal of polished rice, maida, white bread and pasta. How much of this you eat, depends on your level of activity. As a thumb rule, adults should not have more than about 90 gms a day.

Fat Free or Low Fat Dairy: Dairy products are the main source of Calcium, Potassium and Protein which helps to improve bone health , build muscle mass and prevent bone fractures. Fat free or low fat dairy including milk, yogurt, cheese and /or fortified soy beverages are recommended. Children till the age of three years, need 2 cups of dairy a day, where as adults, both men and women must have 3 cups of milk or yogurt or any other dairy products like cheese & paneer daily.

Pick Your Proteins. Foods rich in protein are lean meats and poultry, eggs, legumes (beans & peas) soy products, nuts & seeds. An adult need approximately 120-150 gms per day. It is wiser to choose lean or low fat meat, poultry and seafood which is rich in Omega 3 fatty acids. Processed meats such as ham, sausages, cold cuts etc should be eaten sparingly as they have sodium added to them.

Avoid Fat, Salt & Sugar : Most oils derived from plant sources (vegetable & nut oils) have no cholesterol, and are low in saturated fats and high in mono saturated or poly saturated fats, but some like coconut, palm and palm kernel are high in saturated fats.Solid fats high

in saturated fats and cholesterol are butter, whole milk, meats that are not labelled as lean and tropical oils such as coconut and palm oil.

Natural Sugars are found in fruits and milk. Added artificial sugars should be less than 10% of the daily calories. Higher sugar intake not only increases the risks of Diabetes and Obesity, but can also cause breast and lung cancer according to a new study from the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Centre.

The in take of Sodium should also be carefully monitored. Adults and children 14 years and older should have less than 2,300 mg of sodium (1 tsp of salt) a day, while younger children should have less. There is sodium in processed foods, pizzas, pastas, sauces, pickles, chutneys and bread which should also be taken into account when calculating the daily intake.

This is an ideal scenario, There is nothing wrong in occasionally eating your favourite dishes and indulging yourself, so long as in the long run you EAT RIGHT!!

Train the Trainers

Cancer is on the rise and the tragedy is that so many lives are lost because of ignorance about the disease. To reach out to a larger number of people, ICS in partnership with Samajik Suvidha Kendra (Mission Convergence), sponsored by ONGC held a series of 5 workshops. These workshops aimed to Train the Trainer. Almost half of the population in Delhi live in vast urban slums with little access to services which most of us take for granted. This is where the Gender Resource Centres are doing sterling work, working actively in the field, in touch with the locals. The outreach of each of these workers is in thousands, so in training each one of them, we are disseminating this knowledge and information to lakhs. In the 5 workshops held between 14th December 2015 to 22nd Jan 2016, 207 community workers were trained. A drop in the ocean, but it's a start.

Eating Right During Treatment(Excerpts from HT New Delhi 04 01 2016)

One in four people with cancer are forced to stop treatment because they are undernourished and their bodies cannot cope with the toxic side effects of radiation and chemotherapy. "They are fine when the treatment begins, but by the 3rd week it begins to take its toll on their bodies and nearly 25% are forced to stop treatment. The complication rate jumps by 35% - 40% for major surgeries in people with cancer whose nutritional levels are low", says Dr Harit Chaturvedi, Director Surgical Oncology, Max Hospital, Saket.

Nutrition plays an important role in cancer treatment, which makes it crucial to have a diet plan while undergoing and after cancer treatment.Cancer and its treatments, lowers the appetite, tolerance to different foods and the ability to digest nutrients. Apart from calculating the BMI (body mass index) skin fold thickness to measure fat under the skin and albumin count are taken to determine whether a patient can bear the treatment.

Overall, people with cancer have multiple deficiencies but what is most important from the treatment point of view is that the energy levels must be met so that the patients do not lose weight, " says Dr Gauri Kapoor, Director Haematologist and Oncologist, Dept of Pediatrics, Rajiv Gandhi Cancer Institute. " Losing weight means their nutritional levels are dropping making them prone to infections that compromise the chances of the success of the treatment", she adds.

Broadly speaking, people undergoing cancer treatment - radiation, chemotherapy, suffer from vitamin D, folic acid, vitamin B12, iron and zinc deficiency as drugs used in the treatment deplete vital nutrients from the body or hamper their absorption.

Not only is it important to eat a proper diet, it is equally important to see that the food is not contaminated in any way.

Eating Right...FruitsFresh fruits play a major role to detoxify your system, supplying you with a great deal of energy for normal life activities. We all think eating fruits means just buying fruits, cutting them and putting them into our mouths. It's not as easy as that. It is important to know how and when to eat.

FRUITS SHOULD BE EATEN ON AN EMPTY STOMACH. Suppose you eat two slices of bread and then a slice of fruit. The slice of fruit is ready to go straight through the stomach into the intestines, but it is prevented from doing so by the bread. The minute the fruit comes into contact with the food in the stomach and digestive juices, the entire mass of food begins to spoil. In the meantime the whole meal rots and ferments and turns to acid.

Eating a whole fruit is better than drinking the juice but if you have to drink juice, drink fresh juice and not canned.

Medical Manager(Excerpts courtesy V Care)

Can you name all the doctors whom you've seen in the last five years, or the conditions you've been treated for? It's difficult to remember. But there is an easy solution. Write it down.

People think that a medical record is something that only a doctors office handles, but having a medical record available is always useful. Doctors have limited time and are overburdened, a written health history can improve the health care that you receive and also knowing which tests and treatments you have already had, might help your doctor from unnecessarily repeating them.

Having your own records is also helpful when you travel or change your doctor. An organised file could be critical if a friend or family member needs to assist in your medical care or make decisions on your behalf.

It does not have to be complicated. A simple list would do:lName, Date of Birth.

Blood Type.Information about your allergies, including food and drugs.Details about chronic conditions you have.A list of all the medications you use, the dosage and how long you’ve been taking them.
